Console MMORPGs Will Never Make Sense

MMORPGs will never thrive on consoles. The numbers just don’t make sense. There are only 65 million Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles combined in the world as of December 26, 2009. That’s the entire market. 65 Million. It may seem like a lot but MMORPGs like RuneScape and Scions of Fate each have over 100 million users worldwide. That’s more than all of the PS3s and Xbox 360s in the world! Practically everyone has a PC these days, but not everyone has a console. One could argue that not all PC users are ‘gamers’, which is very true, but then again not all MMORPG gamers are big console gamers either. Comparatively speaking, the size of the console market is pretty small. Another thing to keep in mind is that unlike PCs, consoles have very finite life cycles, so developers would need to ‘re release’ their games on new consoles and the transition between consoles could certainly cause problems. Since PCs have already proven to be a viable market for MMORPGs there’s little reason to try develop a console MMORPG.

Another reason why a console MMORPG won’t succeed is that playing an MMORPG on a console just isn’t practical. One of the biggest parts of an MMORPG is communication and typing on a  joypad is just downright ridiculous. Voice chat could work, but I’d imagine not everyone wants to use it with the strangers they meet online. People tend to like the anonymity of the internet and voice chat does take a bit of that away. Secondly, unless the console MMO is free to play the subscription fee would be a huge turn off as everyone on the Xbox 360 already pays a fee for Xbox live. Lastly, most MMORPGs today are designed to be played via ‘point and click’ and have many many hot keys. Just trying to imagine playing an in-depth game like World of Warcraft or Eve Online on a controller makes me shiver a bit inside. The only way to ever overcome the control issues would be for developers to really dumb down the interface or release some sort of mouse + keyword for consoles.

The concept of a console MMORPG is not new. Numerous game developers have tried releasing MMOs for consoles and haven’t succeeded. Games like EverQuest Online Adventures, Phantasy Star Online, Phantasy Star Universe and Final Fantasy 11 are all MMORPGs currently available on consoles. Out of all of these games the only really ‘successful’ one is Final Fantasy 11 and that can be largely attributed to its fan base. Plus, the CEO of Square Enix, the company behind Final Fnatasy 11 even stated, “In ten years’ time a lot of what we call ‘console games’ won’t exist.” Heck if the guys behind the most popular console MMORPG on the market isn’t optimistic, it’s certainly not a good sign. Another thing worth mentioning is that both Final Fantasy 11 and Phantasy Star Universe can be played on the PC, which is likely the most popular platform for these games anyway.

Although I personally don’t believe MMORPGs will ever thrive on consoles, I still believe that we’ll see at least a few moderately successful MMORPGs on consoles though nothing nearly as huge as say World of Warcraft. I have to admit though that consoles have evolved significantly this generation. Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have solid internet and storage capabilities so console MMORPGs aren’t nearly as difficult to develop today as they were last generation (PS2/GC/Xbox). I’d love to see a free to play title like Runes of Magic or even Atlantica Online be ported over to a console, as that could really work. Console gamers would certainly give these games a try as they would be free to play, micro transaction supported. I haven’t heard any plans for a free to play console MMORPG though, but CCP (Eve Online) and Funcom (Age of Conan) have already publicly stated that they would develop console MMOs in the future – so who knows. Maybe the console MMO market could go places.

Well if consoles live enough -which i believe they will- companies might develop a game that actually makes sense xD

Plus i think EQOA was and is 1 of the most successfull console MMORPGs. But only time will tell about this.

