Ever since Maple Story became enormously popular, a lot of new 2D MMORPGs have hit the market. If you’re looking for the top 10 best 2D MMORPGs, you came to the right place. It’s sort of hard to come up with a 100% accurate top 10 2D MMORPG list, but the top 2D MMORPG list below was put together using ‘user rating data’ from across the internet and from right data right here on MMOHut.

1. MapleStory
Maplestory is without a doubt, the most popular 2D MMORPG on the market. The game boasts that it has 92 million users worldwide and an enormous amount of content. From my experience with the game, its sheer simplicity and boat load of content make it well worth checking out.
Dungeon Fighter Online is an epic 2D arcade style side scrolling action MMORPG by Nexon with retro graphics. The game boasts a total of 25+ playable classes and a large playerbase.
3. Lunia
Lunia is a unique 2D Fantasy MMORPG. The gameplay is a lot more like an arcade style RPG than a traditional MMO, as players have to group together and beat all of the game’s 60 stages. The game’s sheer amount of content and addictive gameplay makes it well worth the download.
4. Grand Chase
Grand Chase is a 2D Side scrolling MMO with some interesting co-op gameplay modes. Like Lunia, players have to advance through the game’s stages in order to progress in the game. With multiple PvP options and numerous levels Grand Chase has a lot to offer. Where the game really stands apart is its huge variety of playable characters.
5. Fists of Fu
Fists of Fu is a 2D side scrolling action MMORPG by Outspark which plays a bit like Dragon Saga and MapleStory. Combat feels fast paced and takes skill. Players have to dodge enemy attacks and form combos to be effective in PvE and in PvP. Like Lunia, the game’s PvE is extremely linear, as it’s stage based.
6. LaTale
LaTale is an innovative 2D MMORPG by OGPlanet that drew a lot of its inspiration from MapleStory. Gameplay is side-scrolling, but fast paced. Unlike MapleStory though, the game has some interesting PvP options. The game is relatively new, so it doesn’t have that much content yet, but it certainly has enough things to do to keep the player entertained.
Trickster Online is a 2D Fantasy MMORPG with cute and vibrant anime graphics. It has 8 different classes and a large game world to explore. From my experience with the game, it’s easy to get into and worth the download.
8. WonderKing
Like MapleStory and LaTale, WonderKing is a 2D anime inspired side scrolling MMORPG. The game is published by Ndoors, who is best known for their turn based MMORPG Atlantica Online. Graphically speaking, the graphics in Wonderking are a bit crisper than the visuals in MapleStory and the combat feels a bit smoother too. The game doesn’t have many classes as other side scrolling games, but it still brings a lot to the table.
9. NosTale
NosTale is a 2D anime styled fantasy MMORPG by Uforia. The game has a lot of unique features including player housing, pets and a unique class system.
10. Osu
Although Osu is arguably not an MMO, the game is still quite interesting. It’s a rhythm based game based off the popular ‘Elite Beat Agents’ for the Nintendo DS. It’s sort of like Dance Dance Revolution, but for the PC and uses the mouse rather than a dance pad or a keyboard.

MapleStory suks, pixles are sh1t, compared to wonderking, the service sucks, there is no such thing as customer service for maple, there are ranty little children wandering around ruiing the community, the only reason its #1 is cause of the population nothing more. Grandchase is actually a good game, not that many people to ruing your fun of the game. Even though wonderking was recently releases its popularity grows due to its pvp features, one cant really screw up their stats since every equipment is statless, so one can build their own and have their own uniqueness but not that many people will do so anyways. besides how can people say that wonderking sucks just cause it is a copy of maple, even though maple is just a copy of everything else from their themed dugeons to their server beign named after car companies, if anything sucks it has to be maplestory!

Oi u guys maple rocks lah!. I am a level 50 aran(the best class in my opinion) and played for onli 1 whole week with each day 1.5 hours. The skills so damn nice and patchers and services are so good. So happy they ranked maple 1st in WORLD.

Maple is nice, but the player economy is a mess. The free market is ridiculous, and the MTS is set so it is useless for anyone under lvl 50 or so, unless they are cash players. And even then there are usually better uses for NX at that lvl. Nexon is trying to milk it’s players for every drop of cash they can, but they’re doing it wrong. Not going to play maple again until/unless they fix the busted auction system.
(each use of the auction house charges a commission of 500 nx, or 50 cents. This isn’t too much,but it does make it so low players simply can’t auction gear. A straight % would be far superior and just as effective)

Maple sucks…Wonderking is like Maplestory but it’s 10x better…I’d rather die than play maple (truth be told..). Wonderking is better, faster level up, and way better graphics compared to crappy Maple. The only reason you like maple, is cuz you’re just a kid, and only little kids play games like maple which ruined the game big time (cuz of constant crying).

