Overview

Hockey Dash Overview

Hockey Dash has the same ‘street’ style gameplay found in most sports MMOs like FreeStyle Street Basketball.  The game is easy to pick up and play, but still offers many competitive game modes.  Plenty of solo gameplay including missions and minigames allow new players to practice before jumping into multiplayer games.  Computer controlled bots can be thrown into matches to balance the sides, or gamers can play cooperatively against a team of bots.  There are three positions in Hockey Dash: Forward, Center, and Defense.  Players can chose from a male and female version of each position for a total of six characters with different stat distributions.

Positions:

Forward – Versatile offense and defense.  Especially good at shooting.

Defense - Impenetrable defense with bodychecking.  Great long distance shots.

Center - Great stick handling.  Controls the flow of the game with quick movements.

Hockey Dash Review

By Omer Altay

Hockey Dash is a 3D, street hockey sports MMO with anime-inspired graphics.  Graphically speaking, the game’s art style is very similar to that of FreeStyle Street Basketball from GameKiss.  Hockey Dash wasn’t the first Hockey themed MMO, as that honor belongs to Slapshot from Gamigo, which was shut down in early 2010.  One thing worth mentioning right away is that Hockey Dash has a low playerbase, which makes it hard to find other people to play against at times.  Even though Hockey Dash wasn’t the first game in the genre, it’s a game that fans of sports MMOs should enjoy.

Character Creation
Upon first logging into Hockey Dash, players will be prompted to create a character.  The game offers three “positions, which are basically classes that can be played.  They are Forward, Defence and Center.  Forwards are the most versatile position as they are decent at both offense and defense.  The defence position, as the name implies, is great at playing defense and making long distance shots.  Centers are an exceptional “support” position as they have the best speed, dribble, pass and steal attributes in the game.  Unfortunately the only customization options in the character creation screen involve picking a gender and a position, which means players look identical to each other early on.  Players can customize their appearance later on by buying clothing in the game’s store.

Gameplay
The core gameplay mechanics in Hockey Dash are quite simple.  Aside from the D-Pad which is used to move around, the game only has four buttons – WSAD.  Players should get a “feel” for the game after a few matches, but actually mastering the game can take much longer.  The game’s tutorial isn’t long, but if you don’t want to be completely lost in your first few matches it’s worth completing.  The W key performs a “Bodycheck” which basically slams into an opponent and has a chance of knocking them down (what’s hockey without smashing into other people?), and the A key is for “Deking”, which can be executed near the goal and it basically jouks the goalkeeper which makes scoring much easier.  The S key is used to pass the puck to teammates when you have control of puck and stealing when you don’t.  The D key is used for shooting.

The shooting mechanic in Hockey Dash is a bit awkward and takes a lot of practice master. In fact, the shooting system is downright confusing at times.  Even perfectly aimed shots can sometimes miss.  When you hold D to take a shot, you need to aim at the right location and time your shot.  It’s a bit difficult for me to explain, but the tutorial explains it well.

Team Work And SkillZ
Team work is extremely important in Hockey Dash.  In fact, it’s extremely difficult to win a match without team synergy.  Players earn gold, the game’s currency, for winning matches as well as experience.  Gold can be used to purchase both attribute enhancing clothing as well as skills.  Just like FreeStyle, skills must be purchased in the game’s shop to be used.  Like many other actions in the game, skills use stamina.  As is, all of the game’s three classes have access to the same skills.  It’s sort of lame that each class doesn’t have their own set of skills, but more skills may be released in the future.  One major complaint I have with Hockey Dash is that the game’s store doesn’t have a large selection of items.  There are actually very few different outfits available in the entire store.

Stamina System
If there’s one thing Hockey Dash got right, is its stamina system.  Each action in the game, aside from regular movement, requires stamina.  Things like holding shift to run faster, bodychecking and using skills drains stamina.  Stamina regenerates on its own when it’s not being drained, but players need to carefully manage their stamina if they want to do well.

Game Modes
There are two kinds of multiplayer game modes in Hockey Dash – Normal mode and Item Match.  Normal mode is straight-up Hockey.  Two teams with a maximum of four players per side face off in full court of half court game.  Whichever team scores the most points wins the game.  Item match on the other hand spices things up by adding an element of randomness to the game.  Items spawn randomly on the rink that can be picked up by any player.  Certain items can boost your own attributes while others can be thrown at enemies to slow them down.

Hockey Dash has a few non-multiplayer modes as well.  Mission mode allows players to compete against others in various single player challenges.  Players earn gold depending on how well they do in missions and high scores are ranked in the leaderboards.  The game only has a handful of missions, but they’re a good way to get some practice in before jumping into actual matches.  Another single player game mode is a 3v3 AI match, which I strongly recommend players run a few times just to get a feel for the game.

Final Verdict – Fair
Hockey Dash just doesn’t feel as “easy” to get into as games like FIFA Online and FreeStyle: Street Basketball, but the game is still fun once you get the hang of it.  As is the skills are a bit imbalanced and the game does suffer from several obvious bugs, but hopefully those will be tweaked later on.  The game certainly won’t appeal to everyone, but those who enjoy competitive, skill-based sports games should find something to like in Hockey Dash.
