Divided We Fall

Divided We Fall is a World War II themed RTS that narrows the usual base-building chaos down to tight, squad-level decision making. Instead of managing an army, you command a four-soldier team where positioning, timing, and smart use of cover matter as much as raw aim and damage. The result is a fast, PvP-focused tactics game that asks you to think quickly while still playing like an RTS.

Overview

Divided We Fall Overview

In Divided We Fall you take command of a small squad of WWII soldiers and fight for control in tactical, real-time engagements. Each match revolves around making the most of four individual units, equipping them with different weapon types (including options like machine guns and sniper rifles), and coordinating fire and movement so your team wins the exchange.

Combat leans heavily on classic squad tactics. Picking angles, setting up ambushes, and layering suppressive fire can be more important than simply charging forward. Maps encourage you to work with the environment, using objects like walls, sandbags, and vehicles as protection or as tools to break line of sight while you reposition.

For competitive players, the game supports quick, intense 1v1 battles where every mistake is punished. If you prefer something more chaotic and social, there are also 15v15 matches where every participant still controls a four-man squad, turning the battlefield into a dense mix of coordinated pushes and messy skirmishes. Outside of matchmaking, the Map Editor and multiple modes give players room to experiment and build their own scenarios, and clans provide a simple structure for group play and rivalries.

Divided We Fall Key Features:

  • Real-Time Strategy – control four units at once in rapid 1v1 battles that reward quick decisions.
  • Squad-Based Tactics – coordinate ambushes, covering fire, and flanks by managing individual soldiers.
  • Use Terrain – turn map objects (walls, cars, sandbags) into advantages through smart positioning.
  • Large-Scale PvP – join 15v15 matches, with each player commanding their own four-man squad.
  • Clan System build or join a clan to organize teams and compete against other groups.

Divided We Fall Review

Divided We Fall is at its best when it feels like a rapid-fire chess match played with rifles and cover. The four-unit limit is the game’s defining idea, it keeps the action readable and forces you to care about each soldier’s role rather than treating them as disposable. In practice, that design creates fights where small positional wins can snowball into a full squad wipe, especially in 1v1.

On the battlefield, the moment-to-moment flow is about juggling micro decisions. You are constantly evaluating whether to hold an angle, rotate around cover, or split your squad to threaten multiple lanes. Because you are managing individuals, you can set up situations where one soldier pins an opponent while another moves for a better line of sight. That said, splitting too aggressively can backfire quickly, and the game’s pace means you often have only a second or two to react before a bad engagement becomes unrecoverable.

Weapons and loadouts add variety without turning the game into a pure spreadsheet. Different options push you toward different approaches, for example, longer-range picks encourage careful sightlines, while more aggressive setups reward quick peeks and fast repositioning. The best matches tend to be the ones where both players actively adapt, changing their movement patterns and angles rather than repeating the same opening.

The larger 15v15 mode is a different kind of appeal. With so many squads in play, the frontline is less predictable and coordination matters more. It can feel less “pure” than duels because the overall match can swing due to what happens around you, but it is also where clans and teamwork make the most sense. When groups coordinate pushes, cover each other’s rotations, and trade information, the mode becomes a lively combined-arms style skirmish even though everyone is still operating small squads.

The biggest hurdle is accessibility. The game expects you to learn by doing, and the limited tutorial support makes the early hours harsher than they need to be. New players can lose quickly to experienced opponents who know the strongest openings and the most efficient ways to exploit positioning. Some strategies can also feel a bit too “gimmicky”, where the correct response is not obvious until you have already been punished by it a few times.

If you enjoy RTS combat but prefer tight, tactical control over base management, Divided We Fall offers a distinct niche. It is a competitive, cover-driven squad RTS with a low playerbase, so it is best approached with the expectation that you may run into veterans and that finding matches can depend on region and time of day. For players who stick with it, the four-unit focus creates a satisfying loop of learning angles, reading opponents, and refining your micro.

Development History / Background:

Divided We Fall is an RTS developed and published by KAVA Game Studio. Its roots trace back to work on an enhanced follow-up to Call of Combat, a title originally released in 2002. Early on, the project even carried the Call of Combat name because the intent was to modernize and expand the earlier game. As development progressed and the scope shifted significantly, the team opted to rebrand it as a distinct successor with its own identity. Open alpha testing began in February 2015 and ran alongside a Kickstarter campaign from February to March 2015. After the campaign did not reach its funding target, KAVA Game Studio continued development independently. The game later appeared on Steam Greenlight in June 2016 (the post was later removed by the author), then entered Early Access on September 7, 2016. A full release followed in 2017.