I am confused. I didnt get a chance to try LaTale, because the file was ‘Corrupted and unable to read’ APPARENTLY! And maplestory just so hard 2 lvl, FOR ME!? and um well i stopped playin a few yrz back, and well for wonderking, i started yesterday, but the mouse MOVES REALLY REALLY SLOW! idk why??? but it ruins the game, it took me a full 22 minutes, to change my bow. (i am a scout.) I changed it from a lvl 1 bow to a lvl 5 bow (i am new to the game sso i didnt lvl much) and it took me a full 22 minutes! WHY? does this happen to anyone else? Also for stuff like dragon chase, or windslayer, can anyone tell me if they are good or which one is better, cuz i think i am wasting my time downloading all this! well i reckon maplestory and dragonica is probably the best only because maple story know has BIG BANG which is like awesome cuz like the “classic” maplestory is like frikin hard to lvl when big bang come out it is 5x faster to lvl!!!!! and like i only have a lv 60 aran, lv 57 cleric, lv 53 night walker, lv 52 dualblader, lv 38 evan. Some classes are overpowered like dualblader. The community is like stupid cuz like in scania like today the price of this thing is 4 mil next day 12 mil!!!! and lots of ppl scam like i lost my steelies(worth 3 mil) he took it for 1 mil becausehe was doing this 11111111 and quickly decling the trade before i could press the trade button. I also very much reccomend wonderking(only lv 1-30) cuz i have lv 30 dit and like i stuffed up( added str) and i really cant fix it…
also there is Far tooo MUCH skills like hell!!!!!! and monsters take a bit too long to kill and there isnt anything like currency in the game cuz u just buy from shops not from other ppl like maple. THats wat make maple very interesting and it also has basilmarket- check it out its cool

Maplestory is the beast, backbone to Wonderking. Wonderking’s actual graphics and movement, “physics” actually ruined the game.(When u jump and its very robotic like) People who say maplestory sucks basically either never played maplestory or just hated because they can’t grind levels. Maplestory is so much better, user friendly, everything is not everywhere like wonderking. Smoother gameplay and not so random. Guess what maplestory haters? Big Bang update is coming up and the graphics and exp curve will be improved. One thing i must say about wonderking is that i really love the attacking animations but that is it for that game. I downloaded that game hoping that it would win my heart from maplestory but it was a disappointment. The sounds of wonderking are also random and annoying.

How on earth is “Too many jobs” a bad thing? It’s like saying “TOO MANY FEATURES!” I think you’re being a bit too harsh on the game. I doubt Nexon intentionally robbed you of 20K NX cash, but it’s very possible something screwed up on their end while redeeming it or something.

I am not being stereotypical, how am i being stereotypical? That word doesn’t work in this gaming context. The way you are saying how maplestory sucks and that a lvl 39 Evan is your main now, really suggests to me that you are having a hard time leveling and settling into the game. Basically if you have been playing for so long, you would already have settled and establish the roots and at least having a few 100+ characters?
How is too many jobs a problem? It creates diversity and allow people to try every class and not get bored of the game. If a mmorpg only have 4 classes, it is going to get bored very quick. Every successful mmorpg knows that adding extra classes invites more players. Bad community? Bad customer service? Firstly, i am not living in America, and i use to need to use paypal to buy NX, and i never got scammed a single time. Very fast payment and a few seconds to load your cash shop with NX. Bad community? It’s one of the largest free gaming community in the world, and it is not bad! You constantly get help from players, and you get tonnes of guides to help you through your game. Sure, they might not be like, “Oh here, have 1mill mesos for free” but that will defeat the purpose of a rpg.
Just keep trying the game, it is getting better, i know sometimes these kind of games are not for everyone’s liking, if you don’t like it? try something like Wow, do not randomly accuse the game of attempting to scam you or how the game play sucks because i am sure many people here agrees with me. I have been playing this game for a long time and a very experience player so I am not defending this game because I am a fan but because simply the game is brilliant!

i used to play maple for along time. when dual blades came out i lost all my items because of hackers and the rollback and then right afterwards some hacker deleted my main… i think maple is good for it community ( besides the little crybabies and selfish hackers) and because they update with so much stuff and lots of classes. But i think wonderking is potentialy better. i lost all my items in ms and i was dexless lvl 110 not to mention the other chars i shared equips with but i was screwed i couldnt equip nothing and had no meso. wonderking your equipment doesnt need stats and u can do watever u want with your stat points. if wonderking would add content the way ms does then it would definatly become the best

One thing people dont get Maplestory will always be top because most players prefer it. Also, it has party quests and all that(most other games dont). “Too many hackers” well what do you think every game has hackers i played wonderking and i saw an assload of hackers so alot of you are being a bit hypocritical. These are all opinions anyway and alot of people choose maple over everything else so please get over it.

