Overview

Planet of Heroes Overview

At the center of Planet of Heroes is the Devourer, a looming threat that must be kept dormant. The game frames its battles around feeding that entity with energy earned through arena conflict, giving the otherwise familiar MOBA loop a light narrative wrapper. In practice, the focus is on fast, mobile-friendly matches that aim to deliver a complete competitive round in roughly seven minutes.

Players could jump into 1v1 or 3v3 fights. The 3v3 mode played like a traditional team brawler built for phones, emphasizing quick rotations, short downtime, and clear role definition. The 1v1 format had a twist, you selected a trio of heroes for your side, but only directly controlled one at any given moment while the remaining two operated under AI behavior. This structure pushed players to think more about team composition and matchups than pure mechanical outplay alone.

Hero selection supported the classic triangle of Damage, Tank, and Healer, with more than seven heroes offering different ways to approach those jobs. Some kits leaned into burst and mobility, others into soaking pressure and starting fights, while support-oriented options helped stabilize skirmishes and keep teammates active in the lane.

Planet of Heroes also separated matchmaking into Sync and Async battles. Sync required a live connection and functioned as the standard real-time experience. Async was designed as a fallback for unstable connectivity, letting you play even when a consistent internet connection was not available by replacing the opposing side with AI control. Alongside those modes, the developers positioned the project as community-influenced, encouraging vocal feedback and participation in balancing discussions.

Planet of Heroes Key Features:

  • Player-Informed Balancing – the studio openly encouraged feedback and aimed to involve the community in shaping balance and direction.
  • Short Match Structure – most battles were built around a quick 7-minute cadence to fit mobile play sessions.
  • Solo Queue or Full Party – play 1v1 with a three-hero lineup (one controlled at a time) or team up for 3v3.
  • Defined Team Roles – pick heroes suited to Tanking, Dealing Damage, or Supporting as a Healer, depending on your playstyle.
  • Sync and Async Sync delivered real-time PvP, while Async offered an option for players dealing with unreliable connections.

Planet of Heroes Review

Planet of Heroes set out to solve a common mobile MOBA problem: how do you deliver the tension of a team brawler without asking for 30 to 45 minutes and a rock-solid connection? Its answer was a condensed ruleset, a seven-minute target match length, and multiple play modes that could accommodate different connectivity situations. When it worked, it felt like a focused, snack-sized alternative to larger MOBAs, with enough tactical decision-making to reward smart picks and coordinated engages.

Moment-to-moment gameplay leaned into clarity. Roles were easy to understand, the match length encouraged early action, and the smaller scale helped reduce the feeling of getting “stuck” in a bad game for too long. The 3v3 format in particular suited mobile controls, since team fights were easier to read than the chaos of bigger team sizes, and each player’s contribution was more obvious. If you queued with friends, the game’s pacing supported quick coordinated plays and clean win conditions.

The 1v1 mode’s three-hero lineup was one of the more distinctive ideas. Even though you only controlled one hero at a time, drafting a small squad created a layer of strategy that felt closer to building a mini team comp than simply picking a single character and hoping for favorable matchups. The AI-controlled heroes could not replace human decision-making, but the mode did encourage planning and adaptation in a way that was unusual for mobile PvP at the time.

Where the experience could lose momentum was in progression. Unlocking heroes and runes could take a while, and that kind of long-tail grind can be a poor fit for a game that otherwise sells itself on quick sessions and immediate competition. Players who enjoy slowly building a collection might have found it acceptable, but those looking for rapid access to experimentation and counterpicks could hit friction.

The Sync and Async split was practical, especially for players without consistent service, but it also meant the competitive “feel” depended heavily on which mode you were using. Real-time battles are where a MOBA’s timing, mind games, and clutch moments shine, while AI-driven opposition tends to flatten those highs. Still, the inclusion of Async showed a clear understanding of mobile realities.

It is also worth noting that Planet of Heroes has been shut down (November 28, 2019). As a result, the game is best remembered as an interesting attempt to streamline the MOBA formula for mobile, with a strong emphasis on match length and accessibility, even if its long-term progression pace could be a sticking point.
