Just One MMO Isn’t Enough

Sometimes, one game just isn’t enough. Most of us want to invest solely in one character we love, one guild we like, and one game we find satisfying and entertaining. MMORPGs are such a social activity, and most of the rewards are long-term, so this approach is (in theory) the most rewarding. In reality, there are many, especially in the F2P realm, who bounce from title to title, picking up and moving whenever one gets boring. People like this may wish that they could stay in one place indefinitely, but the realities of the limitations of the MMO development process mean that it’s highly unlikely any one game will be able to hold the average person’s attention for very long. Unless they’ve never even played an MMO, of course. Then they’ll probably get an acute case of “MMO fever” for a year or two, maybe longer, after which their immune system will have jaded them enough to make single-minded commitment to one game nearly impossible.

CosmicBreak – A new MMO I recently Tried

The limitations of the genre today is a subject I broach upon frequently. While that’s an aspect of this issue, it isn’t the entire problem. I’ve played many, many different types of MMORPGs, some very similar, and some very different. The most unique one I’ve played is EVE Online, and that’s primarily because the game experience, driven heavily by player actions and politics, is a dynamic one that doesn’t really need a development team to squeeze out regular content updates to keep the player population from dying of boredom. This kind of approach might seem ideal, but for some people, it’s almost a little too real. The potential for getting sucked into the social intrigues of a game like EVE pose a very immediate threat to one’s ‘real-life’, and a great number of us might be simply creeped out by a game of that depth and complexity. Others still might find a game of that design the holy grail of MMORPGs. Personally, I’m on the fence.

Eve Online – One of the most in depth MMORPGs out. Too bad it’s P2P =[

In order to progress in most end-game content, no matter what game you're playing, you usually need to find a group of people (a guild, a clan, a corporation, etc.) and start coordinating. Especially in raid focused games like World of Warcraft and Runes of Magic. These days it's not usually impossible to make progress with “casual” participation, that is to say, perhaps showing up for a raid once, twice, perhaps three or four times a week at a scheduled time. Because of this, players might not always want to spend all of their time in the same game world, as much as they may enjoy the community there. Fresh stimulation calls, but with P2P games, finding new distractions to tide you over between major events in your “primary” game is expensive, and altogether impossible for a gamer on a limited budget. It's for this very reason, as no one knows when MMORPGs will suddenly make a quantum leap towards being more interesting and cool, that the F2P model is so important, and why its increasing popularity in the mainstream is a good sign.

If it serves no other purpose, F2P will help us all chase off the doldrums, and postpone our inevitable nervous breakdown when we are forced to step back and examine the smoking wreckage of our lives*. Thank you F2P, for helping us more easily distract ourselves from ourselves! We salute you.

*Individual wreckage subject to varying degrees of smoking. Some may experience smoldering, steaming, and in severe cases, burning. If burning persists, contact your psychotherapist immediately.

In the end, after sifting through the many, many titles out there wanting to be our primary distraction, we usually do find a game we go back to frequently. This game is not the same for everyone, as everyone, after all, is different. What’s your favorite game? How often do you switch titles, and how many different MMOs at once do you think you’ve been played with any kind of regularity? Or if you truly have stuck it out with one game for a long time, what game is that, and why? I’d like to know, so I can check it out myself!

I usually play at least one new title a week, which last me anywhere from a couple days to a couple months before i quit and go back to my 1 true love…Grandchase. With the constant stream of new content updates, the fairly helpful(despite what most players would say)team at ntreev, 10 playable characters(most of which currently have 4 jobs) and a new one on the horizon, its really no mystery why this game has held my interest for over 2 years now.

Same, I always try new F2P games but I always go back to GC. I have now tried every F2P game (no joke) and now I just read mangas, play GC, and register for closed/open beta games. A truly pathetic life, I know.

I’ve played pretty much everything out there because I’m exactly one of those people who jump to another game every 2 weeks or so. There are a few that I go back to every now and then and play for a month or two.
Mabinogi is the main one. I’ve got a lot of friends who still play that, so I have reasons to go back every now and then. I’ve actually just started playing again after 6 months of inactivity. :V
The other one is Guild Wars. It was the first real MMORPG I played, so I guess it has sentimental value or something. :V Might also have to do with the fact that I’ve played that one the longest of any game after playing it for about 2 and a half years.

Free to play games definitely are plentiful enough to keep me pseudo-entertained for a long time, even if I do only play each one for a week or so. :V

I, admittedly, go through a game every couple weeks. I’ll find a game (like europe 1400, face of mankind, and others). Here and again, I feel enough drive to hang around for a month, and think It’s worth it…but I just lose interest. Which is why i’m ridiculously excited for games like The old republic, and the F2P rereleases of WAR and LOTRO. Why? Because, those are three, subscription free titles. All of which I love. Meaning that that’s three, well made mmos that I can play for fun, not because I need an hour a day to get my moneys worth.

just remember, the best games are always pay to play, so don’t think that it could be free to play!
however, if a games starts to have a shrinking playerbase and the developers know that, they would really give it out and it would be a lifetime giveaway!

I’m currently playing Aika, it’s quite fun and I don’t think I’ll quit any time soon.
The longest I ever play an mmorpg, mmo etc is about 3 days. I’ve played countless mmo’s and they’re just not holding my interest.
The longest game I’ve ever played would have to be Runescape. I played it for 2 years. I don’t know how I managed to play it for 2 years, but it was fun. I hate it now, though.

As for f2p there is only one game that I play every week at least 4 times.
    That game is AVA.
I enjoy mmos when I can just log in, join a game, and start kickin’ some butt.
For p2p I’m always switching between WoW, WAR, and Aion.