Maplestory is bad for so many reasons, 1st of all they keep releasing new classes this would be a goodthing but the classes are Overpowered and you need real money for skillbooks. 2nd of all leveling is repetitive, for every class you level at the same places, same quests( which dont give enough exp) lastly mone in that game is everything, you find yourself unable to level and have fun because you need money for potions and equips.
ive played this game for 2 years tried every class highest is 147 night lord.
btw only played cause my xbox broke now it seems like shit compared to xbox

to be honest maplestory is pretty cool but it has alot of glitches, hacking and maintenence. wonder king is ok but the graphics are kinda bad, especially when jumping. maplestory i think is the best game but i know that its a ” good ” game, same with wonderking. on the lagging scale for maplestory is a 7 but for wonder king it rarely laggs, unless alot of monsters are summoned. for LaTale… well the keys can be confusing but youll get the hang of it. its more of a game for people who can understand whats going around the story and the benefits of learning it. there is another game called windslayer which is very simaler to LaTale, but windslayer is for people who are just starting mmorpg games. maplestory is a reccomended game for people who just started mmorpg also. ~ signed beta video game tester Dennis

I cannot believe they left out Dofus. Anyone who came here looking for a good 2D MMOSRPG (“S” for “strategy”) should really check it out. It’s turn based and IT REQUIRES A VALUABLE BRAIN. It has nice art and great music, quite a large world, 14 completely individual, differentiated classes, PVP, and all the NPC names, item descriptions- pretty much everything in it is a joke, which is almost always an absurd one and often not meant for children. That said, I believe Dofus is in fact an 18+ game. Profanity is allowed I believe, but when players are excluded, there is none. If this interests you, there is also Dofus-Arena, which is almost entirely based on tactics and strategy, only having PVP, and the upcoming Wakfu, which to me seems like it will exceed in creativity and elaborate systems of the virtual world pretty much every online game I have ever seen. For one thing, there will literally be nations with governments and armies both composed of players. There are more things about it that give an insane amount of influence on everything (politics, environment, preservation of species and the environment) to every individual player. I strongly suggest these games. To be honest, the list of games here (above) look like they suck. And I know for a fact that MapleStory is ridiculously boring, having played it twice in my life and feeling, after each time, that I had wasted all that time.

You know the people saying that are like 13 lol. Anyway the fact is maplestory has so many haters because its so popular. Same as WoW. More people know about it so chances are there are more people to dislike it. Say maple has 1000 players and half hate it. That’s 500 people. Now say wonderking has 100 and 99% of them hate it. That’d be 99 people. So wonderking has less haters than maplestory? That’s becaude less people know about it. All in all. Honestly though I played maple and wonderking a ton. Maple is way faster in leveling and has tons more content plus pvp now. Wonderking takes an eternity to level compared to wonderking. I even played wonderking back in closed beta and it was slow as crap still. Wonderking becomes a grinder at level 50 or so and it sucks nuts. Maplestory legit has far more entertainment value. It had way more classes and NO flashy skills is not the same thing as overpowered. Just because something has cooler looking skills doesn’t mean it does more damage. And the jump patch for GMS comes out soon with even MORE class balancing. Cry all you like but your crap games aren’t better Just because you like it. Its all purely opinion. Okay guys. Stop messing around with this subject. Omer and Jake put effort to make this list. All the players (all the mmogamers) around the globe had opinions about the best 2d games/etc. They maybe put in those games because they saw they’re liked, loved,and tried by alot of players. Don’t even bother with maplestory. The game is riddled with hackers & the market is so out of control due to the continuous barrage of hackers. Back when Wizet published Maple, they actually took control of the hacker issue & cleaned their servers. Nexon is sloppy & leaves the game open to sign-up’s which perpetuates their issue with hackers. Best suggestion is not to bother with maple unless you don’t mind getting your account backhacked at some point.
