Ever, Jane

Ever, Jane was an MMORPG built around social maneuvering rather than combat, set in a Jane Austen inspired Regency world of etiquette, gossip, and reputation. Instead of grinding monsters, players created personal dramas through role-play, and many of the game’s “quests” emerged from what the community did, said, and stirred up at parties.

Overview

Ever, Jane Overview

Ever, Jane flips the usual MMO power fantasy on its head. Your sharpest weapon is not a blade or a spell, it is your ability to shape public opinion. Players “compete” through a gossip-driven PvP system where rumors, insinuations, and social positioning can elevate you into polite society or quietly ruin you. The twist is that deceit is risky, if you are exposed as spreading falsehoods with malicious intent, the social consequences can be severe, up to being effectively shunned and excluded from invitations that form the core of the game’s loop.

The setting leans hard into the manners and tensions of Regency-era England, filtered through the kind of social critique associated with Jane Austen’s work. Progress is tied to reputation and relationships, not to combat stats, and much of the moment-to-moment play happens through conversation, attendance, and participation in events hosted by other players. A character’s behavior and standing are reinforced by a set of Personality Traits, which act as both role-play prompts and mechanical levers that change how you navigate high society. Climbing the social ladder can make you more visible and influential, but also turns you into a more tempting target for rivals who want to undermine you.

Ever, Jane Key Features:

  • Character Customization – shape your identity with a suite of character traits that influence how you fit into society, including: Status, Happiness, Kindness, Duty, Reputation, Gentility, Wealth, Beauty, Grace, and Wit.
  • Attend a Ball or Dinner Party – collect gowns, formalwear, and carriages to present yourself properly at large player-hosted gatherings, where your personality traits can climb rapidly.
  • Family System – a guild-like structure where players band together as a household, working to raise collective standing and weather scandals that could damage the entire family’s reputation.
  • Gossip and Intrigue – advance through social conflict instead of monster slaying, using influence, alliances, and well-timed information to secure your place among the elite.
  • Mini Games – participate in period-appropriate activities drawn from the day-to-day pastimes seen in Austen’s fiction, including ballroom dancing, Whist, embroidery, hunting, fishing, and other diversions that feed into personality traits.

Development History / Background:

Ever, Jane was developed and published by 3 Turn Productions, a small studio with a mission to build historically grounded virtual worlds inspired by classic literature. The project began publicly as a Kickstarter campaign launched on October 29, 2013, aiming for a $100,000 USD goal. It ultimately finished at $109,563 USD, supporting a planned release window around 2016. A closed beta followed on September 9, 2015, and an open beta was initially expected in January 2016. With closed beta interest proving stronger than anticipated, the team opted to keep that phase running through Q1 2016 to accommodate more players while continuing to refine core systems.

Ever, Jane later shut down on December 20, 2020, after it could not maintain enough subscribers to reliably cover ongoing server and operational costs.