I try a lot of different F2P games. Sometimes I will even play one for a week before trying out a new one. Awesome that I can do that; there is always a new one. Ah! But none of them are perfect. Each one I try has a flaw that turns into a show stopper. Combat Arms is a rich kid’s game. Battlefield Heroes won’t let me choose a server and plays in a window. Alods Online was very close but the whole no mini map thing turned me off. Perfect World has the best toon maker out there but the goofy monsters turned me off. Voyage Century was the closest but the gameplay and crafting system turned me off. World of Kung Fu was good but the endless grinding turned me off. So I play these until I get bored and then go back to Guild Wars although the fact of being thwarted by a small cliff drives me crazy. Don’t get me started on Champions Online, which really should go F2P. Soon.
Someday a hundred monkeys will write Shakespeare and that one perfect game will emerge.I hope.

I play on a free server for Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst (the official servers have been shut down). The people in charge have improved over the base game in many ways that makes it a better choice than playing the older versions. If I include my playtime of the game since the original Dreamcast version… either 2001 or 2002 until today, on and off. So maybe… three and a half years total? It should be noted that the year I played on Dreamcast was solo since we didn’t get online for the system, then about a year on the Gamecube multiplayer with a friend, then as a sophomore in college I started again with the free server version of Blue Burst. The fundamental game isn’t so different that I’d count time spent with it separately.

hm .. the longest game i played was probably Cabal .. the PvP was what kept me playing, but everyhtign else i found boring. hm .. for a shooter i would say s4league has/still holds my interest despite the laggers and few maps its fun. I try games tht have cool trailers and mostly CBT/OBT testing ones if i can. Most don’t last more than 1 month or so.

if maplestory becomes too boring you can try private servers, they twist up the gameplay in fun ways.

I used to go through games about every 3 days. Now I don’t even bother with click and cast games where you just click on the mob and press keys. I used to play D2 alot and have gone back to it several times, but not in awhile. I also go back to GW sometimes. At one point I played 3 MMOs at once, but that was awhile ago. The game I probably played the longest was DOMO (Dream of Mirror Online) for about 2 years, but after that never really went back to it.Now I play Dragonica occasionally, and an RTS (Supcom: FA). I really don’t like any of the f2p MMOs that much, so I suppose I’ll have to wait for the “next-gens” (C9, TERA, Vindictus).

I have been eyeing games and signing up for betas. I have tried a few different MMOs, and also tried EVE Online for a few months. I am waiting for Black Prophecy, then The Old Republic, and Jumpgate Evolution. But the one game I always go back to, and have for years, is Garry’s Mod. I love space sim games, I don’t like the dice roll mechanics that EVE has, I love the twitch based shooting that Black Prophecy and JGE.

Why is it so hard to find a persistant world scifi MMORPG with 1st/3rd person shooting? I know EVE Online is making that new game where you fight on the planets in the same universe and it affects the EVE game. What was that called….Dust?

In my opinion, if you want a good quality game, you either have to look at free games, which is made by companies who also made P2P games, or you have to pay for it.
Currently the free game that i’m enjoying is League of Legends, I like it alot. :)

i go through about 2 f2p games aday, sometimes it’ll be one i’ve already played because it looks like it’ll be fun again lol.

long story short i have alot of mid level characters on alot of games.

Only games im currently looking forward to their releases are Vindictus which is a f2p game published by Nexon

And Soul & Blade which is published by NCsolf which is going to be p2p

I have a feeling i’ll end up sticking with one of these games for awhile since they both seem like high quality games that will keep my attention.

there are 3 games that no matter where i go will always be something i return to
    1. maplestory, i leave maple story for a year and then they draw me back in with some new job or event.
    2. kingdom of loathing i can’t leave this browser based game because i love the community and the constant stream of updates
    3. Grandchase I can’t get enough of this game and it’s individuality, it’s unlike any game i’ve ever seen. It dosn’t help that their updates never fail to impress.

I have Been playing World of warcraft Private servers for a few months for the PvP. I originally Played Everquest online For 9years… I had a lvl 85 Barbarian Warrior and a lvl 83 Human Cleric. Then After EQ i went To SWG, Then onto DDO where i stayed til lvl 14 came out and maxed out there then kept paying on DDO and ALSO bought a LOTRO account i played Lotro until 6 months or so after Mines of moria was out i had 3 lvl 60s i had a Warden, a Hunter, and a Captain, then i started playing FPS games i tryed Crossfire, Op7, and more i stuck with Warrock for awhile and then i went on to MMOs agian and I got into Battle of the immortals Beta i got lvl 90 On BOI as a Slayer and i moved on to RoM where i played a mage i got lvl 40 on RoM and got bored and then i stepped into the PvP world of savage 2 i played it for a few then went back to ground zero playing Everquest agian…. i guess that proves that some people always end up where they started Everquest has been going since 2006 and is a Gold-Digger game and it takes money Evrey month PLUS evrey few months considering the new expansions they have… I am currently max lvl on 4 classes.. a Warrior, Ranger, Cleric, and a Shadow Knight..

I usually pick up a new title if it looks good on this site here. Most games hardly keep my interest for longer than 2 or 3 days, some ones that have would be League of Legends, DDO, and Last Chaos (I keep going back to it, hoping with my new rig, I won’t lag like a bitch, so far, so bad), I just recently picked up Aika Online and played till around lvl 13 before I realized that grinding on this game is really boring.

Due to the fact that I used to have a netbook (a small 10 inch screen laptop that is clearly NOT made for gaming) I would try out games everyday. And the one that I stuck to was Perfect World.
But now since I got a new laptop i’m playing Runes of Magic. The longest time I ever played an MMO was 1 month. And Runes of Magic for about 2 weeks. But I have a feeling I won’t stop playing soon…
