UPDATE: This game has been shutdown and is no longer available

Dungeon Runners is an innovative 3D fantasy, action MMORPG. The game draws a lot of its inspiration from the classical action RPGs Diablo and Nox. The game was designed with humor in mind, as much of the game’s dialogue parodies MMORPG cliches. Dungeon Runners was originally released as a strictly pay-to-play game but has recently opted to become free-to-play.

Dungeon Runners Overview

Dungeon Runners is an innovative, 3D action MMORPG by NcSoft.  If you’ve ever played any of the old-school classic action RPGs, you should feel right at home with Dungeon Runners.  The game was designed with humor in mind, and all of the game’s dialogue, quests, item descriptions and themes are parodies of MMORPG and RPG cliches.  The only other game that has the same type of humor as Dungeon Runners is the browser game Kingdom of Loathing. The game originally launched as an entirely pay-to-play game but has since opened its doors to free players. The game’s biggest downside is that a lot of features are only available to paying customers.  The game’s three playable classes are:

Warrior – Warriors are the traditional ‘tank’ class in Dungeon Runners. They have the most hit points, armor and defense but lack the offensive capabilities of the other classes in the game. They’re proficient at using all melee weapons but are clumsy with ranged attacks and magic. Warriors start with a natural bonus to their ‘Strength’ and ‘Agility’ attributes and a penalty on their ‘Endurance’ and ‘Intellect’ stats.

Mage – Mages are the traditional offensive spellcasting class in Dungeon Runners.  They are capable of dealing large amounts of damage from a distance with their powerful spells, but they are extremely vulnerable in melee range.  Mages receive a natural bonus to the ‘Intellect’ and ‘Endurance’ attributes, but a penalty to their ‘Strength’ and ‘Agility’ attributes.

Ranger  - Rangers are proficient with all sorts of ranged weapons, from crossbows to guns.  They can deal large amounts of damage quickly, but are fairly vulnerable in melee combat.  They start with a bonus to their ‘Agility’ and ‘Endurance’ attributes, but a penalty to their ‘Strength’ and ‘Intellect’ attributes.

Dungeon Runners Review

By Omer Altay
Dungeon Runners is a 3D fantasy, action MMORPG by NCSoft, the company behind Lineage, Guildwars and Exteel. The company isn’t too well known in the free MMORPG business, as nearly all of their titles are or were at one point pay-to-play.  Dungeon Runners actually entered the MMORPG scene as a traditional pay-to-play game in May, 2007.  When NCSoft realized that their title just couldn’t compete with the pay-to-play MMORPG heavyweight World of Warcraft, it was announced that Dungeon Runners would have a free-to-play component.  To clear things up, Dungeon Runners never intended to compete with World of Warcraft, as it was more of a casual play “a bit here and there” sort of game.  The game’s most unique and certainly most interesting aspect is its humor.  The game pokes fun at many MMORPG and gaming clichés with its witty quest dialogue and skill descriptions. Unfortunately, underneath all the humor is a rather dull game.

First Impressions
The first thing I noticed in Dungeon Runners was that the game’s character creation system is rather lousy.  The game only has one race (human) and only three playable classes: Warrior, Mage and Archer.  Character customization options are limited to hairstyle and face only.  The fact that the game has limited character customization isn’t a surprise, as most free MMORPGs neglect this feature.  Upon entering the world of Dungeon Runners and getting a quick feel for the game’s graphics and interface, the first thing that popped into my mind was “More WoW graphics”.  The graphics in Dungeon Runners was certainly inspired by World of Warcraft, as everything from the game’s interface to environments looks similar.  There are now almost a dozen or so free MMORPGs that copy the graphical style of WoW.  Dungeon Runner’s graphics are nowhere near as similar to Warcraft as games like Runes of Magic and 4Story are, but either way, I’m tired of playing games that look like WoW because I’ve already played that game to death and prefer not the reminded of it when I’m playing an entirely different game.  Upon actually walking around and talking to a few npcs, I quickly discovered Dungeon Runner’s most interesting feature – great humor.

LOL
Much of all the text in Dungeon Runners was designed to poke fun at general gaming and MMORPG clichés.  For example, one of the weapons I picked up on my Mage had an attack speed of ‘Freakn’ fast’ and another piece of armor I had was named ‘Baby seal skin pauldrons’.  There’s nothing quite like wearing armor that’s made out of cute baby seals!  My favorite is the description for one of my mage’s starting skills called ‘Bookworm’.  It reads, “You have spent most of your life in libraries reading on subjects ranging from thermodynamic entropy to increasing profitability for broccoli farmers below the Tropic of Unicorn – all this knowledge gives you additional mana points per point of intellect as well as more intellect overall“.  Another part of the game that I chuckled at was when I clicked on an NPC which said, with voice acting, “you’re ugly, if you come back here, I’ll cut you!’.  Dungeon Runners is just filled with quirky dialogue and witty item names and skills, so if you’re looking for a light hearted comedic game, then Dungeon Runners is certainly worth checking out.

Underneath all the Lols
Unfortunately, underneath the game’s humor there is only a subpar World of Warcraft look-alike with little to do.  The game’s dungeon designs feel cheap and repetitive, and there are only three playable classes.  All of the game’s maps are ‘instanced’, similar to system that Guild Wars employs, which makes the game’s world outside of town feel empty.  The game’s most attractive gameplay component is its fast-paced combat system that functions a lot like the combat in other old school action RPGs like Diablo 2 and Nox.  Players can move with either the WSAD keys or by using the mouse in point and click.  Dungeon Runners does have some PvP components, but in order to participate players have to hop onto the game’s PvP channel, which, unfortunately, only has a handful of users online at any given time; finding players to battle against can sometimes be difficult. The game’s single biggest drawback, though, is the many restrictions placed on non-paying members.

We want you to PAY!

The single biggest drawback to Dungeon Runners is that a lot of the game’s features are available only to the game’s subscribers ($5/month).  Sure, the subscription fee is a third of the price of World of Warcraft, but MMO Hut is all about free MMORPGs, so I still have to dock off points from Dungeon Runners for having too many restrictions on non-members.  One of the major restrictions to playing Dungeon Runners for free is that they cannot use the highest ‘tier’ weapons in the game.  The game’s equipment system is structured like this; Gray weapons are normal, green are superior, blue is magical, yellow is rare, purple is unique, and rainbow is mythic.  Non members can only use 5% of the mythic and 25% of unique weapons in Dungeon Runners, which is a pretty hefty restriction considering how powerful unique and mythic weapons are.  On top of that, only paying members can access the higher level dungeons in the game, so unless you’re willing to pay for Dungeon Runners, you’re bound to hit dead end at some point of places to explore and level up at.

Final Verdict – Fair
Dungeon Runners is a fun, fast-paced MMORPG with great humor, but unfortunately the game’s lackluster graphics and minimal character customization hurt it.  The game’s primary drawback is that far too many of the game’s features are for paying members only.  If you’re looking for a good laugh, do download the game and give it a try, but, unless you’re willing to pay for the game, there just isn’t enough to do in Dungeon Runners to keep your attention.
