Gods and Idols
Gods and Idols is a free-to-play MMORTS that puts you in the role of a fledgling deity competing for control of a living, persistent universe. Instead of focusing purely on base-building, the game leans into cosmic-scale powers, letting you reshape worlds, trigger catastrophic stellar events, and weaponize space itself as you expand your influence through followers and fleets.

Gods and Idols Overview
Gods and Idols is a free-to-play, persistent MMORTS framed around immortal beings battling across a shared galaxy-scale sandbox. You take on the role of an ascended human tied to Oberon (the father of the gods) and step into a narrative described as a tragedy, written by fantasy author Shon Pan. The hook is that your “RTS toolkit” is not just units and resources, it is direct control over celestial and planetary conditions.
Moment to moment, the game aims to blend long-term empire growth with dramatic, high-impact abilities. You can sculpt planets into habitable homes for your followers, tune ecosystems and weather to support their prosperity, and push your influence outward as your worshipers construct temples and produce the ships that serve as your military arm. On the destructive side, your powers are equally oversized, ranging from cleaning radiation from stars to triggering artificial supernovas through alien artifacts, with other cosmic-scale options meant to change the map in ways a typical strategy game cannot.
The multiplayer layer revolves around a large, open universe shared with many other players. You are encouraged to coordinate with others by forming pantheons (alliances of deities), contest territory and resources, and participate in large-scale wars where strategy is shaped both by fleet movement and by world-altering god powers. The intent is that the overarching storyline and the state of the universe reflect player actions over time, rather than being a static backdrop.

Developer: Viking Tao
Publisher: Viking Tao
Release Date: December 12, 2016
Gods and Idols is developed and published by Viking Tao. The project has been in the works since 2007, created by a small team of developers and contributors, which is important context for understanding both its ambition and its pace. Viking Tao has historically emphasized active communication with the community and a willingness to adjust the game based on player feedback.
Monetization has been presented as free-to-play with an effort to avoid pay-to-win design, including the promise that premium currency can be earned through normal play. The game moved to Steam Early Access on December 12, 2016 as an open alpha, with the stated intention of remaining in Early Access while core balance is refined. At this time, there is no confirmed date for a full release beyond Early Access.