100million…..yeah…. in about a 10 year span and i bet over 50% of those people left years ago , and a HUGE chunk of runescape’s player base is people with multiple accounts , since you can literally have as many characters/accounts as you want , it doesn’t have 100 million active players , if you actually look on their site they have about 1million active players per day , world of warcraft , has 12 million active subscribers , bringing a game like that to a console is going to open up the ability to even play the game to millions and millions of new people . Xbox 360 and PS3 are can also easily be compatible with a keyboard and mouse since they have USB and you CAN use the keyboard for chatting and there is a xbox 360 keyboard and mouse for gaming you can buy for about 100$. Also looking at runescapes website right now , 123,000 online people , theres more people in team slayer on halo reach right now. 100 million is so ridiculously far off the real number it made me laugh. Then next thing people say is there isn’t enough buttons on the controller , I have seen someone play wow with a 360 controller with 44 maccros / keybinded actions , that is plenty imo. The main thing holding the playerbase down for pc mmorpgs is people having shitty computers and a nice enough computer is hundreds of dollars more then an xbox 360 bundle. Saying that communication would be a problem…..lol…seriously ….. almost every single person on xbox live has a microphone since every 360 console now comes with one and there is also the messenger and the ability to plug in your keyboard. “Practically everyone has a PC these days, but not everyone has a console.” most people’s computers can not handle mmorpgs. Also they could integrate the on screen keyboard like in PSU online which is a shitty game imo but has a great mmorpg chat system , works just like sending messages to your friends and is toggled on and off instantly . The only thing in this whole article is the consoles life span , which…..is increasing amazingly , consoles used to be outdated after just a couple years but the 360 was released November 22, 2005 , Microsoft and Sony both say that these consoles will still be around for at least a few more years , and at the rate its been going maybe even longer , so transition between consoles has hit rock bottom in console history and will continue to decline , there is really not legitimate reason as to why there is no real mmorpg for the current consoles.

i think mmorpgs in console would not be that be they just need a bit more of work for example i think 2d side scroll mmorpgs would really work on a console base and the reason why so many people would like to have a console mmorpg is that becuase of the pc always need new updates and features on the pc every years. Like u maybe for example need to update your pc device to run a game u played before and a lot of people gets problem updating theese pc becuase of the little knowledge they have of the game and pcs. what good with the console version you just pop in the cd and play no big problem no requirments no downloads no changing parts of your console. but i do think playing wow or any other than side scrolling 2d mmorpgs would be hard to play on a ebox or ps3 controller.

Just figured I’d add in there i’d like to see a console MMORPG for the ability to be able to sit somewhere and see it on my screen and sometimes my wife and friends like to watch. with a console you wouldn’t have to buy a bunch of cords. also computers are always outdating and alot of time it costs more to update a pc then buy a new one point is most peole cant afford one. Also its easy to use mmorpgs on controler i do it all the time so my 3 year old son can play the following games you can use a 360 controler on : Vindictus, FF Xi , WoW , Dynasty Warriors Online , MapleStory, Dungeon Fighter, Drift City Stage 2, Rumble Fighter, Dragonica, Street Gears. And with programs like Pinnacle Game Profiler many more mmorpg’s are going to be able to be played with controller. While it is easier to move around with a controller. It is easier to overall control everything with keyboard and mouse which even with a controler you most of time still need k & M ne way.

I played Everquest Online Adventures and its Expansion pack Frontiers for 5 years on the Playstation 2. The game was completely compatable with the Playstation 3 when it came out and even looked nicer on the new consol. Anyways, consol MMORPGs would have a big enough following to make them useful and worth it. While the majority of MMORPGs on the net now are Free to Pay with item malls, charging a monthly fee of less then 15 dollars per month wouldn’t be asking too much and would pull in hundreds of thousands of gamers on both the xbox360 and ps3 systems. That’s more then enough money to cover all the costs with making the game and turning a constant profit while keeping a full staff to update it regularly. Would be great to have another MMORPG as the PC ones just aren’t convient for me and probably a lot of others. I would greatly rather have a controller in my hand then a mouse and keyboard. Also side note, both the Xbox360 and the PS3 have keyboards that can be connected to the controllers so the original article has no damn clue about consol extras.

How will anyone know without attempting it? If a game with the graphics of dragon age or so and action elements like tera will have, it wouldn’t even sell a million copies? And an item mall wouldn’t be enough to make enough money for such a title? I think gamers don’t know what they’re missing.

    ATTENTION: you are all wrong.

MMORPG market is not similar to market of regular games such as FPS that is limited by number of consoles. Hardcore MMORPG junkies will buy $2000 PS5(next generation of play stations that was not yet invented) if we think that World of Warcraft runs better on it. IMHO if console manufacturers were smart that would sponsor MMO developers to produce console games. Most of us MMORPG players have decent income or higher. Many of us like me and buy whatever the hell they want because they earn more money than they need. Jelous yet?

I played ff xi on ps2. I build my own PCs and play games on it. Mmo can be done on console but at a price. Console will never be as powerful or look as good. Keyboard and mouse? Not that helpful. If a console come out brand new right now it wont be as powerful or capable as a 2011 pc unless it cost $1000. And in 6 months when someone spends$250 to upgrade video the console that did not even have the video ability of that pc got left about 3 years behind. Thats just why pc is easier and it has game, bussiness and personal uses where console will not. Makes sense to own a pc.

