Return of Warrior Review
By, Ange Perdu
Return of Warrior (ROW) is a fantasy action MMORPG based off of the original Risk Your Life (RYL) game. Set in a warring world of Humans and Ak’Kans players must battle for territorial rule. Invading base camps, completing missions, killing monsters, challenging other warriors in duels, and fighting in battles are crucial for winning the war.
Monster Grinding in Death Valley, the Gameplay
In Return of Warrior players enter a dark somewhat desolated land plagued with multiple creatures. Unlike other massively multiplayer online role-playing games the quests are limited. Most of them consist of mundane tasks such as passing messages between NPC’s, locating items, and killing an allotted amount of beasts. Missions also vary with race. The streamlined combat system and PvP action is what really makes this game interesting. Unfortunately, there is a lot of monster grinding required to level up in order to participate in full fledged battles. While fighting Ichman Shamans, ruthless boars, Ponpons, Sikles, and large Bulte crabs spirit-stirring medieval music pump in the background adding to the rugged ambiance.
The graphics in the game could be better. It’s somewhat buggy when trekking over endless terrain and broken down buildings. A massive teleport in the center of the main hub transports warriors after they die. This same portal can be used to maneuver to different locations on the map making travel for quests easier if the player is in possession of a teleport scroll.
As players advance in the game killing monsters they’ll face challenging boss creatures. All of the combat is in real time. The auto attack is extremely fast and allows a player to simultaneously initiate effective combative skills or cast spells for a glorious victory. Defeating gruesome beasts earn various items or sacks of gold which can be used to purchase valuable equipment at merchant stores.
In ROW grinding and missions can get quite repetitive. Joining a party or slaying with a guild is best. It’s also the simplest method to leveling quickly in order to participate in war. Players are only allowed to form parties with members of their own nation. The Guild Master holds a large amount of responsibility controlling the fate of their members.
The PvP duels are also entertaining. At any time another player can challenge you to a duel by sending an invite. Accepting will start an instant face-off. In Return of Warrior there are Statue Wars where players can battle for honor. Similar to capture the flag each team must try to destroy the other’s statue hidden in the battle ground area. For each minute it’s captured a special medal is earned.
Another cool feature in the game is the ability to set up base camp for your guild. They serve as the main headquarters. The Blacksmith’s Suggestion Quest is required before building a guild fortress. Members earn fame points for defending the fortress during war. Every guild fortress possesses HP. When its limit of damage has been inflicted the fortress will tumble. Wars take place every Sunday and last 2 hours. There’s also an option to use the fortress as a guild store or mining machine for metal to help forge weaponry. Magical rings and necklaces along with certain equipment are upgradeable as well.
The Night of the Iguana – Hero Joyriding & Customization
The customization in ROW is one of the features that really stand out. Through special armor, weapons, and accessories players can create a distinct character of their own. The customization not only improves the character’s attributes but it alters their entire appearance. Items can be traded with other players or purchased using in-game gold at any Merchant Store. Customize your warrior with a unique look. Add skull masks, spiked helmets, unusual armor, and even a top hat. There are a lot of different options available. Once a player reaches level 30 and up they can buy a tiger or gigantic iguana for transportation. Plain horses aren’t allowed in this far out world.
The Black Market Advantage
There is also a Black Market that sells high-powered arsenal. Despite the fact that they cost thousands worth of gold these arms can provide a significant advantage over other players during combat. Players can invest in an Opal Cuirass Body Armor, Destruction Sword Blade, Rueful Sword, Crawling Hammer, Cockatrice Scythe, or the Blood-soaked Dirktop Knife Arm to aid in battle. For more than arsenal the local general store merchant sells hearty chunky soup, bread, Alchemist water, plain manna, carrot manna, along with other varieties to heal physical damage. Damaged equipment or weapons can be fixed or upgraded for a small fee of gold by merchants. For more specialty items the Mall is required. You won’t find an abundance of weapons at the Return of Warrior Premium Item-Mall. It only has a variety of acceleration gift boxes which provide double XP rate increases, potions to heal and boost mana, orbs, skill books, stones, and permits to alter equipment or character stats.
Final Verdict: Good
Although the graphics lack in Return of Warrior it still has a lot of potential for fun. Gamers who enjoy PvP action will like the swift combat system and multiple options players have access to. Whether it’s slaughtering monsters across the barren desert, starting a duel with a worthy opponent, pillaging fortresses, or battling in a Guild War there’s a certain level of excitement to ROW that makes it worth playing. The head-to-toe character customization adds to the overall appeal of the game too. Fans of the original version Risk Your Life will be pleased with this up-dated tribute.
