Linux MMORPGs
Even though free to play MMORPGs and MMO Games are growing in popularity, there are still very few MMORPGs that are compatible with Linux. Now this isn’t that surprising considering only 1% of PC users have Linux installed. The best way for Linux users to play an MMORPG is install Windows, but those that don’t want to do that still have a few choices. The following MMORPGs / MMOs (Pay to play games included) are fully compatible with Linux:
Savage 2
Savage 2 is an innovative free to play MMO that mixes the RPG and RTS genres to create a unique gaming experience. The game has top notch graphics and fluid gameplay. It plays on Windows, Mac and Linux.
Regnum Online
Regnum Online is a 3D Free to Play MMORPG that plays a lot like the pay to play game Dark Age of Camelot. In fact, much of the game’s content is remarkably similar. Choose from one of 3 warring factions and fight for control over castles and relics.
Dofus
Dofus is a 2D gorgeously animated fantasy MMORPG that runs on both Linux and Mac. The game is largely pay to play but does offer some free to play components. It has turn based combat and varied classes.
Quake Live
Although this one is sort of a browser game, it does involve the download of a plugin to work correctly. The game officially added Linux and Mac support in late 2009. Quake Live is basically a free to play version of the popular Quake 3 game.
Tibia
Tibia is a classic pay to play 2D MMORPG with a free trial. The game was originally released in 1997 and is only 20 MB in size. The game launched its Linux client back in 2006.
RuneScape
RuneScape is a popular java based free to play MMORPG on the browser published by Jagex. Like several of the other games on this list, RuneScape also works perfectly fine on a Mac.
Wurm Online
Wurm Online is largely a pay to play MMORPG with a very limited free to play component to it. The game was released in 2006 by a small team of developers and has largely inferior graphics than most modern games.
Vendetta Online
Vendetta Online is a pay to play sci-fi themed MMORPG that competes with games like Eve Online and Black Prophecy. The game has a fairly small playerbase but has both a Linux client and a Mac one.
Note: Many other MMORPGs work fine on Linux if you use WINE to trick a game into thinking you’re using windows. The games above were built to support Linux, so no special tricks are required to get the above games to work on Linux. Games that work through WINE are not listed above.
