Free to Play WW2 MMOs
WW2 – The Never Ending War
Console gamers have grown accustomed to the never ending deluge of World War 2 games, but now free to play MMO fans are getting a taste of the Third Reich. A string of new free to play MMOs set during this time period are about to be released. These games are developed from all corners of the world, from North America to Russia to Korea so its not just one studio planning the conspiracy. No doubt the era holds plenty of gaming potential. A huge war that engulfed all of Europe (and the Pacific) and gave us history’s first major aerial and armored battles is the perfect setting for a variety of genres including FPS, and RTS. Below we’ll take a look at some of these upcoming games then discuss why some other major wars don’t get their fair share of video game love.
Developer: Relic Entertainment
Publisher: THQ
When most gamers think ‘real time strategy’ they imagine resource gathering and slowly building up a base. Relic Entertainment has shaken the genre with its Warhammer 40k Dawn of War and Company of Heroes series. Their fast paced take on the RTS genre focuses on units vying for control of strategic points that continuously replenish resources. Aggression is encouraged and turtling only leads to falling further behind. Company of Heroes has earned high marks and won a large following using this gameplay method and now free to play gamers will get to experience it! Company of Heroes Online has the same high production value and graphics of previous CoH titles, but will be free to play! The game is scheduled for release this fall, check out more on COHO on our preview page.
Developer: Wargaming.net
Publisher: Wargaming.net
Many shooters like War Rock allow players to drive tanks, but they usually play a periphery role. Not so in the upcoming World of Tanks. WoT puts armor in center stage by allowing players to relive the large-scale tank battles of the second World War. World of Tanks is a team based game that offers over 150 armored vehicles from the American, German, and Soviet arsenal. Historic accuracy and high quality, realistic graphics set the game apart from the competition. But historic accuracy won’t get in the way of gameplay. Players will be able to upgrade their tanks with new parts and weapons as they progress. Each type of tank will handle differently, and the massive 30v30 battles mean each team will need a balanced composition of light, medium, and heavily armored vehicles. The studio behind World of Tanks has released several other historic war games in the past, but this is their most ambitious project to date. As a huge fan of the tanks in Battlefield 1942, I can’t wait to give World of Tanks a test drive.
3. KARMA: Operation Barbarossa
Developer: Dragonfly GF
Publisher: NHN USA (ijji)
The War in Europe takes a strange twist in the Korean developed KARMA: Operation Barbarossa. The Germans never lost the war, and continue to ravage the continent. Players from both sides have to contend with the opposing nations, but also with the undead! That’s right, zombies roam war-torn Europe and don’t seem to discriminate between Axis or Ally. The game offers four classes or roles to play as, and players can switch between them between rounds. Karma: Operation Barbarossa is a team based first person shooter, so its important for each side to maintain a balance between the four available roles: Sniper, Assault, Heavy Weapons Specialist, and Support. Expect varied maps and game modes. The whole zombie aspect means we can expect modes like Quarantine from Combat Arms or Mutation from Cross Fire. Karma was scheduled for release back in 2009, but seems to be in deep freeze like IJJI’s other coming-soon MMOFPS, Huxley the Dystopia.
Developer: GameUs
Publisher: GamesCampus
In Heroes in the Sky, the fight takes flight! Dogfights, bomber squads, torpedo planes, its all here. Since Aeronauts closed down, the sci-fi Ace Online has been the only free to play aerial shooter. Heroes in the Sky will change all that. The familiar WW2 theme means plenty of planes of British, American, Germany, and Soviet design will find their way into the game. Heroes in the Sky boasts realistic graphics, and allows players to fight on massive maps. Some battles take place over land while others are set over the ocean where player will have to contend with war ships. While several past war games do allow players to fly planes, Heroes in the Sky is entirely focused on aerial combat. The game entered closed beta testing on June 10, 2010. MMOHut has been giving away beta keys so grab one and earn your wings soldier!
5. Tank Ace
Developer: OnNet USA
Publisher: GamesCampus
GamesCampus is a free to play portal best known for their sports MMOs like Shot Online and MLB Dugout Heroes, but they have recently made a big push into war games. Tank Ace is a 3D WW2 tank shooter that strives for realism. In many ways, it is similar to World of Tanks so tank fans will surely be in for a treat this summer. Players will be able to customize their vehicles with individual parts such as turrets, tracks, and armor for each individual part of their tanks! Features include over 10 different hit boxes on each vehicle, and support for various camera angles including driver, commander, and scout. Individual skill plays a large role in Tank Ace, but the massive battles also require teamwork. While still in development, Tank Ace has already gone through a first round of closed beta testing and a second should be on the way soon.
Those are some of the upcoming free to play World War 2 themed MMOs, but let’s not forget the ones that are already available. Battlefield Heroes fits the description despite the animated graphics and humorous atmosphere. Also included are Navy Field and Blitz 1941, two 2D MMOs. Surprisingly few FPS games made the list. Am I forgetting something or have modern tactical shooters dominated the F2P scene? When will we get a free to play WW2 Call of Duty game?
And now to the question on everyone’s mind, why WW2? Why do we see so many games based on this war? What’s wrong with World War One? The Germans were still the bad guys and the Americans, Brits, and Russians were the good guys. Trench warfare would be pretty cool, but I suppose ‘camping’ would be an even bigger problem than it is now. So what about the American Revolutionary or Civil War? What do you guys think, what war would make a good MMOFPS, MMORPG, or MMORTS? Or should developers stay away from ‘real’ wars and stick with pretend near-future conflicts like the one between Russia and the EU in Alliance of Valiant Arms?

