Overview

Battle Battalions Overview

Battle Battalions is an arena-style strategy MOBA where you command a compact force of modern military units instead of a single hero. Teams of five compete to control key areas of the map, with each player filling a role through their chosen Battalion composition and perk choices. The core loop is about rotating between objectives, taking smart fights, and using terrain and vision to avoid getting caught out.

Before each match, you tailor your Battalion using a mix of unit types, ranging from nimble recon options like Humvees to heavier frontline machines like tanks. As the match progresses you earn experience and credits, letting you improve your force and lean into a preferred play pattern through perks. Winning is objective-driven rather than purely kill-focused, you capture and hold Primary Objectives to generate points. The first team to reach 250 points takes the match.

Moment to moment, the game leans hard into micromanagement. You are expected to position units carefully, split them when needed, and take advantage of the landscape to set up ambushes or safer approaches. Good play often comes down to managing angles, timing pushes with allies, and keeping your units in the right place before a fight starts rather than trying to brute-force a bad engagement.

Battle Battalions Key Features:

  • Quick match flow – designed for relatively snappy sessions, with controls that are easy to understand while still rewarding mastery.
  • Terrain-based tactics – use brush for concealment and look for elevation and chokepoints to improve your engagements.
  • Objective-first scoring – capture points marked A, B, and C to build score, and win by reaching 250 points.
  • Multiple unit options – build a Battalion from different unit styles, including fast armor like the Predator tank and infantry such as the rocket-focused Enforcer.
  • Hands-on unit control – manage units individually, repositioning them constantly to gain an advantage in fights.

Battle Battalions Review

Battle Battalions aimed to merge MOBA pacing with RTS-style squad control, and its most distinctive quality is how much responsibility it puts on moment-to-moment positioning. Instead of piloting one character with a kit, you are juggling multiple units and trying to keep them effective as the front line shifts. That focus gives the game a tactical feel that stands apart from more ability-driven MOBAs, but it also narrows the audience because the workload can be demanding.

At a high level, matches revolve around controlling the three main objectives (A, B, and C) and choosing when to contest versus when to rotate. Because score is tied to map control, the best teams are usually the ones that coordinate movement, arrive together, and deny the opponent easy captures. Skirmishes tend to have clear swing points, a good flank through cover, a well-timed collapse from an ally, or a pick that opens space to secure an objective.

The Battalion customization is a big part of the appeal. Different unit types naturally push you toward different responsibilities, scouting and harassment, holding territory, or acting as a heavy spearhead. Earning experience and credits during the match helps your force scale, and perks add another layer of identity so two players can approach the same role with different priorities. When the system clicks, it creates satisfying team compositions where each player contributes a distinct piece of the overall plan.

Where Battle Battalions can struggle is accessibility and friction. The micromanagement that makes it interesting can also feel unforgiving if you are used to a single-avatar control scheme, and mistakes can snowball when you lose control of the map. The game also depended heavily on having enough active players to keep matchmaking brisk, and with a low playerbase, queue times could undercut the “jump in and play” promise.

As a concept, it is a smart take on the genre, objective-focused, team-oriented, and grounded in a modern military theme rather than fantasy archetypes. Players who enjoy tactical positioning, coordinated rotations, and managing multiple units will likely appreciate what it was going for. Those looking for a more relaxed MOBA, or who dislike constant micro, may find it tiring rather than engaging.

Development History / Background:

Battle Battalions was developed by independent studio Petroglyph Games. It is closely associated with Victory Command, a military-themed MOBA that served as a spiritual forerunner but was eventually pulled from Steam after a long pause following its beta period. Using lessons and community feedback from that earlier test, Petroglyph built Battle Battalions as a separate product with a similar foundation but its own identity.

Petroglyph is also known for work in the strategy space, including the real-time strategy title Grey Goo, and the team-based PvP game Battle for Graxia.

Battle Battalions shut down on May 24, 2018.
