Karma Online Overview

Karma Online is a unique 3D MMOFPS game published by ijji. Unlike most MMOFPS games today – Karma is not set in modern times and is not a ‘tactical’ shooter. The game is set during a fictional timeline where World War 2 did not end in 1945 and has instead extended well into the 1950s where Germany has already conquered the entire European continent. The only foe left to defeat is the Soviet Union. Choose a side and fight for your country! The gameplay wise Karma Online is a bit like Battlefield Heroes, as players gain skill points as they level up and can use these to learn skills.

Sniper - Snipers are deadly from far away and can usually kill their opponents in a single well aimed shot. In close quarters combat though – their primary weapon is practically useless making them extremely vulnerable.

Assault - They are the primary ‘front line’ soldier – they are quick and deadly and are most effective from a medium range.

Heavy Weapons Specialist - The ‘heavy weapons specialist’ as the name suggests – specializes in using extremely powerful and destructive weapons like the RPG and a close quarters SMG.

Support – The support class is exactly as its named – a supportive class. They won’t last long toe-to-toe with an assault and cannot defeat a sniper from a distance but they have a variety of useful tools at their disposal – most notably mortars.

Karma Online Review

Axis versus Allies… versus zombies? Joymax’s latest MMOFPS, Karma Online similar to Battlefield Online or Blackshot - offers a unique historical fiction in which you take the role of a soldier during the World War II era.  The game promises several game modes, as well as connection optimization to reduce latency issues.

Getting into the Fray

Karma Online does not have a traditional character creation system. You begin with two available characters: one for the Axis forces, and one for the Allies. There’s a fairly simple tutorial that you can skip, but it does offer fairly substantial rewards.  The tutorial covers basic FPS skills such as movement, firing, grenades, melee, and support skills (such as airstrikes and reconnaissance). Controls are typical: WASD for character movement, mouse for aiming and shooting, and hot keys for melee and grenades.

A lobby system is at the heart of game selection in Karma Online. Games are color-coded: gray indicates a game is currently full, but white indicates an open game.  Most game types require a minimum number of players for it to begin; typically four players are required. The lobby also offers a “quick join” option to put you in one of the currently available games.

Let Me Count the Ways

Karma Online boasts nine different game modes, each of which has anywhere from one to ten different maps.  Team Deathmatch is the standard team-versus-team gameplay that dominates the MMOFPS genre.  The game also offers Demolition Run, where one team seeks to destroy a target, and the other seeks to prevent its destruction.  Free-For-All pits everyone against each other in a frantic deathmatch.  Steal is a capture style mode, where one team attempts to retrieve a stolen document and return it to base, while the other team tries to stop them. Domination is similar to capture-the-flag, but instead of gaining points for returning the flag, you gain points for holding it as long as you can.

There are also a few modes that offer a slight twist to the genre.  First, there is Berserker mode: regular characters face off against player-controlled berserkers, which can only melee, but are very powerful and difficult to take down. Prisoner is a second unique game mode, where every player killed in battle becomes the prisoner of their killer, until their killer is slain. Finally, there is Infection Survival, which pits both factions against zombie soldier hordes.  There is no PvP in the Infection Survival mode; zombies offer different point values, and the first team to reach the required number of points is the victor.

Wait, I Remember You

As you complete games (win or lose), you get experience and Karma Points. Karma Points are used to purchase characters and equipment in the shop, which become unlocked as you level up. Each character has a different set of skills at their disposal, which can be upgraded through skill points: some characters excel with rifles, others with machine guns or sniper rifles.  Most skills consist of accuracy bonuses or recoil reduction; however, other skills will show players the location of enemies who have killed a squad member, or call down devastating airstrikes on the opposition.  This allows a moderate degree of character customization, an important factor, considering each side currently only has six available characters.

Gearing Up

Most equipment has to be purchased, either through in-game currency or Joymax Silk.  Weapons are classed into three types: primary, secondary, and thrown.  Primary weapons are automatic and semi-automatic rifles, sniper rifles, support machine guns, and heavy weapons such as rocket launchers.  Secondary weapons consist of knives, handguns, and shotguns.  Thrown weapons include grenades and painkillers.

There is also additional equipment to purchase, such as canteens, helmets, uniforms (including gloves and boots), which offer defensive and speed boosts for your character. There are also dog tags, which prevent you from committing friendly-fire – which can be incredibly important in close quarters maps.

Final Verdict: Good

Karma Online has many distinctive features.  Gameplay is smooth, even on lower connections.  Games themselves are quick, fun, and accessible even for new players.  Skill plays a major factor, rather than equipment or character selection.  The game, however, suffers significantly from a low population.  It is common to find about five or six games going during prime time hours, which are often full.  While you can create your own game, many times you can (and will) sit for hours on end waiting for enough players to join.  With the variety of modes available, players can find something that fits their playstyle.
