Wind Slayer Overview

Wind Slayer 2 is the sequel to Wind Slayer, which shut down in July 2011. The game’s colorful, almost whimsical graphics guide players to adventure in a 2D side-scrolling world. With six class options that later branch into two other classes each, no two classes feel the same. The game also offers an extensive crafting system, as well as PvP and a mentor system to help new players advance.

Warrior – Warriors are in Wind Slayer are the traditional melee oriented class with strong defense and powerful melee attacks. They also have the largest amount of hit points in the game.

Rogue - Rogues in Wind Slayer are capable of dealing massive amounts of damage relatively quickly but have low hit points and weaker defense than the other melee classes.

ArcherArchers in Wind Slayer are capable of attacking their enemies from a distance with powerful attacks but are vulnerable to in melee combat.

Mage - Mages in Wind Slayer are able to do massive amounts of damage from a distance with their spells but have some of the lowest hit points and armor in the game.

Monk - Monks in Wind Slayer are adept at using martial arts to defeat their enemies. They can deal powerful melee attacks using their fists alone but lack the defensive capabilities of a warrior.

Priest - Priests in Wind Slayer are the traditional ‘healer’ archetype. They are supportive characters that can be valuable assets to any group.

Creating a Slayer

Ignited Games keeps character creation relatively simple. You choose gender and may then choose between four or five different options for hair style, hair color, and face type. You can also choose the style of your starting equipment. Once you’ve created a character and entered the game, you’re given a tutorial on the game’s functions. Movement, looting and combat are all covered. The tutorial begins the game’s storyline, and offers a bit of humor in the form of two grumpy old men posing as a fox and a rabbit. Don’t worry, though: you beat up both of them in the end.

Move Like the Wind

For a 2D side-scrolling MMO, the controls are fairly awkward. Space is used for interacting with NPCs, objects, or items. Where many side-scrollers use the up and down arrow keys to open items or loot, Wind Slayer 2 uses space for everything. Light and Heavy attacks are mapped by default to S and D respectively. Skills can be mapped to number keys 1-6 and QWERTY. The QWERTY keys are best used for your combat abilities, while the number keys are useful for secondary skills like buffs or crafting. Even after a few hours of play, the controls were still not intuitive.

The controls do offer one positive element, however: dashing. Double tapping a directional arrow propels your character forward, and is the fastest way to move in the game. Unfortunately, the sound effect for this move becomes quickly annoying.

Beat ‘Em Up!

Combat in Wind Slayer 2 is very simplistic. You can chain up to three light attacks, and using a heavy attack will end the chain. Skills cannot be used in a chain, but offer more powerful attacks, some of which will give you a slight attack advantage.

Enemies will only attack when you’re not hitting them. Continued series of attacks will prevent you from taking damage. There is no area of effect in your attacks, which means that you will be unable to focus on a single target in a crowd. This also makes it difficult to defend yourself, as enemies you are not attacking can still hurt you.

Some Change is Good

Wind Slayer 2 uses a basic quest system for character progression, and there is little variety in questing. Most quests simply require killing x amount of enemies, or collecting y amount of items from those enemies. There are also timed quests, which are function like normal quests (for example, you may be given five minutes to go across four maps to kill ten enemies, and then hustle back to the quest giver).

Wind Slayer 2 allows you to change your class at level 10, 30 and 60. The first class change allows the journeyman character (everyone’s starting class) to choose between Warrior, Rogue, Monk, Archer, Priest, or Mage. At level 30, each class divides to two additional advanced classes. The last class change at level 60 is not yet available, but will likely offer further advanced classes based on the first two class selections.

Skills to Pay the Bills

The game offers generic skills to use, including crafting. Each class has specific bonus skills available to them: monks, for example, get various martial arts abilities that allow them to kick and punch opponents. The game also offers item enhancement and enchantment, which strengthens equipment and adds additional effects. Both of these abilities are not learned immediately; you must earn them through leveling up.

Crafting in Wind Slayer 2 is simple. Most cities have a crafting area, which has both crafting tools and an area to search for ingredients. The process is tedious and costly, however, as you need to buy an axe every time you want to chop a tree, or a pick every time you want to mine ore. This cost is amplified through the actual crafting process, as each item also has a cost to craft it after materials are collected.

Pets Made of Paper

Players who love pets and card collections will be satisfied with Wind Slayer 2’s pet system. Monsters have a rare chance to drop cards, which can be collected or traded with others. Using these cards will summon the monster as an ally. Currently, there are 100 monster cards that can be gathered from around the world, although making a full collection will require a lot of grinding.

Student Becomes Master

The game features a mentoring system which allows higher level players to group with lower level players to battle together. This gives the lower level character a lot of extra experience, making it the fastest way to level: for instance, the high level character can take their apprentice into a high level dungeon, and let them benefit from the increased experience. In return, the high level player gains a bit of bonus experience themselves, and can unlock new abilities.

Wind Slayer 2 has also snuck in a little PvP. There are five versus five PvP arenas, where the last team standing gains the victory. These arenas include Capture the Flag, Team Fight, and Death Match modes. Victory can gain players dozens of ranks.

Final Verdict: Fair

Wind Slayer 2 stands in need of more than just polishing. The game is certainly bright and colorful, but many technical details get in the way of making the game enjoyable. Poor controls, unclear quest objectives, and simplistic gameplay all need to be addressed. Meanwhile, there has been little change from the original game version. Fans of 2D MMOs, including the original Wind Slayer, may want to take a look into the game, but don’t expect much innovation.
