Hero:108 Online Review

Hero:108 Online is an action MMORPG based on the animated series Hero:108 that plays on Cartoon Network. The game is loosely based on the classic Chinese novel ‘The Water Margin Stories’ and centers on the ongoing conflict between animals and humans. While the game is developed by the Asian studio Gamania, it has a distinct art style which fans of the series should recognize. Indeed many of the characters, locations, and quest concepts in Hero:108 Online are pulled from the TV show.
Installers and Launchers
While the Hero:108 Online client size is a very modest 765 mb, the publishers have put several unnecessary obstacles in our path before we can actually get around to playing the game. Players will need to install a browser plugin, sign up for a beanfun account then create a Hero:108 Online account to attach to their new beanfun account. The game is launched from the website, but players must input a captcha code each time. Hero:108 Online is the first free to play game on the new Beanfun portal, but it is definitely designed to handle multiple games so look for more games from them soon.
Hero:108 Online was first announced in early 2010 and hit open beta on June 26, 2010. The game has a unique art style, and the graphic quality is more than enough to get the job done. There are plenty of resolution options to chose from, but the game lacks any display settings beyond that. While the simple graphics fit the genre well, the lack of character customization is harder to overlook. There are eight characters to chose from during character creation, each representing a different class and playstyle. Linear character progression and the lack of any customization during the early levels is discouraging, but eight playable characters is still a fair selection. The character designs themselves are varied enough and include such humorous fellows as Mr. No Hands, the healer. For a more complete description of all the characters, check out our overview tab.
Hero of Big Green
A short cinematic introduces players to the story behind Hero:108, an evil man named High Roller has convinced many animals to turn against humans. It falls on a group called Big Green to protect humanity and their friendly animal allies. An optional tutorial is available immediately after character creation which explains the game’s controls and interface. Hero:108 Online supports keyboard, mouse, and even gamepad controls. All keys can be changed manually, but the default layout works well enough. W,A,S,D control movement, the spacebar jumps, ‘j’ attacks, ‘k’ uses the selected skill, ‘l’ dashes, and ‘u’ scrolls through the hotkey bar. Alternatively, players can use the number keys to use the skill or item placed on the hotkey bar. The inventory, quest, and equipment menus should be familiar to anyone with prior MMORPG experience. While there are six base stats and other attributes, they increase automatically as players level up. Various equipment can also increase attributes and other stats.
Instance vs Persistence
As with most recent MMORPGs, the best way to progress through Hero:108 Online is by completing quests. The first of these quests is acquired in the starting town called Hero City (District A.) It asks players to enter an instance by using a nearby teleporter. Gameplay is split between timed instances and questing in the persistent world. While players are free to team up at any time, more often than not the only time players will bother to associate with one another is when looking to complete instances. Most of the regular kill quests are easily doable solo, but many of the higher level instances take at least 2-4 players to complete. Combat is fast paced throughout the game, players will take on large groups of enemies at once and then move on to another group. Maps are small which makes travel easy and reduces down time. Almost all attacks have a large area of effect which means players can hit 3+ enemies at once.
Degrees of Freedom
While Hero108: Online is an original game, it does bear some resemblance to another action MMORPG released at around the same time, Fists of Fu. Both games have cartoony graphics, instanced missions, and other similarities. But what sets Hero 108 apart from Fists of Fu and other similar titles like Dragonica Online is its fully 3D environments. Players can move in all directions and jump from platforms of one height to another. The fast experience rate and beginner item packages which can be opened at levels 1, 5, 10, and 15 help the game’s pacing. There are bosses at the end of each instance, and many of the 28 maps that are currently available have one or more instances available within them. There are three towns, or more accurately three districts of Hero City. Within this city are equipment and skill NPCs for each of the eight roles. Each level, players quality for additional skills but must manually go back to town, purchase the skill scroll, and then right click to learn it. This slows down pacing a bit, but serves as the only excuse to actually go back to town.
Heroes and Villains
Hero:108 Online marks the second MMORPG release related to Cartoon Network with the first being FusionFall. The two games are very different, but both have high production value. Hero 108 starts as a very solo oriented game for the first 20 or so levels but begins to reward cooperation after that. Starting at level 20, players can use the Arena located in town to fight one another. While a mount is provided in one of the beginner item packs, mounts that actually increase movement speed can only be obtained via raid bosses which require teams to take on. Players can organize into guilds that rank up. Towns and NPCs don’t play a major role in Hero108: Online, but the game is strong on gameplay, it gets right to the action. Another major selling point are the interesting environments. Players will be battling rabbits disguised in giant carrot suits, riding turtle tanks, and acquiring new equipment on the way. There is nothing for sale in the item mall (officially known as the Gash Shop) yet, but expect it to be filled with experience boosts, clothes, and other items as the game approaches commercial release in the months ahead.
Final Verdict: Great
Whether you’re a fan of the cartoon show or not, Hero:108 Online is a fun MMORPG that’s well worth checking out. The mix of instanced and persistent world gameplay help keep things interesting while a steady stream of quests provide direction.
