EpicDuel Overview

EpicDuel is Artix Entertainment’s most PvP oriented RPG to date. The game is set in the distant future on a world known as Delta V. The art style and turn based combat are in the same fashion as previous BattleOn games, but this time PvP takes center stake. Players will be able to jump into 1v1 or 2v2 duels using the game’s auto arrange system from any map. There are some NPCs scattered around the world which players can challenge, but this servers as a minor distraction. Achievements, player run factions (guilds), and player housing add some replay value, but this is definitely one of those games best enjoyed in short busts.

Mercenary – Powerful, but slow fighters capable of dealing heavy damage. Mercenaries use clubs and other mainly blunt melee weapons. They are comparable to classic RPG Warriors.

Bounty Hunter - Striking a balance between skills and physical attacks, Bounty Hunters make use of mounted wrist blades and other piercing weapons. They are the Rogues of EpicDuel.

Tech Mage - Equipped with magical staffs, Tech Mages are the wizards of EpicDuel. They possess energy based skills.

EpicDuel Review 2014

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor)

When playing a MMORPG I always like to challenge myself with other players. By playing a duel or fighting them in a mode with established matchmaking systems, I can find that adrenaline pumping challenge that keeps me hooked and duking it out for hours a day. This week I was introduced to one that’s flown under my radar for quite some time, a game that is entirely focused on fighting with other players, and it is also fully playable in the browser. Epic Duel is a free to play MMORPG that utilizes PvP as your character’s method of progression, leaving the monster fights to those ‘other guys.’

If you have played a game from Artix Entertainment before, you should feel right at home with the graphical style and gameplay of Epic Duel. Artix Entertainment, also known as Battleon Games, have made a lot of browser games before, and I have always been a fan of their signature style. I myself have played Adventure Quest Worlds for a long time, and the simple yet addicting style has made me come back to it again and again. It’s fair to think of AQW as the PvE story driven title where Epic Duel offers the PvP counterpart.

Now that’s not to say there isn’t a story in Epic Duel as well. It’s just that it’s the usual tacked on tale common among MMORPGs that focus more on the MMO than the RPG part of their name. There are two factions who both have a different view on life, and you get to choose to play for one of them. They are not really too interesting so I will not go further in depth on that, but surprisingly you always have the choice to switch between them if you do not feel satisfied with your current group.

Right off the bat I am reminded why this special style that Artix Entertainment uses interests me for all their games. Your character, and everything you can equip not only reflects on your looks, but just looks bad ass once your character is fully equipped. This dedication to style also stands as one of their secrets to their monetization success as players can purchase even shinier equipment in the cash shop, offering only cosmetic differences, but making you feel all warm and fuzzy inside when your epic flaming sword slams down on an intimidated opponent. Prices are reasonable and most people that play Epic Duel for a great length of time will usually give in to the urge to snag at least one of the sweet items available.

During the character creation you can only choose between three classes. The Mercenary that you can compare to a Warrior, the Bounty Hunter that is the assassin type, and the Tech Mage that uses both magic and specialized weapons. I liked the thought of the Mercenary, so my choice was simply. Before long I was lugging around a giant two-handed weapon like it was nothing.

Right away you are shown why this game is a bit more difficult than Artix’s other games. Over the last few years we have all been spoiled with auto tracking quests and any other luxury features. And I was reminded why having these features is really a blessing to have; I already had trouble with the first quest finding the right guy to initiate it. As a new player in Epic Duel it can be dauntingly difficult to get adjusted. Some of the quest givers ask you to get an item, or to speak with someone but do not give any directions or information of the location. So you really have to search around all the places to find what you need, and this is easier said than done since there are so many locations that you can teleport to.

When you go to your world map you can see the amount of areas in Epic Duel. There are currently ten areas that you can go to, and each area has several or more locations where people can fight with each other or do objectives and quests. Each location in these areas can be controlled by one of the two factions. The system is simple enough and involves taking control of the majority of locations in an area before officially seizing the entire region for your faction. To help conquer a location you need to complete objectives, win fights against the opposing faction, and take part in various other interactions. For all of this you will earn influence, and influence will help you capture the location that you are in.

Now onto the most important feature of Epic Duel! Fighting with other players. There are a lot of different ways to fight it out with other players in Epic Duel. You can simply challenge people that are around you, or you can use the matchmaking feature in Epic Duel. Currently there are two game modes, you can play a 1v1 and 2v2. These game modes will automatically search players from your own level range so you do not have to search for people on the battlefield. Once you have found an opponent, the fight starts. Each players has 13 seconds on each turn to make his move, and you really do not need that long if you are paying attention. And the latter is really important, because I have unfortunately lost fights for missing the turns. When it is your turn to attack, you can choose between a few possibilities. Each player has his own set of skills, and when you level up you get to choose what kind of skills you want. These skills use mana, and since you do not have unlimited supply you really need to use your skills at the right time. As a Mercenary I had skills that would support me in regenerating health and getting stat bonuses, but I also had offensive skills that made me pull out a big bazooka, or strike them in an awesome way with my two handed weapon.

Conclusion: Great

Epic Duel is an awesome name for this game because it describes every fight so extremely well. All the duels I had with other players were quite equal, resulting in a narrow win or loss. Coming up with a viable strategy and knowing when to react and change it is vital to win regularly, and knowing the capabilities of each class will set you a tier above the competition. Together with character customization represented in sweet 2D style, it still stands above most browser games being released today. At the heart it’s a grand example of Artix Entertainment’s passion for high quality browser gaming while offering something different from their other titles. If you are a big fan of duking it out with other players, and love collecting and testing out a wide assortment of shiny gear, but don’t have the time you used to for epic PvP MMOs, Epic Duel just might be the game to scratch that itch.

