Deicide Online Overview

Deicide Online is an interesting, 3D Fantasy MMORPG that has quite a bit of history behind it.  The game was released in 2006 and launched with quite a large playerbase, but those figures died down significantly.  The game today only has a handful of dedicated players left.  Deicide Online has an incredibly unique skill-based progression system that allows a great deal of variety.  There are sixteen playable classes in Deicide, and no two people of the same class are the same, as the game’s skill system allows for a great deal of character customization.  The game’s four skill types – range, close, dark magic, and white magic – all level up independently from each other.  A character’s actual level is the sum of all of their skill levels.  The game also has a fairly interesting open PvP environment, but unfortunately, the dated graphics and incredibly small population may ward people away from this game.

Deicide Online Review

By Omer Altay

The first thing that popped into my head when I logged into Deicide Online was ‘Wow, this game must be at least six years old’. Boy was I wrong. Upon doing a little bit of research, the game was released in the middle of 2006.  There is simply no excuse for a game made in 2006 to have the poor quality graphics that Deicide Online has.  Heck, Priston Tale has only slightly worse graphics than Deicide Online and Priston Tale was released in 2001!  I personally don’t put a great deal of weight on a game’s graphics, as even the prettiest looking game can be a failure if the gameplay sucks, but unfortunately Deicide Online, although innovative, has repetitive and buggy gameplay.  The worst of both worlds!  The game also has an incredibly small playerbase, so it’s really the worst of three worlds.  With free MMORPGs like Runes of Magic, Perfect World and Atlantica Online available, there really is no reason to play Deicide Online.  To be fair though, the game isn’t all bad.  It has a lot of innovative features and varied gameplay, but the game is ultimately still worth avoiding.

First Impressions
Well, after several attempts at patching and launching the game I finally got in.  My client crashed about four times simply trying to log into the game, but after logging in for the first time, the problem seemed to have solved itself.  Upon logging in for the first time, I was presented with a surprisingly ‘cool’ cut scene that showed a hooded individual walk into a church.  The character paced towards the center of the church while the camera angle kept changing to make the scene look even more interesting.  The shrouded figure then threw off his hood and cape and bam, that character is the player.  All I can say is “wow”.  After playing countless MMORPGs, this little unknown free MMORPG called Deicide Online has one of the most interesting introductions out there.  Sure it’s not nearly as epic intro cut scene to World of Warcraft, but it’s still an interesting way to transition to the character creation screen.  Unfortunately, everything goes downhill from here.  Character customization is limited, the graphics are horrible for a game made in 2006, and the game has a tiny playerbase.  On top of that, the game has no tutorial.  This is already a recipe for disaster.

Poor Mechanics
My first gameplay-related complaint about Deicide Online emerged rather quickly.  The game’s movement and combat mechanics are terribly designed.  Kiting, a hit and run strategy used by spellcasters to avoid getting hit, just doesn’t work, as casting a spell on an enemy from a distance can be extremely frustrating.  In order to cast a spell, players have double click their target, which sounds easy enough, but when that enemy is chasing your character, double clicking becomes difficult.  I can’t tell if I’m just failing or the game simply isn’t registering my clicks accurately, because half of the time This usually results the player running up to the enemy rather than casting a spell, as clicking a spot on the screen is how players move.  Another ridiculous game mechanic issue that I discovered was that monsters could literally hit my character when clearly not within melee range of the attacking monster.  This is a problem that tends to hurt the game’s spellcaster and archer classes the most as they rely most on hit and run tactics.  Apparently I’m not the only one complaining about these issues either, as plenty of gamers on the game’s official forums have also been reporting similar problems, but the publisher doesn’t seem to care enough to patch the game.  Lastly, the game has a ridiculous bug where if a player types out more than one ‘line’ worth of text, the game just repeats the first line twice rather than actually displaying the two full lines the player typed out.  You’d imagine that such an obvious glitch would have been fixed ages ago, but it seems as if the publisher just doesn’t care.

At least it’s a bit a unique.
The one thing that Deicide Online has going for it is that the game is unique.  Instead of the traditional level up progression system that most games employ, Deicide Online has an innovative skill-based progression system.  The game’s four primary ‘skills’ are range, close, dark magic, and white magic.  Using melee attacks will improve a characters ‘close’ level while using a bow will increase a characters ‘range’ skill.  Using dark magic spells will improve all dark magic skills, while using white magic spells will improve all dark magic skills.  New players start with a single ability in all four of the game’s skills, and depending on which skills a player uses the better he or she becomes at that type of skills.  Since players don’t specifically select their class at the beginning of the game, they’re free to experiment with all four skill types and mix and match them to their liking.

What makes this system so unique is that players in Deicide Online can focus on improving their White Magic skills and their melee skills to create a ‘paladin’ like class that is effective in melee combat as well as healing. Another interesting example of a character build would be melee skills on top of dark magic skills which would allow a player to damage enemies from a distance and then fight them in melee range once they get closer.  A character’s actual ‘level’ is the sum of all their individual skill levels.  For example, a character that’s level four in ‘dark magic’, level eight in ‘ranged’, level one in ‘close’ and level one in ‘white magic’ would be level fourteen as that is the sum of all the individual skill levels.  The system is indeed unique, but unfortunately it’s not perfectly balanced.  There is no benefit to using melee attacks early in the game as ‘dark magic’ spells are much more powerful.  It does get a bit more balanced towards the later levels of the game, but unfortunately with the game’s tiny population and gameplay glitches there is little motivation to get to the ‘end game’ portion of Deicide Online.

Hackers, PvP, And Last minute thoughts
After logging out from the game, I decided to do a little bit research about the game to see if I missed anything.  After reading a few forums, I learned that the game has quite a bit of hackers dominating the game’s PvP aspects of the game with their hacked weapons.  I don’t doubt the validity of these hacking claims, as the game had no anti-hacking software.  Most free MMORPGs today use programs like Game Guard and Xtrap to prevent people from exploiting their games, but apparently the folks behind Deicide Online don’t seem to care.  Deicide does label itself as a ‘pvp focused’ game but it just doesn’t have the playerbase to even be considered a PvP-oriented game.  Heck, it takes a great deal of effort to even find another player in the game let alone find someone to fight.  One effortless thing the game’s publisher can do to improve the game would be to combine the game’s three servers, so instead of three dead servers the game could have a single more populated server.  With so many great free MMORPGs, there really is no reason to play Deicide.

Final Verdict – Poor
Deicide Online has a unique skill based progression system which leads to a great deal of variety in the game, but unfortunately that’s the only remotely good aspect of the game.  The graphics are quite dated, the playerbase is almost nonexistent and there are a lot of gameplay bugs.  It also seems like the publisher just gave up on the game, as obvious bugs aren’t being patched.
