RuneScape is removing auras in an upcoming update

RuneScape is getting rid of auras. Jagex says the system is being removed in the game’s next update as part of its Road to Restoration work, following player feedback that auras feel more like chores than meaningful choices.

According to the official post, the big issue is pressure: remembering to toggle an aura, waiting on cooldowns, and feeling like you’re “supposed” to have certain auras for bosses or other content. Even when the buffs aren’t that exciting, they can still come off as a requirement, which is exactly what Jagex says it wants to move away from.

This isn’t a full wipe of everything auras ever did. Jagex says it plans to move some of the more meaningful aura effects onto other items or rewards instead, with some rebalancing along the way. The studio also claims it’s trying to avoid power creep and not just replacing auras with a new layer of micromanagement under a different name.

The post also gets into the weeds on what happens to specific buffs, plus related stuff like aura slots and zone-specific auras. There’s no firm launch date yet, but Jagex describes the changes as “imminent.”
