Jagex says it won’t ship player-facing generative AI content in RuneScape games

Jagex says players won’t run into generative AI-made assets in its games, including anything they can see, hear, or otherwise directly experience. The UK studio behind RuneScape and Old School RuneScape drew a clear line on the topic in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

According to the GamesIndustry.biz report, Jagex SVP of product James Dobrowski said the company doesn’t want to use AI to “drive creativity,” and has committed to keeping generative AI out of any in-game assets that reach players.

That doesn’t mean Jagex is refusing AI entirely. Dobrowski said the studio is open to using it behind the scenes for things like improving internal tools and workflow efficiency, with the goal of making development smoother for staff. The key distinction, as Jagex frames it, is that those uses wouldn’t result in AI-generated content showing up in the final game.

Jagex also says it’s applying that standard beyond its own teams. Dobrowski explained the company is reviewing work with external partners to make sure generative AI isn’t being used in ways that could “filter through” into shipped game content.

The comments land amid ongoing industry arguments over where generative AI fits in game development, especially when it comes to art, audio, and other player-facing assets. Jagex’s stance is one of the more explicit promises from a major MMO developer: no generative AI content in the parts of the game players actually interact with.
