The Division Overview
Tom Clancy’s The Division blends third-person shooting with MMO-style progression, light RPG builds, and survival-flavored resource management. In practice it sits in a similar lane to games like Destiny, with a social hub, instanced missions, a shared city space, and a constant focus on upgrading your loadout through drops and crafting. Where The Division most clearly separates itself is in its grounded, near-future disaster setup and its signature PvP loop.
The standout competitive feature is the Dark Zone, a quarantined area of Manhattan designed around risk versus reward. High-end gear is more common there, but it comes with a catch: anything valuable you pick up has to be extracted by calling in a helicopter, then holding your ground until the pickup arrives. That simple step creates natural flashpoints where temporary alliances form, betrayals happen, and squads have to decide whether to cooperate, avoid contact, or go rogue and take what they can from other players. It is a system that makes loot feel earned, not just awarded.
Outside of PvP, the game leans heavily on its atmosphere, snowy streets, abandoned storefronts, and environmental storytelling that sells the panic of a city collapsing under a pandemic. Missions and encounters push you to use cover, manage cooldown-based skills, and keep your gear score moving upward, with co-op play generally feeling like the intended way to experience the tougher content.
The Division Key Features:
- Open World – explore a persistent, shared New York built around co-op roaming, dynamic encounters, and structured mission runs.
- Character Customization – shape your agent through gear, skills, and tech-focused tools, swapping loot to support different combat roles and playstyles.
- Dark Zone PvP – enter a high-stakes area where players and AI threats collide, then secure your best finds by extracting them via helicopter.
- High Production Value – Snowdrop powers detailed city visuals and a smooth-feeling traversal and combat flow across dense urban spaces.
- Loot-Driven Gameplay – progression centers on chasing stronger drops and improving your build rather than traditional Tom Clancy-style one-and-done missions.

Development History / Background:
The Division was created across multiple Ubisoft teams, with Ubisoft Massive supported by Ubisoft Reflections, Red Storm Entertainment, and Ubisoft Annecy, each contributing to different parts of the overall experience. Ubisoft publishes the game, and first revealed it publicly at E3 2013. Early on, it was positioned as a console-focused release, although other platforms were not completely dismissed.
A mobile companion concept was also discussed during development, built around assisting players through drone-style support features. Ubisoft encouraged PC players to register interest through a petition, and after enough community support the company confirmed a PC version on August 20, 2013. The release window shifted more than once, first aiming for 2014, then moving to 2015 on May 15, 2014 as the technology behind the engine needed more time. Another delay followed in 2015, pushing the launch to mid-2016, and the planned mobile companion project was ultimately cancelled due to concerns that it could create unfair advantages in PvP.
