Some new MMORPG / MMO Ideas
Even though there are a boat load of free to play games on the market – I feel that so many of them are using the same old recycled ideas over and over again. New games like Grand Fantasia by Aeria Games and Cloud Nine by Netgame are great, but they’re still the ‘same old’ generic 3D Fantasy MMORPGs that game developers have been churning out for the last 3+ years. Sure, these newer MMORPGs are more ‘refined’ as gameplay is constantly getting more fluid while graphics keep on improving, but fundamentals remain the same. This is especially true for free to play games, as it seems like no developer wants to ‘take a chance’ and make something ‘different’. It seems like every time a new free to play game comes out it’s either another generic 3D Fantasy MMORPG or some 8 year old title that’s being re-launched in North America (ie. Red War, Mir 2, Esteria Mythos). Again, these game’s aren’t necessarily bad, but I’d love to see some more variety in the genre.
One way to spice things up in the MMORPG front would be for game developers to make more sci-fi themed games. There really aren’t any great sci-fi MMORPGs on the market right now, aside from maybe Megaten, so there’s definitely a lot of room in that market. There are also very few if any ‘modern’ themed MMORPGs. The only one I can think of that’s vaguely modern themed is Second Life, and that’s pay to play. Even a card battling MMORPG would be interesting, but developers keep churning out 3D fantasy grind fests. This problem isn’t unique to MMORPGs – it applies to MMO games as well.
Easily half the free to play MMOs being released these days are MMOFPS games. MMOFPS games like K.O.S. Secret Operations and Alliance of Valiant Arms are good fun, but today there are so many MMO shooters out there it’s ridiculous. Every single major MMO publisher today has at least one MMOFPS game, while 5 out of 13 of ijji’s games are MMO shooters. You’d imagine out of all of these shooting games there would be at least one sci-fi themed shooter, but nope. Practically every single MMOFPS game on the market is a modern tactical shooter. At least Battlefield Heroes and S4 League are a bit unique. I’d personally love to see a developer make a platforming MMO or even an American Football MMO, as there are currently none on the market.
Hopefully 2010 will bring more unique games to the market – as I’m a bit tired of playing the same exact games with different graphics.

Well there are plenty of ideas for MMOs and MMORPGs and as you said and i believe also the devs are playing it safe. I’m currently playing AVA which is a good game. The thing is I’m tired of joinnig rooms and just kill people. A thing i would like is a shooter MMO to be open world. A MMOFPS with some RPG elements that would be player driven and be open world. No levels and stuff but to have something like quests and factions and get new weapons for you char and stuff.. This kind of game doesn’t exist yet (i think except if i missed any episodes) and i think if one came out it would be revolutionary! And if it did it would be better to make it (for me) World War II timeline. It’s more interesting and we’re flooded with modern warfare games. Plus Axis vs Allies could be the two factions a gamer might choose before he starts the game.
I really put much thought in this matter cause i’m hopping from one MMO to another one finding myself unsatisfied with everything and i thought of games that would satisfy me and propably more gamers like me.

I think that they need to come up with some new ideas for the battle system. Virtually every fantasy mmorpg has the same basic battle system when it comes down to it. The player clicks on the enemy that appears on the field and they start to hack and slash at it and special abilities are used periodically with the hotkeys or you’re a long range character or magic user and you attack from a distance. Either way it feels like a very locked system with not a lot of choices for how you fight. I’d prefer something with a world as interactive as regular mmos (like ragnarok, rose, grand fantasia etc), but with a fighting style that’s a little more interactive and doesn’t feel as robotic.
One idea I have is to make the battle style more like the Zelda series where you have far more control over you’re movement and what types of attack you are using. I think the item system in Zelda would also make a really cool addition to an mmorpg. There might be some issues with making a solid server for a game like this and making it compatible with a pc unless it has really high end graphics and processing but I think it’s doable given our current level of technology.
The other idea that comes to mind is a game based around the tales series (Tales of Symphonia, Abyss, Eternia, Vesperia etc) battle system. I remember seeing videos for the Tales of Eternia online game when it was in development and I was really disappointed when that project got canceled. I really think that the linear motion battle system the tales series uses would be great for an mmo. I always found it was the perfect compromise between a locked turn based battle system and completely free movement one like Zelda or Mario. Anyways it is a lot more interactive than the current type of battle system in most mmos.
Personally I’ll admit I’m kind of picky when it comes to video games particularly mmorpgs. I don’t really like mmos based solely around fighting other people in matches with no real world or adventure to them (like Gunbound for example) and I dislike the 2D side scrolling style of games like Maple Story. I like turn based console games often enough but really dislike turn based mmorpgs, I find there really isn’t anything interesting about them.

Esivo: you might want to check out Battleground Europe, while not free to play, you do get a trial period. Its an open world mmofps in ww2 times with axis vs allies. I don’t think it has much rpg value, but considering its ww2 and open world i figured it sorta fit in with what you were saying. There are no quests either. If only it was free…

i pretty much agree with this article though i think its not neccairly the devs fault since they have to refer to there invester’s of ” how this will make money for me ” and as almost seemingly forced to play it safe from there money providers lol,

I think in the mmo’s every player should have an estate. A place that is not on the map anywhere, and that only you can go to. On the estate you can farm, put your captured slaves to work (yeah, you should be able to make slaves of captured enemies) and train your minions, solgiers and whatever else. As you gain wealth you can purchase more land and extend your estate. On the estate you can also recover from injuries or whatever. Maybe this is already out there, i dont know, I havent seen it.

i want to make a zombie game, there should be constant side missions such as aquiring supplies for medical uses, building uses and luxury. also there should be a different screen for battles, battles should be against zombie hordes and other players trying to sabotage you. other missions would be search and rescue and you should be able to explore block by block the raid buildings block by block.
what do yahs think???
