Overview

Horizon Source Overview

Horizon Source is a China-developed shooter that launched on Steam and aimed to deliver a lightweight, pick-up-and-play spin on the Battle Royale formula. Instead of fully custom loadouts, you select from a small roster of heroes, each tied to specific weapons and a set of unique skills. From there, the game drops you into 100-player matches that tend to move quickly, partly because many slots are filled by AI opponents that keep the action flowing even when the human population is thin.

Team play is supported with squads of up to four, and the game includes ranking and a leaderboard system to give matches a bit more structure beyond simply chasing wins. If you are familiar with modern Battle Royale conventions, the interface and general flow will feel recognizable, including a simplified building system that lets players put up basic structures during fights.

Horizon Source Key Features:

  • Hero Shooter – Horizon Source blends a hero-style character roster with Battle Royale rules, giving each of its 6 characters distinct abilities and signature weapons.
  • Small & Quick – The install size is minimal and the hardware requirements are low, making it easy to run on older PCs.
  • Ranks & Leaderboards – Placement matches and a public leaderboard provide a straightforward competitive track for regular players.
  • Familiar Gameplay / Interface –Many systems will look familiar to genre regulars, including the ability to place ramps and walls for quick cover.

Development History / Background:

Horizon Source arrived as a Chinese Battle Royale project that later received an English Steam release on March 20, 2018. Design-wise, it mixes Fortnite-style on-the-fly construction with a more grounded presentation reminiscent of PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds. In practice, the overall feel can come across closer to a mobile shooter than a full-scale PC production, with relatively simple movement and gunplay and a match pace that rarely slows down.

A notable part of that pace comes from the large number of low-difficulty bots in most games, which helps keep firefights frequent but also reduces the tension that defines the best Battle Royale experiences. Even so, it built a small audience on Steam and sat among other low-cost or budget-friendly entries in the genre, such as Last Man Standing. Service for North America and Europe, covering Horizon Source and The Ark of Horizon, ultimately ended on May 12, 2019.
