Star Citizen alpha 4.8 goes live with Tactical Strike missions and a DefenseCon free fly

Star Citizen’s alpha 4.8 update, called Tactical Strike, is now live. The headline addition is a new group-focused PvE activity built around tactical strike missions, with players taking on organized combat encounters as a team.

The patch also kicks off the latest DefenseCon free fly event, which means people can jump in and try the game during the event window without buying a package first. Alongside that, the update includes a batch of other additions and balance changes, though the main focus is clearly on the new co-op mission content.

Tactical Strike is aimed at groups rather than solo players, pushing squads through combat-heavy objectives instead of the more open-ended sandbox play Star Citizen is usually known for. That makes this one of the more directed PvE additions the alpha has seen recently.

Outside of the new missions, alpha 4.8 also brings the usual round of adjustments and smaller changes that come with a major test build. The source material doesn’t go deep into every tweak, but the broad takeaway is straightforward: a new cooperative PvE feature is in, and the free fly has started.

As always with Star Citizen, this is still an alpha release, so players should expect rough edges. But if you’ve been waiting for more structured group PvE, or just wanted an excuse to check in during a free fly, this week’s update is the big one.
