Aika Closed Beta Review

By Jamie Skelton

Aika, a new game from Gala-Net, just began its closed beta on February 3rd in North America. A lovely looking MMORPG, Aika combines some classic MMO elements with newer ideas like the personal pet (Pran) and in-game assistance for achieving objectives.

The Dark Arts are for Men Only

Aika offers six classes to choose from: two melee (Warrior and Paladin), two ranged (Rifleman and Dual Gunner), and two casters (Warlock and Cleric.) Each of these classes is male only and female only respectively (gender-locked), which is a small disappointment for many. Each class also offers something unique to both PvE and PvP elements, enough so that any DPS class is not going to feel unwanted for groups or PvP. While the character customization is not going to blow you away with options, there are enough options for hair, hair color, and face to feel at least a little bit apart from the rest of your newbie brethren.

Involved in the Story

Aika has a great deal of classic MMORPG components, including storyline questing. Quests in Aika have been made interesting in that they are achieved through a series of scripted dialogues between the player character and the NPC, rather than being a block of text with objectives and a reward listed at the end. The mystery of story-telling doesn’t get in the way of clear quest objectives, including an on-screen tracker and decent hints in your quest log. As a bonus, Aika is well-translated and localized.

No Lines

Although Aika is just in closed beta, there are plenty of people playing, so I was surprised to find that quest objectives that involved killing enemies (especially named ones) were particularly easy to complete. The spawn timer is fast enough to prevent waiting in line or AFKing at a spot while you wait for a named mob to reappear. On the flip side, this same spawn timer is going to keep players on their toes when killing in the wild – especially on aggressive creatures.

Meet Your Fairy Daughter

Aika doesn’t wait to get the ball rolling, either. You only gain a few levels before you’re sent off to meet your Pran – essentially a pet in a system slightly similar to that of Perfect World International. Prans are like fairy children, and the first part of getting your Pran is to find three “rare” drops off three enemies found outside the city within an hour; but although these are rare drops, they are relatively easy to get, as I got each of mine in less than ten kills of each creature. Next is choosing the type of Pran you want; Fire (offensive), Water (recovery), or Air (defensive), and collecting the right amount of essences (a rare drop from the creatures nearby) as a sort of tribute to your Fairy and the Pran system. The essences may take a while to get, unless you choose to trade or buy them from other players, who are usually pretty willing to make that arrangement. Finally, you’ll get your Pran, who starts off as a little buzzing fairy that annoys your Captain, but will eventually evolve into a young girl, whose appearance will change based on the choices you make in feeding and talking with her.

Early Grouping

Not only do you not have to wait very long for your special pet, you don’t have to wait very long for grouping, either. Before you even hit level ten, you’ll be assigned to check out a new area via teleporter. This fortress is designed for groups, and comes both with a normal mode and a hard mode. This actually comes as a pleasant surprise for those like myself who enjoy grouping in MMOs, but often find it lacking until end-game. Even an in-game LFG tool that combines chat with a group search features is available. The missions at the instance, however, never feel forced upon a player who prefers to go solo, and are capable of being soloed at higher levels.

Gearing Up On Your Own

Crafting is also available for players who enjoy that system, allowing them to create their own armor and weapons at a significant discount compared to directly purchasing them from vendors. Materials are a very common drop from any enemy, and the crafting UI (available at a forge in town) is simple enough to understand with just a few clicks. Gear can also be enhanced through an enchanter, have its requirements leveled down by a smith, or have its properties transferred to another piece of equipment; all convienent ways of managing and enhancing your gear without stress.

An Orchestrated Story

One element of Aika that struck me early and continued to stick with me as I played was the music. From the moment you set foot in Aika as a young Aitan, the strong tones of the soundtrack surround you. This isn’t a weak soundtrack, either.  No boring repeats of some generic music; this is a soundtrack fitting of a full-blown RPG. Special events and quests will also suddenly throw in a new musical piece, to switch, for instance, from the idyllic tunes of the countryside to something more militaristic as you meet your regiment’s captain. At the same time, the system knows that music can be overbearing and will silence itself after a while of staying in the same area.

Early Verdict: Good

At an early glance, Aika’s not a unique MMO; it borrows, like most MMOs do, from other systems. Its combination of systems, however, syncs well enough to give a nice mix of things that players enjoy about MMOs. Aika has a certain charm to it that already has many of us going back for seconds and thirds. While it may not be the most unique MMO out there, Aika certainly stands out from the crowd.

Although three classes are disappointing, I’ve seen MMOs with only two classes. And the classes aren’t technically “gender locked,” as a male Warrior and a female Paladin are both technically in the melee class, as a male Rifleman and female Dual Gunner are both within the ranged class.

The lag is probably due to Aika being in closed beta, which is expected to have lag with the huge surge of people playing at once to get their fill of an MMO before it’s even released.

I also don’t see how the characters look like paper. The graphics were very well done in my opinion, up to par, or possibly even better, than MMOs today.

I think that bad lag came from your computer. I play this game without delay lags besides a minor fps lag. This game is pretty good for a free to play. Go back to WoW.

It sucks because? It is not that I’m against what you said, but I just wanna hear the bad side of Aika. Or say the things that you don’t like with the game that does make it suck.

My guess would be that the only thing that draws people to play Aika is their promise of 1000 vs 1000 fights, and it it possible looking at graphic engine, let’s just watch how it will go.

So far, I like what I hear from the review. I’ve been eyeing this game since last summer, but I too would like to know about the gameplay issues. There isn’t a single MMO out there that doesn’t have “downs” (like grind or abusive cash shops).

Aika has gender locks and limited visual customization to keep graphic requirements and lag down for the mass pvp battles. The 6 classes are very different and very well balanced for a pvp/pve game. All offer benifits to a group for both aspects of the game.
Last day of Closed beta 1 had full large scale nation wars in effect. I was in temple defense. We had 2 raid groups defending and 2 nations in alliance attacking us. they had 3 raid groups. All fighting over 1 objective. NO LAG. At same time we had counter attack force raiding other nations. Each of the 5 nations had attackers and defenders raiding at same time. There was no server crashes at all.
For those with lag. make sure you deleted pandometer the downloader. that stays open for peer to peer unless you shut it down. Its not needed after the 1st download. normal patcher works after. X-trap. open game in admin mode on vista. Check aika forums out for details on classes.

To people who thinks this lags: You either aren’t from America or your PC and internet connection sucks. I have a 4 year old comp and I max all the settings in this game. I get no fps or connection lag and guess what, I got to level 30 in cb1.

I started out the game and quickly felt the game was lacking, until I realized I was playing one of the zan dungeons past 1 am. As my character evolved more, I started to enjoy more aspects of the game. Overall I like this game especially the 1000vs 1000 PvP.

it is a good game but it lack in its statement when it said 1000 vs 1000 ahhh i was hoping for a realy big pvp game but its not there the pvp is very good but the size is not there.

For a free to play game, Aika is the best I have experienced. DDO simply was not for me, being way too much D&D ( which i should have expected) and not enough MMO. Aika is, as the 13th comment said., not 1000 v 1000 but on my server i get an average of 250 v 250 pvp battles and experience no bit of lag. Granted I am running an alienware, but my guildies only experience minor lag as well. WoW is a great game, but not worth the money when there are free to plays at least 80 percent as good ( in my opinion equal AT LEAST) . Aika has a breathtaking orchestraic soundtrack and great graphics. They DO NOT look like paper but if you’re playing an MMO which can make these look like paper, please tell me about it. I can simply not state enough about the glorious PvP. You really should download Aika and give it a a shot. If you have such a heated opinion against it, simply click uninstall.
