Legends of Runeterra
Legends of Runeterra is a 2D online collectible card game set in the League of Legends universe, built around head-to-head matches where you pilot a custom deck packed with familiar champions, followers, spells, and region-specific tricks. It takes recognizable Runeterra flavor and translates it into a tactical CCG that emphasizes interaction on both players’ turns rather than long stretches of solitaire play.

Legends of Runeterra Overview
Legends of Runeterra takes Riot’s MOBA universe and reframes it as a competitive CCG where positioning, timing, and reading your opponent matter as much as deck construction. The ruleset is approachable if you have experience with other digital card games, but it has its own cadence thanks to frequent back-and-forth decision points. Instead of committing to complex combat math on faith, the game also provides a clear preview tool (Oracle’s Eye) that lets you verify how a sequence will resolve before you lock it in, which makes learning interactions far less punishing.
Deckbuilding starts with regions, and the five available in this release lineup, Demacia, Noxus, Piltover and Zaun, Ionia, and the Shadow Isles, each leans into a different identity. Some specialize in board presence and straightforward pressure, others reward careful spell usage, tricks, or sacrifice-style value. Mixing regions is where the strategy opens up, because you can pair complementary strengths or double down on a particular gameplan depending on what you enjoy playing.
Progression is designed to be played rather than purchased. Instead of relying on traditional booster pack buying loops, you earn reward boxes through regular play and quests, and those boxes include a mix of random cards plus Wildcards that can be converted into specific cards of the same rarity. A major draw is the Champion card roster (24 Champions in this version), which are powerful build-around pieces that can level up mid-match when you meet their conditions, creating big swing moments and clear goals to play toward. For competitive players, there is ranked matchmaking, while the draft-focused Expeditions mode offers a higher-pressure alternative that tests card evaluation and on-the-fly deck construction.

Development History / Background:
Legends of Runeterra is a free-to-play 2D online collectible card game (CCG) created by Riot Games and released under the same publisher banner. It draws directly from League of Legends, using the same world, factions, and recognizable characters, but shifts the focus from mechanical execution to planning, sequencing, and matchup knowledge.
Public awareness began with its reveal on October 15, 2019, timed alongside League of Legends’ tenth anniversary celebration. On that date, a limited preview was also made available, running through October 20, 2019. Riot followed up with a second preview window from November 14 to 19, 2019, which put added attention on Expeditions, the game’s draft-style mode.
The game then moved into open beta on January 24, 2020, marking the point where a broader audience could jump in, start building collections through play, and test decks in both casual and ranked environments.
