Sony to Stop Producing PlayStation Discs for New Games in 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment says it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. From that point on, new releases on PlayStation consoles will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers.

The change won’t affect games that are already available on disc, or titles that launch physically before the cutoff. In its official post, Sony said the move is tied to “shifting trends in consumer preference” as more players buy games digitally.

That trend has been building for years. As Game File reported, Sony’s own financial materials said nearly four in five full-game purchases on PS4 and PS5 were digital over the past financial year.

A Sony spokesperson also told Game File that, like other digital media, players are buying a personal license for non-commercial use rather than owning a physical copy. The company said it remains committed to bringing games from past generations to the platforms players are using now, though the long-term preservation question around digital-only libraries is still the obvious sticking point.

The move follows a wider industry shift away from boxed games. Both PlayStation and Xbox already sell digital-only console models, and physical retail has been shrinking outside of a few exceptions. For players who still collect discs, buy used, lend games, or want offline access without depending on storefront availability, January 2028 is now the date to watch.