I just have to say this. I have had a ps3 controller hooked up to my PC for use with World of Warcraft, and I was able to do raids with it. It actually upped my DPS, and my motivation.
MMOs for a console is a brilliant idea. SO many people enjoy the ease of a console. Its a premade system built to the exact specifications for videogame use.
Dont have to worry about the next best PC upgrades.
Whats wrong with typing on a joypad? XBOX360 and PS3 have keyboard accessories for the paddles, AND USB ports for use with an actual keyboard.
So typing and communication is not an issue.
I would love for a new fantasy MMO to come out with a Rift / WoW feel to it, that I can play on a console. I think it would thrive. And they could easily link it to PC as well.
Think about it, majority of us know what COD is all about. Its not an RPG, but its still an MMO, its massively multiplayer!
LETS GET AN MMORPG for the consoles people! Cmon world!

    Hi

Reading this article i agree on many points, I have often wondered why big MMO games did not relase them on a console platform, after reading the Numbers playing combined it would agree, the market size really is not big enough, However as u said the amount of people who play runescape, I beilive down to the fact that You do NOT need a top spec pc (Costing in excess of £600, sometimes more) to play the likes of runescape, Any basic computer can, Now Console however are there for gaming, and most of them i would suggest play a fair few hours on them, I recently downloaded Dc universe, Which sadly i could not run on my pc, now thats came is brillant, no subscription needed, however i read a article, claiming there subscripions or Profits, not sure which one rose by over 700% because of Releasing it to Playsation, Now i would love to play many MMo, mainly swtor or lotr, However u need very good gaming pc’s, which in my eyes, Does not warrant a £600 + pc and subscription fees, and every over costs, Surly releasing it on a console platform would only increase the Console market and mmo Users, due to the fact Console costs nothing…. in comparsion, anyway my view

    Many thanks

p.s Wish i could play SWTOR look amazing, However still think the Orignal was the best, but maybe that because i have not played the online version :)

I think most mature age gamers are moving onto consoles, I know my gaming group has we are all in our thirties and dont want the hassle of computer gaming and the fact we spend all day in front of computers…trust me last thing i want to do is go home and jump on another computer.

If its there ppl will play it, and i think the first company to pull it off will conquer the console mmo market as well as reading an article that females prefer gaming on console and with more females starting to game I see it as the future.

I’ve been using a USB keyboard with consoles, since ps2, actually I’m sure I can remember having a keyboard on the dreamcast, It is very simple for a dev to program the commands for a mouse. Can’t see why blizzard can’t program a console client for wow and merge them into the current pc servers either.

Look, for the most part, the reason why MMORPGs are so widespread is because they’re relatively cheap (you need a computer for necessities, therefore you probably already have one) and they don’t need much to run. There are loads of free to plays which run on exclusive items which are not necessary, but they just are awesome, therefore they cost real money. The problem of Consoles is that you swap them every 4 years and it’s too much of a bother to hog the TV screen, switch on your console and then log in when you already have your computer on due to convenience or you just finished your school work.

The topic of for-console MMOs aside,I really wish some MMOs would be ported to consoles. Particularly EVE-Online. But others would make sense too. And there’s really no reason to do it, at least I don’t think on the surface (things like royalties or licensing issues or whatever).

Hate to sound like a conservative talk show host here, but my objections to the author’s point would be as follows:

The market is too small – Really? I mean world of warcraft has like 10 mil. Ragnarok has maybe double that despite it’s cheaper freemium model and lower graphic requirements. Then you get to the free and even lower graphic requirment games the author mentions, except 100 million users is bullshit. maybe registered users or downloads, but definitely not active players, which the 10 million figure for WoW subscriptions would be a better indicator of. So that means that in fact the market’s only actually several tens of millions large, so it actually fits the console scope quite nicely.

next, the whole controller issue. why were mouses and keyboards on the PS2 for ffii just glossed over? most consoles come with USB ports nowadays anyway.

and finally, people already essentially pay for MMORPGs on consoles, minus the massively part. I am of course referring to Call of Duty. You pay 10 bucks a month (if xbox live), then you pay an additional 15 bucks twice a year for “DLC.” You level your “character” up, gain new items and abilities n shit, and team up and kill other random people (so like a strictly pvp mmo).

I don’t see why it can’t be done.
