Weekly Recap #403 April 17th – Heroes of the Storm, DCUO, WoW Classic & More!
JamesBl0nde recaps the MMO gaming news for the week of April 17, 2020! Transcript, links, and timestamps follow.
League of Angels is back again, Phantasy Star Online 2 gets a PC release date, the famous Birds of Prey land in DCUO and it looks like we might be back to asking the age old question… can it run crysis?! Whats up guys! JamesBl0nde here with the weekly recap for gaming news and announcements for the week of April 17th 2020.
We rarely hear from Heroes of the Storm but this week they blasted a new trailer to showcase their brand new update. This update made some big changes to structures like towers and keeps with improved AI targeting, increased damage, and armor debuffs. Each battleground’s core also has a new ability. On top of that, the new Dark Nexus II event has kicked off! Kind of nice to see that Heroes hasn’t died yet.
Armored Warfare has also kicked off a new event – the month-long Spirithaven Raid. Playing begin raiding from the middle of a territory, with a Samurai skin reward waiting in each of the four corners of the map. You must advance by completing randomized missions, which include PvE and PvP challenges. Complete all challenges and you’ll earn a Japanese themed Torii camoflague.
If you thought that there were enough League of Angels games – you were wrong! This week Yoozoo Games officially launched its newest League of Angels title, Heaven’s Fury. You’ll find some of the same themes here – gods fallen from grace and gorgeous Angels to join you in your quest to restore Heaven. The game features three classes – Dragoon, Mage, and Archer – and promises new PvP and PvE modes. If you’re cooped up indoors and getting bored, what do you have to lose to check it out?
And some big news for Phantasy Star Online fans – not only has PSO2 launched on Xbox as a free title, but the PC version is supposed to land in late May. Cross-play will be enabled on PC’s launch too so you can play with friends who are already playing on Xbox. There’s a lot of launch bonuses so make sure you check out the link in the description below.
MapleStory is taking familiars to task next week with a major familiar revamp that’s just been announced. This familiar revamp will overhaul the familiar UI, make familiars grow alongside their character instead of having static requirements, adds familiar slots, and fully change how familiars grow and do battle. You can also earn Familiar badges and much more. Head to the link below to get… familiar… with these new changes.
And it’s time for Blood for the Blood God… in World of Warcraft Classic. Yes this week WoW classic released its Zul’Gurub update, which introduces the 20-player raid instance filled with trolls (and I’m not talking about your fellow raid members). Take on 13 challenging bosses, take a chance to earn two special mounts, and of course, grab epic gear. And if you’re not into raiding, well good news, the Stranglethorn fishing tournament is also live now. Fish blood or troll blood, we all have to get by somehow.
Meanwhile Destiny 2 has kicked off its three week event, the Guardian Games. This event is all about proving which class is the best. You can take part in daily class challenges to earn daily reward packages, plus a new Exotic machine gun, new Exotic ghosts, and other metallic class items. These items will display as bronze, silver, or gold depending on your class’s placement – and when the event is over, that metallic look is locked in for the rest of the year! Not only that but the Tower will have a marker showcasing the top class for the remainder of the year too. And there’s a weekly quest with a Bungie Rewards Guardian Game box as the prize. Lots of cool stuff to earn if you’re competitive enough.
It’s time for some femme fatale power in DC Universe Online as the game launches its Birds of Prey episode! Black Canary, Huntress, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn team up to head into Lex Luthor’s lair and find out just what the mad villain is up to. There’s a new open world mission, alert, and two new raids waiting, plus of course, lots of new loot. And it’s a great time to jump in as Episodes 1-35 in DCUO are free until May 11th.
We’d be remiss to not mention the tons of new reveals and gameplay showcased this week by Legends of Runeterra, too. The League of Legends based card game is ramping up for its April 30 launch date with daily trailers showcasing gameplay, new champions, and even cinematics. Just this week they’ve revealed Sejuani, Maokai, Quinn, and Swain, showcased Braum, Thresh, and Darius, and shown off gameplay of several regions. Of course if you can’t wait for the launch you can go ahead and jump in the open beta free now – great time to get your feet wet with something new.
Since it’s been a quiet week it’d be a shame not to mention two pretty cool reveals this week that aren’t MMOs – yeah if you’re here for only free to play stuff you can tune out for a minute. First of all we had a surprise reveal of a new Xcom game, XCOM Chimera Squad. What’s really crazy about this is that it’s set to launch in just a week! Not only that, but you can preorder the game from 2K or from Steam for only $10, which is half off its full price. Seriously if you love XCOM this is worth picking up.
On top of that, yesterday it was finally confirmed that Crysis – the classic, meme-inspiring FPS – is getting a remaster. Yes it’s real, and it’s supposed to feature major graphical improvements including agnostic ray tracing. All I know is Today, we ask the question once again… Yeah, but can it run Crysis?
And with that said, that’s about it for all the major news and announcements for this week. Be sure to stay safe, and keep your families healthy!
