Boundless

Boundless is a sandbox MMO built around exploration, gathering, and large-scale voxel construction across a network of connected worlds. Each planet features its own procedurally generated terrain and biomes, and players shape their own path through crafting, trading, hunting creatures, and building anything from small homesteads to ambitious community projects in a bright, blocky universe.

Overview

Boundless Overview

Boundless aims to deliver a shared, persistent sandbox where the main content is what players choose to pursue. Instead of a single map, the game is framed around many worlds hosted on large public servers, mixing procedurally generated planets with locations shaped heavily by player activity. Moving between worlds is part of the core loop, letting you chase specific resources, different terrain types, or simply a new place to settle and build.

Character creation offers a range of race options, but what matters more is how you define your role over time. You can focus on harvesting and refining materials into building blocks, then turn those blocks into functional bases, decorative builds, or sprawling settlements. If construction is not your priority, exploration provides its own pull, with distinct biomes that can include deep cave networks and floating islands, plus weather that helps each world feel a little different.

Combat exists mainly to support progression and gathering. Equipping weapons and hunting creatures yields rewards and materials, and it gives builders and crafters another reason to venture beyond their safe zones. On top of that, Boundless leans into an economy-driven multiplayer structure, encouraging trade and specialization. Many players naturally gravitate into niches, whether that is supplying refined materials, running shops, organizing guild builds, or setting up themed attractions like creature collections.

While you can play independently and carve out a quiet corner, the game is clearly designed to shine when groups coordinate. Guilds can tackle larger builds and shared infrastructure, and players who enjoy social sandbox communities will likely get the most out of its long-term pacing. For those who prefer a more controlled environment, there is also the option to host a separate private server for friend-only play.

Development History / Background:

Boundless is a sandbox title developed and published by Wonderstruck, a studio located in Guildford in the United Kingdom. During its early life it was referred to as Oort Online, before being rebranded as Boundless in October 2015. The project runs on a voxel engine created by Turbulenz, a UK developer that operates as a peer studio to Wonderstruck. Boundless appeared on Steam Greenlight in August 2014 and received approval in under a week. Following that, a pre-alpha version arrived through Steam as an early access release priced at $35, with the team initially targeting a 1.0 launch in 2016. Work on the 1.0 foundation later shifted to 2017, and the plan included a PS4 release alongside PC and Mac versions.
