Arena of Fate

Arena of Fate was planned as a free to play MOBA from Crytek that aimed to stand out through its roster, pulling together recognizable figures from history and classic fantasy. Instead of the usual all original champions, you could jump into a standard 5v5 match as characters like Nikola Tesla or Joan of Arc, alongside storybook staples such as Little Red Riding Hood and Robin Hood.

Overview

Arena of Fate Overview

Arena of Fate represented Crytek’s attempt to step into the MOBA space with a clear hook, familiar characters reimagined for competitive team play. The core structure followed the genre’s traditional format, two teams of five contest lanes, skirmish over neutral objectives, and build power over the course of a match, while coordinating to secure a decisive push.

The defining design choice was pacing. Matches were built around a firm time cap, with games designed to end within 20 minutes. In practice, that concept encourages early action and objective play, since stalling for a late game comeback is less reliable when the clock is always a factor. The ruleset also supported multiple victory paths, giving teams ways to win through points, base pressure, or simply leading when time runs out.

On the player side, Arena of Fate offered seven roles and emphasized flexible character growth. Instead of feeling locked into a single optimal path, players could spend gold on traits and other upgrades that shaped how a hero developed during a match, which helped reinforce the idea of adapting your build to the opposing team and the current game state.

What defines Arena of Fate:

  • Classic 5v5 MOBA structure – Team based lane combat with objectives and coordinated pushes.
Trait based growth – Gold can be invested into traits, letting you customize how your hero scales over the match.
  • Short, time capped matches – A 20 minute limit aims to keep the tempo high and reduce drawn out stalemates.
  • History meets fantasy – The roster blends real world figures and fictional characters, letting unlikely allies share the same lineup, for example Frankenstein alongside Sherlock.
  • Multiple win conditions – Outscore (reach 10 points via kills and objectives), Overwhelm (destroy the enemy base), or Outlast (lead on points when the timer expires).

Development History / Background:

Arena of Fate was created at Crytek Black Sea (Crytek’s Hungarian studio) and built on CryEngine 3. The project was positioned as Crytek’s move into the MOBA genre that titles like League of Legends and DotA 2 helped bring into the mainstream. It was revealed in May 2014 with plans for PC and consoles, and it appeared publicly in a playable form around E3 2014. Although it was discussed with an expected launch window later in 2015, the game never reached a confirmed release. On March 07, 2017, Crytek announced Crytek Black Sea would be sold to Sega, and Arena of Fate was canceled as part of that wider change.
