Maguss
Maguss was a free-to-play augmented-reality MMO for iOS and Android that asked players to step outside and play wizard in the real world. By walking around, you could gather ingredients, locate dungeons, learn spells, brew potions, and challenge other players to duels, with the option to use a Bluetooth wand for a more “spellcasting” feel.

Maguss Overview
Maguss was a mobile augmented-reality MMORPG that overlaid a magical layer onto everyday streets and neighborhoods, turning your phone into a window into a world of creatures, resources, and hidden encounters. Its core loop revolved around moving through real locations to discover points of interest, collect materials, and trigger activities like quests or Underworld dungeon runs. The theme leaned heavily into modern fantasy, the “learn spells and become a wizard” sort of vibe, and it was clearly designed for players who liked the idea of taking a game outdoors rather than staying glued to a single screen.
Progression in Maguss blended exploration with light RPG systems. As you walked, you gathered ingredients used in crafting, especially for potion-making and other consumables. Those items supported survival and combat, giving you ways to recover, mitigate ailments, or temporarily improve performance. The game also encouraged social play, letting players trade crafted goods and materials, which helped make the world feel like a shared economy instead of a purely solo scavenger hunt.
Spellcasting was the centerpiece. Players could study to unlock spells, then activate them either through touch input on the phone or via the optional Bluetooth wand accessory. The wand was a defining gimmick, aiming to make dueling and casting feel more physical than typical mobile AR titles, while still leaving a manual option for anyone who wanted to play without additional hardware.
Combat and creature interaction rounded out the package. You could run into monsters around the globe, fight them for rewards, and even capture and tame some creatures to accompany you and contribute in battle. For group-minded players, the Underworld content and quests offered reasons to team up, while competitive players had PvP dueling with both proximity-based fights and online long-distance matches. Finally, Maguss included four Orders (factions) with their own themes, providing a sense of allegiance and rivalry through leaderboards and community identity.
Maguss Key Features:
- Augmented Reality Magic – a spell-learning system focused on using offensive magic alongside utility effects like charms and curses.
- Four Competing Factions – join one of four Orders, including groups like Circle of the Guild or Fellowship of Wizardry, each encouraging community play and competition.
- Variety of Crafted Items – brew and craft many potions and helpful items using ingredients gathered while exploring.
- Questing and Dungeons – take on quests for experience and rewards, and enter Underworld dungeons found through the map interface.
- Duel Other Wizards – challenge other players via matchmaking, with options for nearby duels or online long-distance PvP.

Development History / Background:
Maguss was created and released by the Maguss Development Team, an independent group that began work on the project in July 2014. The team first attempted to fund development through Kickstarter, launching the campaign on August 4, 2015 with a target of 450,000 kr (about $51,000 USD). The campaign did not reach its goal and ended on September 13, 2015 with 206,710 kr pledged.
One of the more unusual parts of Maguss’s early pitch was its reliance on a dedicated Maguss Wand, a Bluetooth device intended to make spellcasting feel more authentic and interactive. Following the Kickstarter’s underperformance, the developers continued iterating on the concept and ultimately shifted toward a more accessible approach, allowing players to cast spells without purchasing the wand.
The project later returned to crowdfunding via Indiegogo, starting October 10, 2016 with a fixed funding goal of $50,000 USD and ending on November 10, 2016. After continued development, Maguss launched on Android on March 15, 2019, with an iOS release following afterward. Service for the game concluded with a shutdown on April 06, 2020.
