Wolfteam is an innovative MMO shooter by Softnyx that truly spices up the genre. Players can transform from marines to melee-oriented wolves at any time with the click of a button. This unique gameplay element alone adds a great deal of strategy to the game, and also adds some variety to a genre that’s well known for imitation and lack of creativity. The game has a whopping thirty-five different ‘primary weapons’, and a fair array of ‘secondary’ and ‘misc’ weapons for players to use, which makes Wolfteam one of the most varied MMOFPS games out there.

Wolfteam Full Review

Wolfteam is a breath of fresh air into the MMO shooter genre, as the game does something that most shooters don’t -innovate. The game borrows the ‘good’ features from other established MMORPGs and builds on it, rather than just copying them and changing a few cosmetics and labeling it as a new game. Wolfteam has the incredibly polished gameplay of titles like Combat Arms and S4 League, mixed with its own splash of uniqueness. The game’s ‘uniqueness’ is the ability for players to switch the standard MMO FPS marine to an armored and fast melee-oriented ‘wolf’ at anytime.
Wait what? Marines to Wolves? What’s going on here?!
Wolfteam plays a lot like every other MMO tactical shooter, but the twist here is that players can at anytime switch from their standard first person ‘marine’ to a tough and agile melee-oriented ‘wolf’ that can run on walls and jump incredibly high. This aspect of Wolfteam introduces a great deal of strategy to the game, as players now have to be able quickly transform at the right time. At times you may find yourself having to decide whether you’re better off reloading your gun or transforming into a wolf to claw at your enemy. Wolfteam definitely has a stronger emphasis on ‘marine’ gameplay, but both ‘marines’ and ‘wolves’ have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. A ‘marine’ can usually quickly kill an enemy wolf from a distance, but if they’re within melee range a ‘wolf’ can quickly dispose of any marine within seconds, so players will have to master when to transform.
Okay, nuff Wolf talk, What about the core gameplay?
Aside from the game’s unique transformation component, Wolfteam’s core gameplay is incredibly fun and polished. Players can play with up to 16 people online in four different game modes. The four game modes are conquest, deathmatch, destruction, and wolf conquest. One thing to note in Wolfteam is that all of the game mode’s are team-based, so even though deathmatch may sound like it’s a ‘free for all’, it’s not. I’m not sure why Softnyx didn’t just label it ‘team deathmatch’, as it would have been more accurate. ‘Conquest’ mode is a base capturing game where players on each team have to secure all or as many of the five bases as possible on the map within the game’s times limit. The team that captures all of the bases wins, or if no team captures all of the bases, the team with the most bases wins. ‘Deathmatch’ is pretty straight forward, whichever team reaches a pre-determined amount of kills first wins. ‘Destruction’ involves one team planting a bomb, while the other tries to defuse it, similar to the gameplay mechanics of Counter-Strike. ‘Wolf Conquest’ is the same thing as ‘conquest’, but one team is composed of entirely marines while the other is made up of all wolves. The game’s multiple modes definitely help spice up the game, but the most popular modes online are without a doubt Deathmatch and Conquest. One of the Wolfteam’s most attractive aspects is the fact that the game has a huge selection of weapons and items in the store.
Wolfteam has the hands-down largest selection of purchasable weapons of any MMO shooter. After quickly browsing the store, I counted thirty-five primary weapons, but after checking Wolf Team’s official site, I discovered that the game actually had a whopping forty-five primary assault weapons and ten primary long range weapons. The game’s assault weapons range from the popular AK-47’s and M16s to the more obscure SZ-552 N’s and EXM-26CS’s, while ranged primary weapons include I-115 WT bolt action snipers to EM-72 A5 LAW rocket launchers. Aside from primary assault and ranged weapons, Wolfteam also has secondary weapons and grenades, so the actual total number of weapons is even higher I previously stated. The fact is that Wolfteam simply has a massive array of weapons and items to purchase in the game’s store makes it the most content-rich MMO shooter out there. On top of the incredible selection of weapons, the game also allows players to customize weapons by upgrading them with better parts, so the total possible weapon combinations and upgrades are almost limitless.
Wolfteam just has a lot of content to keep you coming back. The game’s ranking system, for example, has an incredible sixty-two different ranks, or ‘levels’, ranging from the lowly ‘Recruit’ to the glamorous ‘General of the Army’. Certain weapons and items have rank requirements, so you’ll need to up your rank before you can begin using some of the more powerful weapons Wolfteam has to offer. Unlike other MMORPGs that let players freely use their most powerful weapons online, Wolfteam has a system to keep games balanced, as players can only use their most powerful weapons once they earn enough ‘WP’, which is basically currency in the actual matches themselves. Think of it like this -whenever you purchase a weapon in the game’s store for the first time, you basically purchase the right to be able to use it in an actual game, but in order to use it in the game, you have to purchase it with ‘WP’ points earned in that match by getting kills. This system may seem a bit awkward, but it’s an incredibly creative way to prevent the players with the best guns from having a ridiculously unfair advantage because they won’t be able to constantly use their best weapons. Wolfteam just has an incredible amount of content, so if you’re even remotely entertained by shooters, there’s no reason not to download this game and give it a go.
Final Verdict: Excellent
All in all, Wolfteam is one of the best MMO shooting games out there. Its polished gameplay, coupled with the incredible amount of content, results in pure fun. The only problem is that the game does have some hackers who can quickly ruin things for everyone.
