This was a tough pick, as there are actually a handful of incredible free MMOFPS games, but out of all of them, Combat Arms is the most polished and has the most features. Combat Arms is a fast paced tactical shooter by Nexon with numerous game modes, customizable weapons and maps. The reason that this game takes the #1 slot is two fold. Firstly, it has the largest playerbase (by far) amongst free to play shooters. Secondly, it has tons of maps and game modes.
2. Alliance of Valiant Arms
Alliance of Valiant Arms from ijji is easily one of the best looking MMOFPS games out there. The graphics are top notch, the gameplay is fluid and the game has a unique achievement system. Those looking for a solid MMOFPS to try should definitely give Alliance of Valiant Arms a try.
3. S4 League
S4 League earned its #3 spot as the best MMOFPS due to its uniquely fast paced, sci fi gameplay. S4 League did something few MMOFPS games did. It is genuinely unique. The game has incredible music, solid gameplay, multiple maps and much more. The only drawback to S4 League is that there are only a handful of game modes and few items in the game’s shop. If you haven’t played S4 League yet, go ahead and start downloading it now.
4. Genesis A.D
This sci-fi themed MMOFPS from ijji mixes fast paced action with fun – as players can literally boost across the entire map and do wall jumps. The game’s core aiming mechanics are solid and the maps are varied. It’s also one of the few sci-fi themed MMO shooters out there.
5. Cross Fire
CrossFire is another Counter-Strike like 3D tactical MMOFPS. It has several different game modes and some addictive gameplay. Unlike other popular MMOFPS games, CrossFire isn’t very demanding on the computer, so almost anyone can play it. The game has a large playerbase and some solid gameplay mechanics.
6. GunZ: The Duel
GunZ is a classic. It’s really the first mega popular free to play MMOFPS game and is still regarded as one of the best MMOFPS games of all time, and rightfully so. Some may disagree with me on this pick, but the fact is Wolf Team is both unique and has silk smooth gameplay. Players can play as both large werewolves or as marines through the game with the option of transforming between both at anytime. With over 100 weapons available for purchase and numerous maps WolfTeam is one of the most polished MMOFPS games on the market.
9. Quake Live
Quake Live is basically just Quake 3 that’s launched through the browser. It has numerous additions to the game including matchmaking and a friends system. If you’ve never had a chance to play Quake 3, you should definitely look into Quake Live, as it’s a solid shooter.
10. War Rock
War Rock is an intense MMOFPS that’s currently being published by Gamers First. It plays a lot like games from the Battlefield Series, as it has an incredible amount of vehicles ranging from tanks to helicopters. War Rock is certainly worth the download

combat arms has good gameplay, but I found that it has some bad problems with hacking, maybe they fixed it by now because i haven’t played it for a few months, overall this seems to be a pretty fair list, by the way, I love Gunz The Duel, and I wouldn’t have tried it if I hadn’t watched your first look ReMo.

Please use the MO tag. If you’d like to know what a true-to-life MMOFPS is, look up PlanetSide or World War II Online. Huge maps, persistent worlds, hundreds of players shooting each other. They are the only real defining MMOFPS in the genre. A few of the games on this list aren’t even FPS. Let’s break that part down, yes?
First-person (FP) – This means from the perspective of the character you are controlling. If there isn’t a gun in the bottom-right corner of your screen, it isn’t first-person.
Although, I won’t deny that they’re all shooters. I personally haven’t played WWII Online, but I’ve played PlanetSide extensively. In its hayday, it was an absolutely incredible game. PlanetSide is definitely the cornerstone for any game that should properly carry the MMOFPS tag. The game is still around and it’s still very fun, but development has ceased and the playerbase is dropping off. It contains elements of RPGs as well – level up opportunities for two different leveling fields: Battle Rank (which provides certification points to be able to use more equipment at once) and Command Rank (which gives the player different abilities to command the battlefield and eventually a global chat option), an in-game clan/guild system known as outfits. 10 continents, 6 underground caves, dozens of different weapons and vehicles, thousands and thousands of kilometers of open world to fight on..Kind of makes your MOFPS seem less massive, yes?
Don’t get me wrong, fellas. I have played many games on your list and I enjoy them. I’ve also played other games that think they’re MMO like Guild Wars and Global Agenda. The only time you have a “massive” amount of people is when you’re in a town. It’s a MMO lobby, but once you’re actually playing, the game is merely MO.
In a nutshell, MMO is not these games. These games are not MMO. It is a title that a game has a LOT to live up to.
P.S. Counter-Strike is not MMO. When you have 50v50 matches on bigger maps, shot me a holla. Maybe I’ll reconsider.

