Red Stone Overview

Red Stone is a unique 2D Fantasy MMORPG by L&K Logic, and now published by OGPlanet. Red Stone looks a lot like the classic RPG Diablo with lower quality graphics.  The game’s most notable features are its large selection of playable classes and skills. Each of the game’s eight playable characters are composed of two different classes which players can switch back and forth from at will. This feature alone adds an incredible amount of variation to the game, which is a welcome change in an industry that largely isn’t known for creativity. Unfortunately, the Red Stone’s dull gameplay and obvious glitches really hurt the game’s prospects. The game’s playable classes are:

Squire / Warrior – The Squire/Warrior  is the primary melee fighting class in Red Stone. They are capable of dealing a fair amount of damage in melee range and also have powerful defensive capabilities.

Magic Archer / Magic Lancer – This character has both powerful ranged and melee attacks. Their hp however is less than that of the Squire/Warrior class.

Tamer / Summoner – This class relies on a ‘pet’ to aid them during combat. The character’s stats effect both themselves and their pets.

Thief / Monk -This class is proficient at dealing a large amount of damage quickly within melee range, but they tend to have lower hit points than the other melee classes in Red Stone.

Priest / Fallen Angel - The Priest/Fallen Angel is the primary supportive spell casting character in Red Stone. They are incredibly helpful in groups, but are vulnerable when they’re alone.

Magician / Werewolf - This class uses powerful magic attacks as a Magician and intense melee attacks as a werewolf. An interesting combination of classes.

Princess / Little Witch -The Princess/Little Witch has both ranged attacks like an archer and powerful offensive spells like the Magician.

Necromancer/ Demon – This class relies on dark magic to defeat their enemies. They have powerful debuffs. They tend to have low hit points and are vulnerable in melee combat.

Red Stone Review

By Omer Altay

Red Stone is a rather under the radar 2D Fantasy MMORPG by L&K Logic. The game used to be published by GamersFirst, but was recently shut down. Luckily, the game’s developer L&K Logic took over the North American service for the game. The game entered open beta back in August 2007, but ever since the game launched it never really caught on. Red Stone is perhaps the least popular game on the Gamer’s First Network, but at least it adds a bit of variety to the types of games available on Gamer’s First, as it’s one of the only 2D games they have. If you’re on a low-end machine and looking for a game to play Red Stone is worth checking out, but how does it stack up against other MMORPGs? Well, read on to find out!

Character Creation
Upon downloading and installing Red Stone, I was quickly impressed by the game as soon as I landed on the character creation screen. Don’t get your hopes up about character customization, though, as the game doesn’t have any, but what got me excited about Red Stone was its large selection of playable classes. On the character creation screen players can select any one of twelve classes, but in reality the game has sixteen total classes as for some odd reason the character creation menu excludes the four classes that the Priest, Magician, Princess and Necromancer can transform into.  This is odd, as all of the other character transformation possibilities are listed on the character creation screen.

Class Transformation
One of my favorite aspects of Red Stone is the game’s character transformation feature. Every class in the game has the ability to transform into another class for a limited period of time, which adds a great deal of variation and tactics into the game. As players earn skill points by leveling up, they have to choose carefully when choosing skills to improve, as neglecting a secondary class is a surefire way to create an under performing character. Having a good balance of skills between both of a character’s classes can be extremely useful in PvP. Unfortunately, the only PvP in Red Stone is large scale guild battles, so if you’re not a part of a guild, you won’t be able to participate in any form of PvP.

Gameplay Mechanics
Gameplay mechanics in Red Stone are simple. Players fight enemies to earn experience points, and each level rewards players with four stat points that can be distributed in any of the seven attributes; Power, Alacrity, Health, Luck, Knowledge, Wisdom and Charisma. Red Stone’s gameplay mechanics get interesting upon analyzing the games ‘Charge Point’, or ‘CP’, system. In order to use skills or transform into a secondary class, players need to accumulate CP points. They’re basically the game’s ‘mana’, which starts empty and has to be filled by fighting. It actually works just like the ‘rage’ system in World of Warcraft and Runes of Magic, where players have to actively fight enemies to fill up their rage (in this case ‘CP’). Player levels and skills level-up individually in Red Stone as well, so players should keep an eye on both their ‘XP meter’ and their ‘skill meter’. One complaint I have with Red Stone’s gameplay mechanics are that they aren’t as smooth as they should be. Simply moving around and attacking feels difficult and clumsy at times, which takes a lot away from the enjoyment of the game. I certainly would have enjoyed Red Stone more if the game was a bit more fluid.

Oh the Graphics
Okay seriously, the official Red Stone website is deceptive. When I first landed on it to download the game I thought to myself, “Hmm, this looks pretty good” because the site had some nice game art and a cute anime chick. Neither the homepage or download area had any gameplay screenshots, so upon entering the game the first thing that I noticed was the game’s absolutely terrible graphics. Red Stone is a 2D MMORPG that vaguely resembles classics like Diablo and Baldur’s Gate, but my problem with the game’s graphics is that they’re incredibly jagged and blurry. You’d imagine a game that was released in mid 2007 like Red Stone would have some decently polished 2D Graphics, but apparently not. Don’t get me wrong, I actually love 2D Graphics in general, especially in MMORPGs. 2D games just feel more original these days than 3D ones, as there are simply far too many generic 3D games out there. One graphical issue with the game that can get a bit annoying is that enemies are at times impossible to attack because they got stuck in a wall or inside of a corner.

Hotkey Bar Sucks…
One extremely ‘annoying’ aspect of Red Stone is the game’s hotkey bar for consumable items. For some reason, the developers decided that it would be a good idea to limit players to place only two stackable healing items for each of the five hotkey slots. How on earth they decided that this was a good idea is beyond me, as all this does is force players to constantly restock their hotkey slots with additional healing items every few minutes. This may seem like a small issue, but after playing Red Stone for a good four hours, this issue drove me nuts, as I the class I played in the game was heavily reliant on healing items.

Final Verdict – Fair
There are far too many great free MMORPGs out there today for me to recommend Red Stone. With its sixteen total classes the game has a lot of variation, but unfortunately the game is grind intensive and incredibly slow-paced. It also has little to offer in terms of PvP and end game content. If you already registered for Red Stone, you use that same account to play other good Gamers First titles like Sword of the New World and War Rock, so it’s not all a waste, though the game isn’t published by GamersFirst anymore, but rather its Korean developer L&K Logic.
