Dungeon Runners Reborn Opens Public Alpha 17 Years After Shutdown

Dungeon Runners is playable again, at least in early form. The fan-run emulator project Dungeon Runners Reborn has opened for public alpha testing, 17 years after NCsoft shut the original game down.

The team says the current build is compatible with the original client and has the core game running, though players should expect bugs, missing features, and general rough edges. The group also says it’s consolidating work from different community builds into one main version.

Dungeon Runners was a short-lived action MMO from NCsoft that ran from 2007 until the end of 2009. It played like a loot-heavy dungeon crawler and leaned hard into parody, poking fun at RPG and MMO tropes rather than taking its fantasy setting too seriously.

The original shutdown was unusually on-brand: the developers ended the game by dropping an atomic bomb in the middle of the town square.

One notable detail here is that the Dungeon Runners Reborn team says it’s currently in talks with NCsoft about an official license. There’s no confirmed agreement yet, so for now this remains an unofficial rogue server in alpha testing.
