Divergence: Online Overview
Divergence: Online is a science-fiction sandbox MMO that positions itself as a modern nod to the player-driven ideals popularized by MMORPGs like Star Wars Galaxies. At character creation you can pick from eight races, then commit to one of three factions, which helps shape how you fit into the wider conflict and economy. The setting is a massive 250km² landmass without loading screens, built to encourage long treks, scouting runs, and the kind of “find a spot and make it yours” progression that only works in a truly persistent world.
A major pillar of the game is resource acquisition. Using surveying tools, you search for deposits scattered across the surface, then move quickly to capitalize, because those nodes are shared across the server and can be depleted by others. That depletion mechanic makes information valuable, players who scout well can control supply lines, and groups can carve out real economic leverage simply by being organized and fast.
Crafting is where those raw materials become meaningful. Different ingredients affect the final item, so the same weapon or component can vary based on the alloys, grades, and mixes used. The system encourages experimentation, letting crafters tune stats such as weight and other performance characteristics by choosing materials with intent rather than simply following a single recipe path. It is also a social system in disguise, because specialized crafters and harvesters can become important to a settlement’s supply chain.
On top of that, the game leans into flexibility through progression. There are 40 career paths, and the idea is to combine them to create a character that fulfills a specific niche, whether that is production, combat, logistics, or community building. Housing and settlement tools support long-term play as well, since you can place a home out in the world and coordinate with others to establish a city, giving the sandbox a tangible sense of ownership. None of it is safe, though, because PvP is not restricted to arenas or opt-in zones, so every trip into the wild carries risk.

Development History / Background:
Divergence: Online comes from indie studio Stained Glass Llama. Work on the project started in 2006 under lead designer Ethan Casner, but the effort struggled to gain funding through early crowdfunding attempts and effectively went quiet for a period. Years later development picked back up, followed by a successful IndieGoGo push that brought in $24,000 by April 22, 2013. After that, the team also took the project to Kickstarter on August 02, 2013, ultimately collecting close to $20,000 by September 01, 2013.
The game later entered Steam’s ecosystem through Greenlight, with its submission dated October 06, 2015 and eventual approval. Divergence: Online then arrived on Steam as a buy-to-play Early Access release on January 06, 2016, which is also listed as its release date.
