Heroes of Dire Overview
Heroes of Dire is a free-to-play dark fantasy MMORPG from the creators of The Infinite Black, released with full cross-platform play on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux. Rather than controlling a single hero in real time, you build and command a small squad, then take that team into tactical, grid-based battles against monsters and other players, often in the context of guild conflict and territory pressure.
Team building is the heart of the game. You recruit fighters that fit familiar archetypes like Mage, Paladin, and Healer, then assemble lineups that can handle different threats. A major hook is that each fighter is procedurally generated, not just in stats but also in identity elements like names, titles, gear, and small bits of flavor. The result is a roster that can feel personal even when it is pulled from a huge pool, with oddball combinations and memorable generated personas showing up regularly.
Combat plays out in turns on a tiled battlefield. Instead of a simple alternating turn order, actions have a time-cost, which influences when a unit acts next. That system pushes you to think about tempo, positioning, and whether a high-impact move is worth delaying your next opportunity. Encounters can be relatively small with only a couple of fighters, or scale up into large brawls with up to 32 combatants in the same fight, which is where the guild warfare angle becomes more apparent.
Social play is also built into the squad concept. You can borrow shared fighters from friends or guildmates to fill gaps in your lineup. When the owner is not present, those borrowed units are driven by the AI, but if the owner is online and opts in, they can jump into the battle alongside you for a more cooperative feel.
One of the more unusual ideas in Heroes of Dire is the inclusion of live Dungeon Masters. These DMs can show up to run events or appear as special NPCs like merchants and blacksmiths, offering limited-time interactions such as unique items, enhancements, and occasional fighter adjustments. When active, this feature helps the world feel more responsive than a typical menu-driven, session-based RPG.
Heroes of Dire Key Features:
- Turn-based Tactical Combat – engage in grid encounters where initiative is influenced by the cost of actions, rewarding careful pacing and positioning.
- Millions of Fighters – recruit procedurally generated units across six classes, ten races, fifty weapon classes, and four armor classes, keeping roster building varied.
- Live Dungeon Masters – join live-run events where Dungeon Masters can appear as special vendors or crafters with unusual items and services.
- Shared Fighters – bring borrowed fighters into battle, AI-controlled when their owner is offline, or player-controlled when they decide to join in.
- Guilds and PvP Warfare – participate in guild conflicts that can grow into large-scale battles, plus smaller PvP fights aimed at ranking progression.

Heroes of Dire is developed and published by Spellbook, an indie studio known for free-to-play RPG and MMO projects across multiple platforms, including The Infinite Black and Rings of Night. Development was led primarily by Ozymandias, who was well known in the community for hands-on communication and for streaming work on the game during its creation.
The project went to Kickstarter on April 27, 2016 with a $20,000 funding target, describing the game as already largely built due to revenue from the studio’s earlier titles. Interest was strong immediately, and the campaign reached its goal in under two hours. By the time it closed on May 27, 2016, it had raised $113,464, clearing the initial target and unlocking multiple stretch goals.
Backers received access to an alpha on June 29, 2016, and the wider audience followed with an open beta on September 28, 2016. The first live server arrived in November 2016, establishing the game’s persistent cross-platform environment. Heroes of Dire later expanded its reach with a Steam launch on March 15, 2017
