Land of Chaos Online Overview
What do you get when you mix League of Legends with Savage 2? Land of Chaos Online! With solid W,A,S,D controls and a large variety of characters to play, LOCO offers a unique gameplay experience. Players will be able to upgrade their armor and weapons, and unlock access to additional characters. Take up to three heroes with you into each battle and swap between them while waiting to respawn. Each hero has 10 skills, but only five can be taken to the field at once. Land of Chaos Online has two game modes. The first resembles Aeon of Strife games like DotA and Heroes of Newerth where two sides must push past a series of towers and make their way to the enemy base to destroy the primary structure there. The other mode supports more players, and has no NPCs or towers. Instead, players simply battle it out in an arena style map while gainining levels every minute or so.

Land of Chaos Online Review

Land of Chaos Online, LOCO for short, is a unique 3D fantasy MMO published by Alaplaya that plays like a mix between Savage 2 and League of Legends. Weird combination, I know. The thing is Land of Chaos Online is an Aeon of Strife (think DotA) game, except with a twist – Players control every action their characters make with solid WSAD controls, as the game is much more action oriented than other DotA like games.
Upon first logging into Land of Chaos Online, players must chose from one of 12 starting heroes. No worries though, additional heroes can be unlocked and played by using “hero cards”, are essentially character slots. Players begin with 3 permanent hero cards and several temporary ones. After creating your character, you’ll immediately begin the game’s tutorial. I strongly recommend players complete the game’s tutorial, as Land of Chaos Online is not that straight forward. If you haven’t played any other aeon of strife games before, it’s easy to get lost. Outside of actual games, players can shop around for new “persistent” equipment, which affects their hero’s in every single game. Each hero in the game has their own equipment, so spend your money towards optimally gearing out one hero at a time. When you’re ready to actually start a game, simply click on “Quick Join” at the top left of the lobby area or click on “Manual Join” if you want to select a game through a lobby type interface.
Those familiar with the aeon of strife genre or those who have played either League of Legends or Avalon Heroes before should have a bit of an edge over those who haven’t. The actual combat mechanics in Land of Chaos Online are very similar to that of Savage 2, but progression is much like League of Legends. Players start out at the beginning of each new round at level 1, and gain experience by killing enemy heroes or NPCs. The two game modes in Land of Chaos Online are Battlefield and Annihilation with Battlefield being the more popular one. In Battlefield game mode, two sides face off, each with up to 5 players on each team. The goal of each team is to destroy the opposing team’s base. NPC controlled minions spawn regularly to attack the enemy base too, so try to stick with them when taking on towers (defensive structures) and trying to farm experience. This mode plays a lot like traditional aeon of strife games.
Annihilation mode supports up to 16 players (8v8) and involves more chaotic “arena” style gameplay. Whichever team reaches a pre-set amount of kills first wins. In this mode, players level up automatically as time goes on and all players on the map are the exact same level, so the game is always “balanced”. Even though the game is a bit more chaotic, it still takes a lot of strategy and team work to win. In both Battlefield and Annihilation modes, players are given the option at the start to chose “Beginner” or “Expert” mode. Selecting beginner mode means the game will automatically distribute your skill points and purchase items. Expert mode allows you to distribute your own skill points and buy your own items.
Heroes, Skills and Variety
One of Land of Chaos Online’s strongest aspects is its variety. Each of the game’s 12+ playable heroes have 8 regular skills and 2 ultimate skills for a total of 10 skills. In comparison, in every other aeon of strife game (Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends, Avalon Heroes, etc) each hero only has 4 total skills. Even though these other games have many more playable heroes than Land of Chaos Online, LOCO still wins hands down in variety. I’ve played DotA for years and am a big fan of League of Legends, but after playing Land of Chaos Online, I’ve fallen in love with its skill system. What makes it so awesome is that players can never “max out” every skill in a game because heroes only gain 1 skill point per level and max out at level X. Each of the game’s 10 skills have anywhere from three to five levels to them, so maxing out even one skill can take up to 5 skill points. The fact that Land of Chaos Online has so many skills and so few skills points, means that players have countless different ways to play the same exact hero.
Another interesting aspect of LOCO’s skill system is that even though each hero has two ultimate skills, only one can be trained. This adds to the game’s variety and the need for players to “adjust” their regular “build” depending on which enemy heroes they’re facing off against. Unfortunately, heroes have many of their skills locked, meaning players can’t even learn them right away. Players need to use “Skill Scrolls”, which can be obtained by completing missions on the mission board, to permanently unlock some of their character’s skills. On Randy Rozz, a hero, for example, the Sniper, Recovery Shot, Chain Trouble, Gun Grenade and Sharp Shooter skills begin locked and must be unlocked through skill scrolls before usage. Having to unlock every skill on your favorite character gives players a reason to keep playing, but it’s also a bit annoying.
In comparison to other aeon of strife games like DotA and League of Legends, the skill system in Land of Chaos Online is brilliant. I’ve played DotA for years and the fact that every hero ends up with the same exact skills end game “works”. It’s the same way in League of Legends. There’s nothing wrong with that particular setup, but I like the variety that the skill system in Land of Chaos Online offers more. Unfortunately though, with so much variety comes imbalances. The game isn’t exactly imbalnced, but with so many skills and possible builds, some skills just prove to be worthless, while others are “must haves” on any build. Another little complaint I have is that I’d like to see more playable heroes in Land of Chaos Online. DotA has 65+ playable heroes and League of Legends has 40+. Land of Chaos Online only has a long way to go to catch up.
The item system in Land of Chaos Online is much like the item systems in similar games. Players are awarded gold for every enemy minion and hero they kill, which can be used to purchase items in the game’s store which can increase stats, damage and even provide skill-like abilities. Players can also gain gold by killing “neutral” minions on the map. Much like the item system in just about every other aeon of strife dota-like game, certain items can be combined to form more powerful items. The one complaint I have with the item system in Land of Chaos Online is its interface. Buying new items just feels clumsy because the store interface is poorly designed. Though with time, you should be able to memorize where everything is and get used to it. At the end of each game, players on the winning side get to bid on new “persistent” equipment. As I mentioned earlier, these items can be “equipped” onto heroes outside of the actual game for permanent stat bonuses.
Other little Details
Land of Chaos Online is actually a surprisingly fun game. There are a few little details that can take away from the fun though. Since games can take upwards of 30+ minutes, sometimes much longer, games can easily get unbalanced if a player leaves. Luckily, the game penalizes players for leaving a game in progress, so it discourages players from leaving or rage quitting. The game’s ranking system works quite well. As you win games, your rank increases. The game’s quick find feature automatically places you in games with players of equal skill level. Controls wise, Land of Chaos Online could use a bit more polish, but that’s a small issue.
Final Verdict – Great
Land of Chaos Online is a truly unique and fun MMO experience that’s well worth the download. The game’s in depth skill system and action oriented gameplay distinguish it from the competition. It’s easy to learn the basics in LOCO, but the game is difficult to master.