Well, my thoughts may be that WW2 has become a celebrity because isn’t that about the time that a lot of new technology was being invented? But then again, I also think that every developer wants to be known for making the best War game.
So why base games of WW2? Well, that war was like a war like no other. (tongue twister). Its a war that symbolized courage and hope, as well as victory and defeat from both sides. Every player wants to be the best in a game, so why not pick an era of war that symbolized that feeling of triumphant pwnage? Devs love to pit players against each other to see how the field is played through the eyes of everyone. Also, its a war that could have gone either way, and many developers want to exploit that idea and see who comes out with the best layout based on WW2 and other epic wars.

Not to mention that putting a shooter before the World War II era would turn off a lot of gamers due to generally slower-paced gameplay and a more limited selection of weapons. WWI wouldn’t work because a lot of WWI battles were fought in ditches and therefore not as exciting.
On another note… NavyField is really addictive x_x

I believe most of WW1 was waiting in a trench for the gas alarm to go so you could piss on your sock and use it as a mask.
I might be wrong.
But we aren’t looking for reality are we? just general fun gameplay, so twisting the war a touch probably won’t be a big deal, and the weapons would be interesting to try out just to see how much they progressed from WWI to WWII.
Star hawk is probably right though, WWII had huge technological jumps and the germans used Blitzkrieg (fast paced warfare for those who don’t know) and until we have the next major war I doubt we will do much other then middle east and WWII. and the odd crazy pretend wars that always, ALWAYS blame russia.

For me WWII is the most fascinating era for MMOFPSes. The thing is that none of the ones that are out now are any decent.

dude Vietnam interests me a lot more than WWII for a fps first cause it was a brutal war so it is fast paced and saddened me a lot of men died (on average 50 americans died each day since 61 or 62 forgot to 75) 2nd almost NO ONE did a vietnam game except Dice and 2 others I saw and 3rd wouldn’t flying in a huey in the gunner seat blasting to CCR-Fortunate Son or Jimi Hendrix-All along the Watchtower be freaking awesome!

I agree, after a so long they need to stop making WWII games and pick a different war… Yeah, it was epic. Yeah, It was horrible. But that war has already been captured. Fantasy is nice, even if its based on a real war. Take Wolfinstein for example. WWII- With a resident evil twist. And Turok! Future war against dinosaur people! Let me see what you can come up with… But I love games that scare the crap out of me as I’m shooting at people. Maybe Vietnam with werewolves? that would be orignal.

What about WWII Online: Battleground Europe. This is considered to be the first WWII MMOFPS. You can fight as planes, tanks, infantry, and even boats.

hmm after reading all that, supremacy 1914 is a rts WW1 strategy that is very well done best in that style of games.
nam games? yes there have been a few in the past, just obviously not companies you have heard of, korean war there has never been a game that directly relates to this war but many that use small battles from this war. None of the games that have any relation to any of the larger wars for american history besides the civil war, have been online displaying in a multiplayer lvl. Not sure who bought the Conflict series but know Pivotal was the company that started it, first game was release for ps2 and was called Conflict : Desert Storm, is like Socom but with full control over your 4 man team, complete control over inventory making it ideal for running through the lvl with a one man killing force unlike socom at the time. Was a small title and was fallowed up with Conflict II : Back to Baghdad, then Conflict:Vitenam this one had the iconic chopper scene except not jimmy no this one is Paint it Black, even still send shivers up my spin was a good background for it, if you have read the infamous novel Recondo and liked it i highly suggest this game it fallows the book very closely and you will notice that all the characters for the series are modeled after this book, opens on the tet offensive, and finally Conflict:Global Terror. All were very good games. that is the best ones i know of for Nam or Vietnam but..
There was also a Vietnam game, that one was so bad is was forgotten as soon as it was released.
As for ancient, Why in f^%$ would you want to run around in a fps and shot arrows? swing a sword or anything todo with that style of warfare? and if that is what your into stick to bethesda studios, though ill never touch that crap and will stick with fallout. Rts in ancient this style has been done been done and oh ya still being done.. lame when it started, surprised it still exists today, though i like some AOE is over played like C&C.
There is a reference and a few lvls that u run through in black ops but its not a core focus of a game, nor is it iconic nam style besides the american politics, and to that i perfer the vid given for the zombie killing mission, laugh everytime i see him shake his hand and the eccentric Nixon love that..
No there isnt any fpsmmo, depending one what your definition of that is.. if takin literal then yes there are a few fpsmmo WW2 games, first would be RTCW or mostly know as wolfinstien though wolf 3d is wolf and rtcw is ID softwares remake. As for character development again RTCW:ET first to develop this in a massive multiplayer online or mmo. If you know alot about the game industry you will know that mmo is majorly defined by how many ppl connect to one server to join into one world, the only thing that got rtcw a mmo tag to it was simple it did, 64 player maps that still run today, Long Live Happy Penguin lol. Now with that said..
A fps mmo rpg? no that dose not exist yet, as that would be a good idea and a fresh idea, So far the closest to this would be Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, but that had nothing to do with the company had to do with the demand of the players and moders, but never really got off the ground as the game is riddled with bugs that the mod community had to fix. that would be one style, second would be cross between fantasy earth zero and WarRock.. its on the way and companies have been work hard to get there and few have developed stuff that is on this lvl but not many gear’d to a modern warfare style or a modern world style. Gta would be a good idea for a rpg style but again nothing has been made… Hint Hint any game dev’s..

A Korean war mmo would be neat, since its one of those slightly neglected wars (anglo-afghan wars, Balkan wars, etc.) and because my grandfather fought in Korea and has some good stories about it.