Chillax brah. MMOHut has a broad definition of MMOFPS. Planet side and WW2 Online are the only “PERSISTENT WORLD” MMOFPS games perhaps, but games like Alliance of Valiant Arms and Combat Arms are Massive (Lots of players online) Multiplayer (This ones obvious) and Online. Games like AvA / CA fit the definition of MMOFPS. Battlefield 2 doesn’t have the same persistent world RPG elements that the games on this do. Also we only look at free to play games on here.
Sure, calling Combat Arms an MMO is a bit of a stretch, but these games market themselves as MMOs and it’s not completely unreasonable to classify them that way. Btw, PlanetSide is an awesome game. I used to play that a lot back in the day.

wow um what i have to say about the mmo comments. they both are verry opinionated but ReMo has put some detail behind his reason not saying hes right or anything. but my idea of an mmofps would be a litte OPEN WORLD not just 16-32 players i mean i like alot of 16-32 player games its jsut if we could have an mmo fps where you could use spore like creation to make your weapons and make it open world then i would realy consider it to be mmofps.

People will definitely disagreee with me but GunZ The Duel is at the top of my list. I mean any real GunZ player knows the game is good not for what it was intended, but for what it is. Also, personal opinion here, Crossfire takes more skill than Combat arms because IMO combat arms is more of a spray fest. Also, how is CS not listed here. Third, AVA is more recognized as #1 by more sites than Combat Arms.

Couter strike is not popular on computers? what universe are you living in… counter strike on pc is the most played online game of all time. To date it has the largest number of players and servers. And let me show my point on the whole MMOFPS thing because you abvoided the fact that several of the games on the list aren’t fps’s.

MMO= Massively Multiplayer Online
When it says massivly, it means massive as in in the same game. A 16-32 person match is not massive. World of Warcraft is massive. World War II Online is massive. AVA is not massive. I do like the game tho, don’t take this the wrong way, it’s a great game, but not a MMO. Massive as in hundreds of people playing in the same match together.

Sorry, 16, 32 even 64 playing on an instanced map is not a MMOFPS. There are only 2 of these planetside and WWII Online.
Planetside, even these day gets 200-300 in the same zone at any one time and it is not instanced.

Planetside is true MMOFPS and had it not been castrated by lack of funding from Sony would arguably be the pinnacle of MMOFPS. I’ve not tried WWII online, but agree with those saying that less than hundreds/thousands of simultaneous interacting online players in a persistent world is the definition of MMO, not the above.

I played CA for about a year after its realease cam back to it 6months later and layed some more on those 6months i felt like it just wasnt the same anymore it was no longer about getting a kill or getting into a great sniper tower it became childish and not so serious and with so many gamemodes teh orginal team deathmatch fell into the background of 3 lobbies compared to 100s of other Quartine Special TDM(<not actualy sure waht its called)Fireteam etc it just lost its lust

There, final. You got fragging and tactics. There’s different game types, like WW2, modern urban, futuristic, and even sci-fi. And if your connection is out, no problem, play some Alien Arena single player, it has 60 levels.
I don’t care if these aren’t strict MMOFPS’s, point is you get online play. I might be adding Parabellum to the list, ’cause it has iron sights and is powered by Unreal 3. But we’ll see…

I strongly agree with the perspective that these are not MMOFPS games. Lets make something clear, just because something is being done by lots of people at once, doesn’t make it a ‘MMO’. If I was wrong, every game that has ever been played online is a MMO. Massive is the arguement here though, what gives a game the label massive?
That is a good question and I am sure there is plenty of room for debate. I wouldn’t call a ‘game’ massive without at least 100 players on a single server, map, world or whatever you might call it. They call MAG (PS3) a MMO, and although it does qualify, it does it very, very poorly.
Sadly, a lot of people play and work for graphics, I don’t really grasp that idea myself. It comes down to fashion versus function, I often think this can be reflect on a persons intellect. Which side do you think the lesser lean towards? If planetside had population, zero hackers, and re-balancing (maybe even elimination of BFRs) I’d be playing it.
Those who enjoy MMOFPS games care for persistent worlds, real objectives and long term goals, and a truly massive scale. 16v16, even 32v32 on some map that you play on over and over feels so flaky and weak, perhaps I have been spoiled by the grandiose aspects of planetside.
Something that is difficult or impossible to understand without having experienced it first hand is the sense of belonging, comradery, even friendship you can gain when you play a game like planetside. You really get the opportunity to get to know someone and play a game for long periods of time with them. Many first person shooters seem to really foster a community and personalities that make way for a lot of estranged individuals. The reason why people play video games online is to do things with other people, it is a social experience in some form. If you haven’t played a real MMO and been a part of a clan/outfit/group you are really missing out on something fantastic.
I am not trying to express an idea of hate, I am nobody really, this all doesn’t really matter what I say, I hope to enlighten a few minds to the joys of planetside and the ideas of an MMOFPS. Being part of a group of people who are trying to accomplish a goal that doesn’t involve making money is such a fantastic aspect of life, seek it out.

