Star Sonata 2 is developed and published by Landauer Games, the same studio behind the original Star Sonata (released in October 2004). Support for the first game continued for years, with regular additions and updates between 2004 and 2011. In 2011, the team pivoted its main efforts to Star Sonata 2 and began accepting beta signups in August 2011. The official release followed on November 12, 2011, bringing a more modernized presentation than the first game, including 3D visuals and a significantly improved interface compared to its predecessor. Development has remained ongoing, and the game later made its way to Steam in Fall 2016.