EpicDuel is the sixth addition to Artix Entertainment’s browser based RPG lineup. While it looks and plays like any other Artix game, it was originally designed by a separate company called Epic Inventions that was later bought out by Artix Entertainment. Like AdventureQuest, DragonFable, and MechQuest, EpicDuel has a simple turn based combat system. But unlike previous titles, EpicDuel is predominantly a player vs player (PvP) oriented game.

Sign-Up Once

Artix has recently upgraded their sign up process. Players must now create a single ‘Master Account’ then individually ‘activate’ games before logging on. The process is painless, and it doesn’t even require email verification! Gaining access to the whole range of games offered by the company with a single login is a great boon, but a valid email is required for password recovery. Once logged in, players have several servers to choose from. In reality these servers act more as channels. Players can switch between them and their character will carry over. The disadvantage to this system is that players can only create one character per account.
Flashed Out Costumes

Luckily, that single character can be customized to great detail. There are three classes to chose from in EpicDuel and they are the warrior-like Mercenary, the wizard-like Tech Mage, and the rogue-like Bounty Hunter. Each has a slightly different body build for both their male and female versions. Players can customize their character’s hair, eye, skin, and costume colors using a huge palette. There different components make up a character’s costume, primary, secondary, and accent. What this means in practice is that some very original costume designs are possible. I went with a dark green and black costume for my mercenary. In addition to this there are several hair styles available for each class and gender combination.

Pick Up & Play

New players can be forgiven if they suffer initial confusion when starting EpicDuel. There’s no tutorial or explanation beyond a small prompt that describes several of the buttons on the bottom taskbar. The reason for this lack of explanation is that EpicDuel is incredibly simple. Players are not getting themselves into a full fledged MMORPG like AdventureQuest Worlds, nor are they getting themselves into a single player RPG like AdventureQuest. Instead, the entire EpicDuel world can be thought of as a giant lobby for players to wander through in between PvP duels. Sure there are NPCs scattered around to challenge, but it is player vs player battles that yield the most experience, and credits. Controls are entirely mouse driven. Player left click to move, and left click the select skills while in combat. Right clicking will bring up some Flash menu option thing, so the only time player will be right clicking is by accident. The graphic quality of the game is on par with Artix’s more recent games. The visuals don’t push the envelop of Flash development, but the bright  colors and distinct style show through. Whether or not you’ll enjoy looking at them comes to personal preference.

Punch, Kick, Cast

Players can challenge one another to duels while traversing the overworld, but by far the most effective way of finding a fight is clicking on the 1v1 or 2v2 match-making buttons on the bottom tool bar. This will automatically place players in a fight with opponents near their level range. The first few matches are sure to be frustrating, the combat is generally slow paced and new players will end up facing off against higher level opponents. For these reasons, its best to start off with 2v2 matches. Newbies are usually placed with higher level players to balance out the teams. All classes start with three skills and will eventually have access to a total of 11. The single, universally shared skill is a healing move called Field Medic. Besides these skills, players have a physical attack ability that doesn’t take any energy. Beginners will usually only be able to use two skills per battle, but as they level up they will be able to increase their max energy. Experience and credits are gained even if a player loses, but far more are rewarded after a victory.

Working Your Way to the Top

Each level, players gain four stat points and a single skill point. There are six attributes to distribute points among: health, energy, strength, dexterity, technology, and support. Each class has several viable builds to consider, but luckily players can hover their cursor over a stat to see exactly what it does. The skill tree is straight forward, there are 11 skills, some of which must be unlocked by learning the ones above them. Players can unlock new skills with their first few skill points or use them to increase the rank of existing ones. There is an achievement system that may give some players an extra incentive to keep playing. Winning battles earns players battle tokens which are used to purchase badges. Others players can see the total badges you’ve collected when they view your profile. A world-wide leaderboard can also be viewed from anywhere. the leaderboard shows the total number of wins, and the win percentage of the top player. Getting to the top is no easy task, and will likely require spending a lot of real cash to acquire the game’s premium currency: Varium.

Super Secret Metal

The backstory in EpicDuel surroundings a devious businessman named Balius who has discovered a new metal called Varium. This highly valuable resource eventually lead to a destructive war pitting Balius’s Legion faction against the Exiles lead by Oz. All player run factions must align themselves with one side or the other. The collective rankings of players on these two sides serves as a sort of meta-game to determine which side is currently ‘winning the war.’ Unfortunately, the creation of a player run faction requires varium. Many powerful pieces of equipment, including weapons and armor also require this metal. Varium can be purchased in three amounts; 2500 for $20, 5000 for $35, and 10,000 for $50. There are plenty of competitive weapons that only cost credits during the early stages, but as players approach the current level cap of 31 they’ll run across more premium content wielding opponents. Those who make it to that stage may very well decide the game is worth the expense, but for the rest of us EpicDuel is still a pretty interesting casual game.

Final Verdict: Good

EpicDuel doesn’t offer a whole lot of features, and it won’t enthrall you for hours on end. But it does provide a simple, fun PvP experience that compliments the other games offered by Artix Entertainment. It’s kid friendly, and a decent way to kill time on a browser tab while working on something else.
