Tempest

Tempest is a naval-themed RPG that puts you in command of a pirate vessel, focusing on ship-to-ship battles, trading between ports, and upgrading your rig to survive increasingly dangerous waters. It leans heavily into tactical sailing and cannon exchanges, with enough questing and faction flavor to frame your voyages, plus the occasional boss-like encounter against sea monsters that can end a run quickly if you get careless.

Publisher: HeroCraft
Playerbase: Low
Type: Naval RPG

Overview

Tempest Overview

Tempest casts you as a rising pirate captain starting with a modest ship and a big ocean to learn. The game’s moment-to-moment play revolves around reading the wind, managing distance, and choosing how to dismantle opposing ships, all while day and night shifts and changing weather make the sea feel less like a flat arena and more like a living space.

Progress is largely tied to the loot and income you bring back to port. Each harbor acts as a small hub with its own selection of goods and price differences, encouraging you to sell spoils where it is profitable and reinvest in upgrades. Outfitting your vessel is the heart of the build system, you can lean into maneuverability with sails and handling improvements, stack damage through cannon choices, or balance the two for consistent results.

Combat offers more nuance than simply firing until something sinks. You can aim to punch through hull integrity for a quick sink, or deliberately target sails and masts to cripple a ship and set up a boarding action. That choice matters because boarding can be a more lucrative way to secure rewards, but it also introduces risk if you misjudge the enemy’s remaining threat.

Not every danger carries a flag. Tempest also throws sea creatures into the mix as high-threat encounters that function like roaming bosses, forcing you to adapt your tactics and positioning. Alongside this, factions provide a light layer of allegiance and purpose, giving you reasons to engage certain enemies and support friendly forces as you work through quests that gradually reveal the game’s broader narrative context.
