PAX West 2016 Day Two Recap

PAX West 2016 Day Two Recap

Eternal (Dire Wolf)

One of my biggest fears about Eternal was that it would just be a clone, since it was designed by Dire Wolf (who designed Elder Scrolls Legends) and looks like Hearthstone. Yes, a lot of popular games use the Hearthstone style but it works. Let’s not harp on that too long. Eternal feels like a combination between the Hearthstone style mechanics with the options of Magic: the Gathering.

PAX West 2016 Recap: Eternal

A Starting Draw

Unlike some other PC card games, your character does not dictate what cards you can/cannot play. It may make sense in some games, but not here in Eternal. If you really want [and I do really want] you can run all five colors and make what I called in MTG “Five Colored Fun”. Eternal has some mechanics that really wowed me. Some of it I saw hints of in Elder Scroll Legends, with the “if your top card is [blank] type, gain [x] buff”, but you can’t see the card. The game will let you know if you get the buff. Other notable things for me were some of the sickening Echo-style combos you can play. There are cards that when cast, you can cast the spell again for free. If you want to keep doing it you can find a way to put that card back into your deck and simply keep recasting until you hear them cry.

The style of gameplay will make it accessible to anyone and the ability to play the game without a lot of mana management [in multi-colored decks] made me happy. As long as you have the Sigils for that color in play you can cast what you need [if you have the amount of overall Influence; their mana system]. Eternal made me incredibly happy and I’m looking forward to more time with it post-Pax.
