Blackwake

Blackwake is a naval action MMO built around crew-based ship combat, putting you on an 18th Century warship where every cannon shot and sail adjustment depends on teamwork. Instead of piloting a vessel alone, you join a full crew, swap duties on the fly, and try to outmaneuver rival ships through coordinated broadsides, boarding actions, and last-second repairs.

Blackwake Overview

Blackwake is a naval action MMO centered on large-scale ship battles where players fill the jobs that keep an 18th Century vessel fighting. One match can feel like a busy deck crew simulation and a chaotic shooter at the same time, as you sprint between cannons, rigging, and repair points while enemy ships attempt to cripple you with well-timed volleys.

Rather than locking you into a permanent class, Blackwake encourages role swapping as the situation changes. You might start on a cannon, jump to repairs when the hull is taking on water, then grab a blade to repel boarders. The Captain role focuses on decision-making and coordination, calling targets and positioning the ship, but the crew ultimately determines whether those orders turn into results. The game also plays with the social side of command, letting the crew follow leadership, ignore it, or even mutiny through a democratic process.

Combat mixes artillery duels with close-range aggression. You can trade broadsides, attempt rams, set ships ablaze, or board for melee skirmishes with a cutlass. Because damage control and positioning matter as much as raw aim, battles tend to swing quickly when one side manages to break the other crew’s rhythm. Blackwake also supports different match formats, including faction vs. faction and objective-driven modes, and it features a range of ship sizes, from compact frigates designed for smaller crews to massive warships that can hold up to 40 players.

Blackwake Key Features:

  • Various Ships – crew up on multiple ship types that support roughly 8 to 40 players per vessel.
  • Scenario-Based Game Modes –jump into faction battles, objective-focused matches, and other structured scenarios.
  • No Class Roles – switch tasks whenever needed, whether that means firing cannons, steering, repairing, or boarding.
  • Cooperative Gameplay –success depends on coordination, timing, and a captain and crew that communicate well.
  •  Dynamic Battles – fights shift fast with ramming attempts, boarding pushes, fires, and emergency repairs happening mid-engagement.

Development History / Background:

Blackwake is being developed by the indie team Mastfire Studios, a two-person studio with developers based in the United States and Australia. Funding began with an initial Kickstarter campaign launched in November, 2004 that did not reach its $34,000 AUD target, finishing at $7,683 AUD. A later Kickstarter, started on August 03, 2015, succeeded and brought in $171,422 AUD.

The project also went through Steam Greenlight, where it appeared on November 04, 2014 and was approved on November 26, 2014. During the Kickstarter messaging, the developers indicated there would not be an Early Access release, but Blackwake ultimately launched as an Early Access title on Steam on February 24, 2017
