Tank Ace is a match-based, tank warfare MMORPG by Games Campus.  It boasts multiple game modes, deep customization, and fast-paced, run-and-gun gameplay!  Fans of PVP and lobby-based games will enjoy Tank Ace, though the game does have single-player challenges and PVE encounters.  There is a great deal of depth in customization with Tank Ace, so casual players may be turned off by this.

Tank Ace Overview

At the time of this review, players are able to choose from a variety of tanks and specializations – the stats system in Tank Ace goes deep, and in addition to being able to craft equipment and ammunition, players also customize the skills of their commander and the crew of their tank.  The game also has multiple match styles, listed below:

Annihilation – Team-based deathmatch.  The goal of annihiliation is to coordinate with your allies to kill as many enemy tanks as possible.  Once the timer ends, the team with the highest score wins.

Occupational War – A king of the hill mode with multiple hills.  There are three ways to finish the game in this mode; reduce enemy tickets to zero, destroy the enemy HQ and hold it for five minutes, or hold all enemy bases at the same time.

Missions – PVE missions can be completed solo, or with up to four friends.  The objectives can range from anything to simply destroying all enemy forces, escorting friendly NPCs, or defending a point on the map from attack.

Tank Ace Review

By B. Olivia

Where to begin!  Tank Ace is a pretty fun game, and despite this review having been of the beta, it’s already looking plenty polished and ready to go.  The game takes place in a quirky, alternate-history World War 2 that was fought entirely by infinitely respawning tanks, piloted by anime-looking upstarts who have tank commander aspirations.  The whole point of the game is to basically just stampede around in your own custom-built tank and shoot things – preferably other players.  Though the game offers a PVE mode, it’s not much to write home about, and the real action is in the PVP matches.

So, it’s all fairly straightforward.  Log in, customize tank, go into lobby, get into game, shoot tanks with tank gun.  Or is it?!

Let me tell you a story…

Yes, Tank Ace apparently wants to tell you a story.  In the beginning of the game, through a series of cutscenes, it tells the story of a young boy (or girl, as character creation leads us to believe) whose village was trampled over by tanks.  Powerless, this boy is, to stop these tanks, for he is the citizen of a sad little country locked between the struggles of two military superpowers!  The story is a tragic one, and compellingly told through broken English and dramatic declarations.  We are, of course, this young person, and we have vowed to do what anyone would do in this situation:

Become the BEST TANK COMMANDER EVAR!

And so begins our quest.  Our quest to become the TANK ACE.  Dun dun dun.

I mean, what?  It’s cute, sure, the way this game tries so hard to make the world come alive (sort of?), but between the silly translations (with your stoic, grey haired general saying things like “Byye~!) and the cartoonish drawings, I really have NO idea whether Tank Ace is just badly translated and trying to take itself somewhat seriously, or if this is all just one big joke.

It’s a match-based game in which we run around blowing up eachother’s tanks, people.  We don’t need much pretense to enjoy it.  Why do I have an avatar?  Wait, what are all these skills?  Oh my god, who opened all these windows?!

TOO MANY NUMBERS, ZOMG.

See, some people think head-crushing depth is somehow a good thing in a game.  While the nerdy 14 year-old in me with nothing better to do agrees, the present-day, got-things-to-do 27 year-old me likes things streamlined and without clutter.  Tank Ace certainly has depth.  Not only can you customize your crew with various NPCs (the driver, gunner, etc.), you can also customize their skills, and even the various leadership skills of your commander (that’s your avatar).

Then, you can pick a tank model and trick it out, yo.  You can pretty much customize your tank down to the screws, tweaking numbers, min-maxing, loading in ammo that does five-percent extra damage at a certain yard-range in a specific kind of weather on tuesdays… I was astonished I couldn’t put spinners on the treads and install neon lights.

Oh, and if that isn’t enough for you, you can craft items and materials.  You can trade with players to do this.  Salvaging the wreckage of destroyed players in PVP allows you to get mats for crafting and blah blah blah… too much.  Seriously.  Tank Ace, I just want to shoot things.  Can I please just shoot things?  Let me just navigate these menus and this clunky “home base” area in a desperate attempt to figure out where I go to shoot things…

PVE?  More like pee-vee… lame.

I don’t even know why they have the PVE missions in this game.  They’re boring.  I just drove around trying to run over little soldiers, praying that they didn’t have rocket launchers, and squealing in fear when they did.  I’d spray machine gun fire with my awkward, slow-moving turret in a desperate attempt to kill the little khaki, rocket-gunning blobs before they shredded off half my health.  This tedium was punctuated by brief stops at piles of jagged shrapnel to rummage through them and get garbage I couldn’t figure out what to do with.

Man.  Our grandparents must have been SO bored during World War 2.  Oh wait, I guess theirs was a more PVP-focused experience.  Truly, I need to check out the PVP in Tank Ace to get the full experience of the game.

PVP?  More like… why isn’t this the entire game?

Okay, the PVP is fun.  I mean, who doesn’t enjoy raging around a desert with nitro-boost tanks firing shells at eachother?  The gameplay is pretty standard-fare.  You stay mobile while leading targets and blowing them up with yer gunz.  I liked that the maps had weather effects (like visibility-reducing sandstorms), and I liked that players were a hell of a lot more interesting to go after than NPCs.  There were, unfortunately, a few problems I had with the core mechanics.

For starters, the trajectory physics for the fired shells seems off.  You fire your cannon, and the shot goes straight ahead like a laser without falling for a quite some time, before seemingly remembering gravity and then plummeting to the ground at rapid speed.  It’s bizarre and baffling and kind of hard to compensate for.  I’ve never fired a gun from a tank, but I’m used to these kinds of trajectory mechanics in games with bows and grenades, and the physics in Tank Ace just seem kind of… off.  Who knows, I could be wrong.  But I still didn’t like it.

Final Verdict: Fair

Tank Ace isn’t bad or anything.  It’s just kind of a basic game.  There are some UI issues, weird physics, and frankly, too much depth for its own good.  If the experience were tightened up, it’d be loads better, but for now, it plays only half as well as it could.  Hopefully the game gets a good once-over before official release.
