Wrath of Heroes Review
By Ange Perdu
Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes or WoH is a three-team PvP arena-style combat game by Bioware Mythic. Based off the original Warhammer Online game series, the warring realms of Order and Chaos are still fighting but it’s not up to players to save the world. This time around it’s more about winning the battle than anything else. There are no tedious quests or endless grinding in this game. Players simply go toe to toe with each other for the title of top hero. Some of the characters will be familiar to previous WAR fans. Players can choose from 10 different set characters also known as heroes. Each hero is randomly placed on a team consisting of six players and transported to a special zone for fast paced warfare. Game modes vary from capture the flag to arena death matches. Much like World of Warcraft players can level up and master various skills to give their heroes an advantage during combat.
Don’t Bring a Blade to an Enchanted Battle, the Gameplay
Players start out on their home dashboard where chats and hero selection takes place. Similar to Bloodline Champions it’s a fast paced team-oriented PvP game. There’s no traditional lobby section that allows users to browse available matches. When players click on the play tab they are randomly assigned to a particular map mode and team. In Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes features capture the flag, capture runes, and arena are the three core modes. Like other MMOs during the capture the flag mode players divided into three teams of six must defend their towers’ flags at all costs while attempting to steal both of the opposing teams’ post. Players use the standard WASD keys for movement and their preset skill hotkeys to initiates attack. There’s a small map viewable in the corner of the screen and a very cool radio chat button that often comes in handy. The radio chat feature allows players to sound a vocal attack, follow me, behind you, split up, help, and even focus command to fellow teammates. This feature assists players in strategizing as a unit. For players that have been slaughtered while attempting to type a message through the chat box, this option is long awaited.
All matches have a 15 minute time limit. Before and in between respawns of a match players can swap their heroes. At the end of each battle stats for kills, assists, and even deaths are added. Depending on how well a hero performed players earn XP and a chance to spin a wheel for a coin reward. During the Capture Runes mode players must kill other players to take their runes. Once a rune has been stolen that hero must quickly bring it to their team’s tower to secure it. The team with 3 rune tokens in their tower receives a temporary boost allowing them to accumulate a large amount of points over time. There’s more strategy involved in this mode but it’s equally entertaining. The 6v6v6 combat can be exciting with elemental bombs exploding and heroes attacking at every angle. Players have to run through hills, up stairs, and face-off in cathedral-style towers. Often players will be forced to play the same map mode over and over again due to the auto selection process. The repeated modes can make the gameplay feel repetitive at times.
Another mode in WoH is the Arena. The entire game feels like an arena battle so there’s not much of a difference between this match and the others. Heroes are divided into three teams of six with the goal of accumulating as many kills as possible. Like most of the game, it’s sheer chaos and loads of fun. The arena battlefield features massive tree trunks with moving eyes that players can climb on top of to fire at enemies below. There are also healing boosts hidden on the turf up for grabs. Players can really enjoy unleashing their hero’s powers in this zone. Unfortunately, unlike Heroes of Newerth the skill options are limited. Players have access to any hero’s skill mastery tree that they own. There’s a set skill hotkey that appears at the bottom of the screen during combat. As a player levels up through match participation they earn mastery points. Additional skills and boosts can be unlocked through a hero’s mastery tree if a player has enough mastery points to do so. Only three extra skills can be selected by players to use in battles and the rest of the hotkeys are permanently set. Each character features signature moves and spells. Propel fireballs, shoot fiery blasts, shower foes with a rain of fire, expel a flame breath, and produce a conflagration of doom to destroy enemies. Since players are unable to pick and choose all of the skills they wish to equip their character with the mastery trees is less appealing.
Greenskins to Dwarves
For fans of the original game there’s an opportunity to play as a Greenskin or Dwarf depending on your hero rooster. Players earn the hero called Lucian the Blade through the beginner tutorial and then they’re given access to three more heroes to use in battles. The access to these heroes is restricted. Players are unable to fully level up their skills until they’ve actually purchased that particular character. In the shop area all 9 official heroes are up for sale. Buy Aessa, Bax, Drulg, Felicia, GlowGob, Ikkrik, Ilanya, Nethys, and Volrik for anywhere between 30,000 to 60,000 coins. All items and heroes can be bought in the shop using in-game coins earned through battles. However, the shop item selection in WOH is very small. There are no weapons. Only short XP boosts that increase experience totals after battles for 24 hours, gold boosts, and mystery chests are available. The character customization options are also limited. Heroes are pre-made and just a few of them feature skins. Skins which are also available in the shop slightly alter a character’s appearance. If a default character wears leather pants than the option skin may be a dress with the same color pattern. It’s not impressive. Felicia’s Flambearer, GlowGob’s Snotling Suit, Ikkrik’s Silentdeath, Ilanya’s The Poisoned Bloom, and Volrick’s Ravenblessed skins are there for those players that desperately desire a new look.
Overall Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes is a solid arena-style PvP game. Players get to enter WAR’s fantasy setting to indulge in some serious 6v6v6 competitive combat. Choose from up to 10 preset heroes and switch in between respawns. Become a Greenskin, an elf, or a healing goblin of mercy. Participate in various map modes like Capture Rune or Arena. Unlock powerful spells and tactics to assist your friends in kills. Although players are unable to fully customize their heroes they can still perform major damage on the battlefield and score high on the Leaderboards in this fast paced F2P MMO. Anyone who enjoys PvP or fans of the Warhammer Online series should definitely try out this gem from Bioware Mythic.