I think the general problem is so many developers are afraid of taking a chance and making something really different. They seek to please as many people as possible, but we all know what happens when you mash a bunch of different things together. You get this brown, stinky waste that nobody but fools want.

Recently dusted off my Planetside account. One of the most undersupported games ever. SOE should be smacked for letting this concept rot on the vine.
Even these days, one can find battles with 200 players involved. Infantry struggling to cross a no mans land, tanks shelling the lines, aircraft falling burning from the skys. And this is a “Dead” game…
No npc’s in the game. Everything that moves is player controlled, and driven. People make the battleplans, and missions. Anyone who would say a 16 player, controlled, scripted multiplayer “match” is MMO is an idiot.

Wth with the people who cry for the MMO use. The first M NEVER ask for MASSIVE player on one match but on all the game so any fps online with a good amount of player online at a same time is a MMOFPS. I can’t help but point out… If the first M does mean “Massive”… It was a term coined by the RPG games of the 90′s. It was one of Everquest’s sales boosters that it was a social gaming experience, versus a consoles limited multiplayer capabilities.
Which were 16 players, with multiple consoles connected I believe. Explain to me how, 20 years later a 32 MAX player game is massive in any way? Perhaps if you were older, or more experienced in video game history you might grasp the concept. Or perhaps it is just that you have never played a truely MMO game that didnt break down the content into 5/10/25 man instanced sessions. “AKA World of Warcraft”
Game companies rarely produce true MMO’s anymore. They are a technical nightmare, full or latency and server packet loss. While you may walk around the virtual world with a couple hundred people, you dont dungeon crawl or play CTF with them. Precisely for this reason. World events in such games are always buggy and in general dont happen that often also for this reason.
Planetside at it’s max had 400 – 500 people fighting in the same world enviroment, on 1 continent. And yes there are multiple continent’s… Please tell me of another FPS game that did this? If not, my previous statement stands.

After reading my own post, I felt the need to clarify. That Everquest is not 20 years old. I was refering to it’s origin in Multi User Dungeon “MUD” games. These were Telnet client, TEXT based “No Graphics” games which were the true first MMO’s. With several hundred online players at the same time.

Remo!! D< what about Project blackout ;_; it may not be massive but it sure is an awesome game, the weapons and shooting style to me is so far, IMO, un-matched, I came here thinking I might find a good new fps to play, but idk about most of these, there's something off about the most of them that I have played that turns me away from it, like combat arms, sure there's lots of people and the way you shoot is like decent, but it's quite true that NX dominates the game, war rock is third person and I didnt like it bc of that and bc u can hardly ever tell where ur getting shot from, AvA is good for zombies (CAs zombies kinda suck) blackshot shooting/aiming system to me just is awful and it really turned me off from it as well, I heard gunZ was overrun with hacks s4 league is actually pretty good, but they have a bit of a hacking problem as well, also TPS not FPS but its still pretty decent

Wolfteam should not be on this list, yes its a very polished game from a “playing experience only”. Given I play this game almost daily, have a couple kids that adore this thing. I have not seen a game of this size have sooooo many hackers running around freely in it. AeriaGames does not appear t obe doing anything about it. The client side of this game is easy to hack. There are people almost in every match exploiting the holes in the client side component. They are flying around the map, auto-respawning etc. And the sad part, there is people SPENDING good money to buy “special” items that are compleletely worthless given all the hacking going on.

SO in terms of MMORPG, the game requires it to have a consitent world with thousands of people to be considered an MMOrpg, where as the games that do not have multiplayer are considered to be just RPG.
Now in this context, MMOFPS would also suggest the same theme as MMORPG, Persistance..over 100 players. Yet it is not?
Every game listed on this article is either a first person shooter or third person shooter… Not a single one of them has any massive aspect to it, and By GOD if you say thousands play it and that makes it a MMO, then every fucking game, ever made, ever… with multiplayer….. HELL, GOLDENEYE for the n64…. must be an MMO….
